ch 38
"They'll be happy for us...once they get over their shock."
"Have you read the policies at work? Is this allowed?"
"I'm not good with politics."
“We’ll have to keep it discreet."
"How are we going to keep this discreet? Once I start to show the cat will be out of the proverbial bag."
"Keep it among the team."
"What about when Jr appears?"
"I'll say someone else is the father. Or...I'll say it was artificial insemination."
"You don't have to do that. I'm not ashamed. I can always look into consulting or teaching. I don't want to deny my relationship with you or this baby."
"Let’s cross that bridge when we get there. I... I don't want to think about it right now."
"Alright,” He said. "If that's what you want."
"It's not that it's good to plan ahead...I just...” She hugged him. "I'd hate the thought of you losing your job because of me.”
"It wouldn't be losing my job. I'd be gaining a family."
"Okay...We'll call your consulting business a backup plan. Does that work?"
"Sure thing. I can teach too."
Sara gave Grissom a small smile. "Now that we've gotten that out of the way, let's get the prescription and get out of here, huh?"
"Sounds good. I have a need to cuddle with my wife to be."
Wife to be...wow. Sara put her hand in Grissom's and the two of them took the elevator up three floors to the drug store. He had a permanent grin on his face
"What's the grin for, Doc?" Sara asked
"I'm happy. This is new for me."
Ten minutes later, they got their purchase and were back at the cabin once again. He opened the door and ushered Sara into the cabin. Sara immediately went into the kitchen. She poured herself a glass of juice and took a pill.
"How are you feeling, Honey?"
"Kind of tired. I think I need a nap."
"Ok. I guess I'll watch some TV." He thought she might want to be alone.
Sara was a little hurt, but she chalked it up to the pregnancy and managed to shrug it off. She gave Grissom a smile and limped down the hall to the bedroom to lie down.
He sat on the couch and flicked through the stations. He only did that for a few minutes. He got lonely and headed to the bedroom where Sara was. He knocked on the door. "Sara, Can I join you?" He asked almost silently because if she was sleeping he didn't want to wake her.
"Mmm..." came the murmured reply. A hand reached out from under the covers, searching for him.
"Can I join you?" He repeated.
"Mhm."
He took that as a yes and went to join her in the bed. As soon as Sara felt the bed shift, she turned in Grissom's direction, looking for his arms. He cuddled her into his chest.
"Anything good on TV?" Sara muttered sleepily.
"No. I got lonely out there all by myself." Sara softly stroked his chest soothingly. "What do you want, Sara, a boy or a girl?" He asked out of nowhere.
"Doesn't matter to me either way. As long as they're healthy." A pause. "And have your eyes."
He smiled. "You want them to have my eyes? I think there is a good chance they will have curly hair."
"All the better."
"You know, I wish you wouldn't straighten yours. I like it all curly and dishevelled."
"When did you ever see me with curly hair?"
"Back in Boston. I miss it. It makes you look so sexy." Grissom couldn't see, but Sara was blushing beet red. "Will you leave it curly...for me?"
"Of course."
"Good." He murmured as he ran his fingers through her hair.
"So you still want me to move in with you, huh?"
"Yes. Why would you think anything different?"
"Just making sure," was the soft response. “this is all new to me too; it is like I am living in a dream.”
"I'm not changing my mind."
"Okay."
"So what do you want to do about a house?"
"I think we're good in the townhouse for a while."
"You don't want a place of our own?"
"I think we should save towards it if we can."
"We don't need to save, Sara. I have more than enough money to buy another place. The townhouse will sell for a good price too."
"You’d do that for me?"
"Of course I would. Why would you doubt that?"
"I don't," Sara promised as she cuddled closer.
"I have no one else to spend my money on so now that I have a family, you are it."
Sara couldn't resist a smile. "Let's see if you still say that when our child wants to borrow the car and stay out late."
"That will be a while yet...right?" He was noticeably nervous.
"Don't mind me, Grissom...just being girlish again." Sara kissed his forearm.
"I think it’s cute. Besides I hope you don't mind if I spoil you rotten." He looked at her. "What kind of house do you want?"
"Can we spend some time house hunting?"
"If that's what you want, yes. Do you want one in Vegas? In the town? In Suburbia? The next county? Where?"
Sara softly giggled at the excitement in Grissom's voice. "We'll look into it, baby."
Satisfied with her answer he muttered, "Ok."
"Se when is this little guy due?" He said pointing to her belly.
"Around.....April. By my calculations."
"So we got some busy time ahead of us."
"Yeah." Was the only thing Sara said as she began to feel nervous. She felt better when she reassured herself that Mara would help them out. "I’m sure Mara and Cliff would be more than happy to help us out."
"So, I'll get to meet these people?"
"Gonna call them when we get home."
"Good."
"So are we gonna consider this a reverse honeymoon?"
"It's the honeymoon before the honeymoon," Sara grinned.
"Funny. So where do you want to go for a Honeymoon, Miss Sidle?"
"I've never been to Athens."
"As in Greece?" Sara nodded. "I guess we could go if you like."
'But we don't have to...I just...I've just always wanted to go, having been to most of Europe and Australia already."
"No that's fine. I hear there is an amazing roller coaster there. When do you want to go?"
"Let's pick a wedding date first, huh?"
"Fine with me."
"And you still have to get me an official engagement ring." Sara didn't think he had to but she couldn't resist bugging him.
"As soon as we get back to Vegas, I promise." He kissed her lightly.
"And you have to propose."
"I didn't?"
"Not officially, no."
"I suppose you want me on one knee and everything."
Sara kissed him when she realized he was getting nervous. "Do it how you will, Grissom. I don't even have to have a ring."
"No if I'm going to do this, I will do it right."
Suit yourself. "Grissom?"
“Yes."
" Think I’m getting hungry again. Would you be a love and see what we have?"
"You didn't eat much today, what do you want? You are eating for two now. The cupboards are still stocked."
"Are you up to making your chilli and pasta with the garlic bread? I really enjoyed that when you made it the other night." Sara gave him her doe eyes again.
"Sure, if that's what you want. You are going to stay here?" He asked getting up.
"Want to me to keep you company?"
"If you want. I don't want to bother your nap. I already woke you up."
Sara reached her arms out for Grissom to pick her up, since she knew she couldn't walk. "Please..."
He carried her out and deposited her on the couch. He went to work preparing their food.
"Sara, can we make a pact to not name the baby after family?" That came from nowhere. "I was tortured with Gilbert my whole life. Children are cruel."
"Okay. If that's what you want, baby doll." Baby doll?
Baby Doll? "Kay thanks." He said throwing the ingredients into the saucepan. "Do you want TVP in this for protein or tofu?"
""Tofu"
"Alright, I fry it up with the onions and mushrooms. The sauce needs to simmer."
"Okay." A play by play really isn't necessary, Gil
He turned the saucepan on low and went in to sit with her on the couch. "Anything good on TV?"
"Why don't you choose something?" Sara gave him the remote as she reached for the left over soda crackers on the coffee table. The Diclectin was kicking in. But now she wanted to nibble.
"You still feeling nauseous?" He asked flicking the stations. "How about the forensics Channel. Maybe we can learn something."
"Sure." He stared blankly at the screen. "Griss?"
The beautiful baby stared back at him with the Grissom blue eyes. He looked down at his gorgeous tired wife. Still sweating from childbirth and couldn’t stop smiling. He has never been this happy in his life.
"What?" He asked snapping back to reality.
"You okay?"
"I’m fine." I'm worried about you.
Sara nodded in acknowledgment. I am dying for a root beer. 'Do we have any soda?"
"In the fridge, want one?"
"Please."
"I need to stir my stuff. I'll be right back."
He returned to his spot on the couch and passed Sara her root beer. Sara glanced briefly at Grissom, giving him a smile, before going back to the screen.
"Food is nearly done. How hungry are you?"
"Kind of a dangerous question to ask a pregnant lady, Griss." Sara said, grinning.
"So you need a really big plate?" He joked.
"Wouldn't hurt...got to keep you in practice for the 2 am cravings and the eating eight meals a day?" She teased back.
"Eight meals a day?"
"Well, maybe a slight exaggeration, but some women do eat a lot."
"I'll set the table and dish up the food, care to join me?"
"Sure." This time, Sara tried to move on her own. As soon as she did, her bad leg began to buckle.
He rushed to her side. "I guess I'll help you. I don’t want you harming the baby."
"I'm fine. Just need a breather."
""Sara, you need to learn to let me help you."
Sara took his hand. "I know...but you know me. Miss Independence."
"If this is going to be a successful partnership, we both need to learn to give a little."
SLAP!! That’s what our fight was about when we got here, partnership. "Smells good in here," Sara commented instead as Grissom helped her to the table.
"I'll get you some, sit tight." He dished her up a plate of food with garlic bread and sat it in front of her following with some of his own.
"Is it as good as last time?” He asked diving into it.
"Better." Sara moaned a little. "I don't know what you did to it but wow!"
"Secret Recipe." He grinned.
'Yeah, yeah," Sara said as she grinned back.
"Don’t worry, I tell you my cooking secrets and even teach you to cook."
"Thanks."
"We will have years for you to perfect it." He joked.
Sara didn't answer. She smiled as she took a bite.
"So shall we continue our nap after dinner?" He asked finishing his last bite of food.
"Yea...somehow I’m still tired." Not sure if it's the pregnancy or left over exhaustion from taking care of you.
"Good, me too."
Sara lapsed into silence as she savoured Grissom's masterpiece. She found herself wondering if she would crave this when she got a little further along.
"Is there anything else you will want me to cook while we are here?"
"I'm sure I'll think of something," was the coy answer.
"I'm sure you will."
"Ready to go back to bed?"
"Yup." He said lifting her into his arms. Sara snuggled into his neck. He placed her on the bed and peeled the covers back to place her inside. He crawled in behind her.
"You comfortable?"
"Um-hm."
"Now let’s sleep."
"Um-hm..." she murmured again, falling asleep in Grissom's arms.
