Hank
Chapter: 35
Sara was preparing breakfast while Grissom changed Michael. She had a huge smile on her face. The breakthrough they’d achieved last night filled her with joy and relief. And for the first time they slept together in each others arms where they both actually slept. Deeply. She flipped over the omelette and looked up at the knock at the door.
“I’ll get it!” She shouted to Grissom who was still struggling in the nursery to get Michael’s nappy on right. He’s got a degree in entomology, anthropology and yet he couldn’t change a nappy without struggling. Woe is me!
Sara opened the door to be almost knocked on her butt as Hank came bounding in barking. Jumping up and down, running round in circles. He was home! He saw Sara and went mental, jumping up and down, slobbering everywhere, trying his best to leap into her arms.
Sara laughed. “Hey Hank baby, easy boy….” she said calming him. “Mommy’s still a little fragile”.
She got down on one knee and began frantically petting him and he lapped up every delicious moment of it.
Catherine chuckled to see Hank on his back, four legs high in the air winning like he’d just won the lottery.
“Hey Cath”, Sara said.
“Hi…I bought you some visitors…”
Sara looked up to see Nick, Greg and Brass.
“Warrick sends his apologies but he couldn’t make it. Said he’d pop by later.”
Sara smiled. “Hi guys…”
“Hey Sara”, they said in unison.
“Sara!….” Grissom’s voice bellowed through the house. “Can you give me a hand….?”
Hank shot to his feet, his ears twitching and his eyes gleaming. Just as he was about to bolt towards the nursery Sara acted with lightening speed. Quickly grabbing his collar before he had chance to run.
“No..no buster. Your not allowed in the nursery. Nick can you take him for a minute, while I go help out Mr Mom!”
“Sure Sar…no prob’s.” Nick bent and took Hanks collar and began scratching him behind the ears. Hank plonked himself down sullenly and began to pine.
Sara entered the bedroom and instantly began laughing. Grissom picked up Michael and the nappy just fell from his body.
“Struggling?”, she giggled.
Grissom gave her a scalding look and then he couldn’t help but laugh himself.
“I think I need a little more practice.”
Sara got down and helped him. “Don’t worry about it, you’ll get used to it. We have guests if you want to go say hello, I’ll finish this.”
“You sure?”
Sara kissed him softly on the lips. “Yes”.
Grissom stood and headed for the door.
“Oh and there’s a certain visitor who really is bouncing off the walls to see you!”
Grissom frowned slightly as he walked back to the lounge.
The instant Hanks eyes saw him, he bolted from Nick’s grasp and pounced on him. Licking anything his tongue came into contact with.
Grissom couldn’t have smiled any wider if he tried.
“Hey baby boy….how ya doing?” He laughed.
Hank was ecstatic. Jumping and barking. After several minutes of heavy stroking he eventually sprawled out on the floor sending his legs skywards. Grissom grinned and began to scratch his tummy.
“Did you miss daddy boy? Did you? I’m sorry I left you for so long….”
Grissom had completely forgot about his ‘other guests’ and heard them sniggering at his actions. He looked up to see Greg creased over and Brass and Nick trying soooo hard to keep their laughter in.
“What? Am I not allowed to love my dog?”
“No, no Griss….sure…it’s just a little odd seeing you….well….so playful”, Nick joked.
Grissom stood and Hank bounced to his feet, standing close by him, sticking to him like glue.
“Good to see you guys”, Grissom began. “Thanks for looking after Sara while….well….you know.”
“Don’t sweat it”, Brass said. “You know were always here.”
Grissom nodded. “Coffee?”
Everyone announced their approval all at once and headed for the kitchen.
After several minutes of light chatting Sara appeared Michael in her arms.
“Hey!”
Everyone looked up and instantly beamed into glorious smiles.
“So… how is everyone?” Sara asked.
“Great..good…cool”, came the variety of answers, everyone staring at the baby in Sara’s arms.
“So howz the little one getting along?”, Brass asked.
Sara walked to Grissom and stood close by him, noticing Hank had placed himself firmly on Grissom’s feet, basically telling him he wasn’t going where.
“He’s….amazing”, Grissom said stroking Michael’s head.
Everyone smiled.
“You want to hold him?” Sara asked Brass.
“Err…well….erm..”
Sara chuckled and headed towards him and before he could get his response out Sara had already placed Michael in his arms and moved to stand by Greg.
“There..see. He doesn’t bite Jim.”
Brass gently rocked Michael and made baby faces at him, much to the amusement of the room.
“Is that your new interrogation technique?”, Greg laughed. Sara swung and slapped Greg on the arm.
“Ow!”, he moaned.
“Serves you right…be nice.”, Sara grinned.
After several minutes of soft rocking, Nick spoke.
“Er Jim, do you mind if I….”, he held out his arms and then looked at Sara. “It’s ok if I hold him?”
Sara smiled and looped her arm into Grissom’s. “Of course it’s ok”.
Nick smiled and Jim gently passed Michael him over. Nick seemed very comfortable holding him.
“Done that before?” Greg asked smirking.
Nick grinned. “Not really..but…you know, you either have it or you don’t…
After several hours of passing Michael round and a dozen cups of coffee later Grissom and Sara were finally left in peace. Sara had put Michael to bed seemingly exhausted by all the attention he was getting and Grissom washed up all the mugs and put them away.
“Hey you…” Sara called returning to the kitchen
Grissom placed the cloth down he was holding, “Hey…”
Sara wrapped her arms around his waist and placed her head on his chest sighing contently, a slight yawn escaping her lips. She giggled as Hank decided to entwine himself between their legs, he’d never left their side since he’d got home.
“Tired?” Grissom asked.
Sara nodded, “A little. I think these last few months are finally catching up on me.”
“You want to take a nap?”
Sara thought for a second.
“One one condition…..”
Grissom looked on, listening, as Sara looked up to him.
“Come with me…?”
Grissom smiled and took her hand leading her to the bedroom. Hank in hot pursuit.
