ch 39
Grissom let Sara sleep. It was their last night off before they returned to work. It had been a long drive back and she was too tired to drive. Grissom drove the whole way. He was surely exhausted, but the pregnancy was taking a bit of getting used to for her. He got up and started dinner before she awoke.
Sara woke up when she felt the familiar queasiness. She also checked beside her to discover that Grissom was awake. He was still having the dreams of her falling through the ice on a regular basis. Every time she would have to reassure him all over again it had just been a dream.
He heard footsteps and went to investigate. Sara was missing from the bedroom. Then he heard the toilet flush and knew she had been sick again.
He ran and got her a glass of water and returned to the bathroom. He knocked lightly, "Sara, you ok?"
The door opened a little and a hand reached for the water glass. "Thanks, Griss."
"Anything else?"
"Don’t think so."
"Kay, I'll be in the kitchen, holler if you need me." The door closed again. He busied himself in the kitchen waiting for her to emerge from the bathroom. After another ten minutes, Sara finally did emerge.
"Feeling better?" He asked. Grissom had only asked because Sara's skin tone was the same eerie pale white that it was in his dreams. "Can I get you some crackers?"
Sara went for the cracker cupboard. All she wanted was bed and tea with crackers.
"Anything else you want?"
She shook her head and padded back to bed.
Waiting for the pill she took to kick in…it was only a few weeks but she hated the morning sickness already. He followed her to the bedroom. You going to be able to go to work tonight?"
"Might call in sick."
"You don't look good, Sara. I think you need to recuperate a little more." Sara nodded and half closed the bedroom door behind her.
"You want to be alone?" I can take a hint.
""Just not feeling well."
"I'm sorry, Honey, I really am."
"I'll leave you alone, I'll be in the kitchen."
"You don’t have to leave me alone...but okay."
"Can I stay? I'd rather stay with you." Sara flipped back the covers on the bed. He crawled back in beside her.
Grissom crawled under the covers with her. Sara wrapped her arms around his waist, resting her head against his chest. It was very rapidly becoming her favourite sleeping position.
"Did you want me to call in sick too?" He whispered.
Sara couldn't resist a smile. "That's sweet, baby, but not necessary." After a second thought, she added, "But if you're that worried about me, I wouldn't mind the company."
"I'll be right back." He jumped up and made the appropriate phone calls. "All fixed." He curled up with her again. His hands found her belly lightly rubbing her skin there. Sara didn't know why, but her eyes were feeling up with tears. Her hand went on top of his.
"How long until I can feel the baby?" He asked.
“About another four months."
Disappointed, he replied. "That long."
"You can still talk to him though," Sara tried to cheer Grissom up.
"Its a him?"
"Well...I like to think so," Sara said a bit awkwardly.
"A boy, egh." He crawled down until he was right over her belly. "Hey little guy, this is your daddy, can you hear me?" He can, Grissom. They always can. Sara continued to stroke the back of Grissom's neck as she listened to him talk to her stomach. Tears fell down her face. "Mommy and I may make some mistakes, but you will have to forgive us, we are new at this." He kissed her belly. "I promise you this, we will always love you, no matter what." Sara kissed Grissom's forehead.
"Are you crying?" he asked, "Are you ok, honey?"
"Must be the pregnancy," Sara murmured. "Either that, or I'm a bigger sap than I thought I was," Sara added with a small grin.
"Are you happy?" He asked not knowing what to expect for an answer.
Sara put her arms around Grissom. "Happy is a bit of an understatement."
"I know what you mean." He kissed her lips.
"I love you," Sara whispered as the tears fell again.
"I love you too. Never forget that."
Sara rubbed her stomach. "See? Daddy wants to take care of both of us," she talked softly to it.
He enjoyed the reaction between Sara and the baby. He found it endearing.
"We're going to be okay, Angel," Sara continued in a whisper. "Don't you worry…"
"How did I ever live without you?" He asked not really meaning to say it out loud.
Sara wiped her eyes as she gently pulled Grissom into her embrace. "I ask myself the same thing."
"I should have never left Frisco."
'It was a prime opportunity, Grissom. You would have kicked yourself if you didn't go," Sara said softly.
"But I lost you. It wasn't really worth it."
"You have me now."
"But we lost so much time, Sara."
"We'll make up for it," Sara promised.
"I hope so."
Sara gently cupped Grissom's face so he could see her eyes. "I know so." He knew from the look in her eyes she spoke the truth. Sara softly kissed him.
"Ready to go back to sleep? I'm tired."
"Close your eyes, baby," Sara whispered, stroking him gently. His breathing shallowed and he fell asleep in her arms.
