A/N Mucho huge heaping thanks to Goddess Foxfeather for being ubermurr. ;) And thank you to everyone for reading and reviewing and keeping up with my spazzy updates. The drama is wrapping up story-wise and there's sweaty, sticky smut coming. Um. You know what I mean *ahem* .
Rose inhaled sharply, jerked off her feet by strong hands, lifted high and spun around; she had only run a few yards before being intercepted by the Rani. "Spry for an old bat," Rose snarled as she was set (rather, dropped) onto her feet unceremoniously. "Ace, you can't be letting them do this!" She addressed the other young woman in the room, the one whom the Doctor seemed to stare at with naked hunger in his eyes. Rose did not know whether to be jealous or not in that moment and decided to analyze her feelings later. Maybe, she thought, he was just as hopeful as she was, hopeful that Ace would shake off the strange hold the Rani had over her and do something constructive…
"I…" Ace seemed to straighten in her voluminous robes, straighten and swallow hard. "Gallifrey must be rebuilt. The Doctor destroyed it and we must resurrect it." She darted a glance at the Doctor himself then, her lips twitching somewhere between sorrow and pleasure. "Doctor…"
"You've lost the right to talk to him," Rose barked, surprised by the anger welling in her breast. She stepped away from the silent Rani and found the Doctor's intent gaze to be focused on her now, flaying her alive as she walked slowly, haltingly, towards him. "Do the Looms hurt?"
"What?" He shook himself as horror bloomed on his features, his eyes darkening and hands moving to rake through his already disheveled hair. "Oh, no, Rose… No!"
She felt as if she were moving underwater, her entire existence brought to one dark point, one single moment which would define her eternity. "If I let you add me," she addressed the Rani and the Master, doing her best to ignore the Doctor's shouted demands that she stop, even as he struggled against the hands that held him, "will you let him live? Will you drop this stupid trial and let him go? Let him return to Jack and get out of here?"
The Rani did not so much smile as exude and air of amusement. "Why would we do that? The Doctor must pay for his grievous crimes…"
"If you let him go," Rose cut her off, "I'll give myself to you for your bleedin' Looms." She swallowed a thick wave of nausea and straightened her spine. She could do this… she had been ready to do this for him before, to risk her life and well being just to make sure he was okay, he survived. "You saved me once," she said softly, her restless eyes coming to rest on the Doctor, his lanky, shaking form filling them. "I trust you." With a defiant sniff, she turned a hard gaze to the Rani and the Master. "Let him go back to the TARDIS now. When he's safe and gone, you can add me to your Loom and save your precious Gallifrey."
The Doctor reeled, his belly cramping as Rose turned away, but not before he caught a glimpse of darkness in her eyes, a familiar and terrifying sheen that had come from him, from his existence. He remembered Bad Wolf… he knew what she was capable of if pressed. Was she pressed? Of course she was, he thought, letting the Master pull him towards the door, his tongue cleaved to the roof of his mouth in sheer, unmitigated terror. No one had ever been able to terrify him like Rose, a distant thought announced. No one had ever been able to shake him to his very foundations like she had… "Rose," his voice sounded as if it were being torn from his throat. "Rose! Don't do it!"
"Doctor," her tone was soft, almost laughing, but the hitch at the end of the simple word gave her away. "My Doctor…" She did not turn to face him, but bowed her head and inhaled deeply, her shoulders rising and falling with the effort. "You told me once, the best way to remember you was to have a good life."
"Rose!" The shift in his paradigm was dizzying. He felt weak, lost. He could not muster the strength to fight the Master, to fight off the Rani. Even Ace, once his ally and now just…there…would have been able to overpower him then, body and soul. "Rose, please!"
She shuddered, the naked plea wounding her to her very core. "Have a fantastic life, Doctor. I…"
"Enough!" The Rani moved then, surging forward to grab Rose by the upper arm. "Take him to his TARDIS. We'll prepare the Loom. Rose Tyler of Earth, you have finally done something useful."
