ch 34

“Mr. Grissom, Mrs Grissom after extensive tests we have concluded that you have ‘Hantavirus’.”

“I have what?”

“Hantavirus” is a flu-like disease that is carried by a particular species
of deer mouse found primarily but not limited to the Colorado Plateaus and in its caves and canyons. It’s a deadly disease for about 50% of those who contract it! However, it may incubate for as long as 2 weeks before symptoms appear. The person thinks they have the flu, and they don’t see a doctor.”

Sara looked at Grissom. “See, my worry wasn’t that silly.”

“Then they’re usually dead within 24 hours! Most of those, 50% lives are saved were because the person went to the doctor and it was recognized as Hantavirus. You really need to thank your wife, Mr Grissom for urging you to come here; she has saved your life.”

“Thanks sweetie.” He cooed.

“I told you to humour my worries.”

“Always be aware of your health condition for at least 2 weeks after visiting Canyon Country or the desert in some instances such as this.”

“What causes this doctor?”

“This disease can only be contracted if the feces of the mouse become airborne and are breathed in by the victim.”

“What caused this?”

“The sandstorm I am sure.”

“SO what does this mean for me?” Grissom asked.

“Treatment mostly involves supportive care. Providing oxygen and treatment to stabilize the blood pressure appear to be most crucial to recovery from illness. For kidney damage, dialysis may be needed and can be lifesaving.”
“Do I have kidney damage?”

“No, we caught it in time but we do need you to stay in for a few days.”

“What about when I get out?”

“I suggest a different climate until the tests come back clear. Can you transfer somewhere else? The hot dry deserts will be awful for the first while. Hard on your respiratory tract.”

“I’ll figure something out.”

“We will be here for you, Gil.” Sara assured him.

“Thank you Sara, for everything but I think you need to go home and get some rest. I will be ok I promise.”

“I’ll be back tomorrow. Please call me later, ok.”

“Ok.”
