Feeling better
Chapter: 32
Sara opened her eyes and reached out. Frowning to feel nothing but a cold pillow. She looked at the clock. It had been 3 hours since her and Grissom had collapsed on the bed still holding each other. Neither had said a word since the embrace began. Grissom had fallen asleep first, totally exhausted and again Sara watched him. Worry consuming her mind, she had tried to stay awake, just in case he woke and needed her, but finally fatigue took over and she drifted into sleep. She knew Michael was due a feed and was concerned at the absence of Grissom. So she got up quickly, grabbed a robe and headed to the nursery. She cringed slightly, still very sore from the birth, but continued with haste. She reached the nursery to find it empty. She frowned and headed for the lounge, a little worry encasing her but it disappeared quickly as she found Grissom, sitting by the window rocking Michael gently in his arms. A smile appeared on her face as she happily just stood back and watched. Grissom never taking his eyes from his son as he slept peacefully in his fathers comfort, a happy smile on his face for the first time since Sara had given birth. Then Michael began to stir just as Grissom looked up. He saw Sara watching him, smiling, leaning against the far wall.
“Hi.” He said softly.
“Hi.” She replied. “You ok?”
Grissom nodded and sighed a content sigh. “Yeah.”
Sara kicked off the wall and headed for him just as Michael began to wail. Loud!
Grissom looked down to see his sons distressed face.
“Dinner time”, Sara said holding out her hands.
Grissom carefully passed Michael over and Sara took him. She sat on the sofa and began to feed him.
Once he’d finished Sara carefully cupped his face and burped him. Then the aroma caught her nostrils.
“I think he needs changing”.
“You want me to do it?” Grissom asked.
Sara shook her head. “No, but you can help me. Do it together?”
Grissom smiled.
“Can you get the bag?” Sara asked.
Grissom nodded and went to retrieve the baby bag. He laid out a blanket on the floor and Sara carefully placed Michael down, he wriggled on the floor and popped his tiny hand in his mouth. Sara began to take off the diaper.
“Good god!”, she laughed seeing what was awaiting her. It wasn’t pretty. It actually took Grissom aback slightly. He hadn’t had much experience in this but it was everywhere!
“Well young man”, Sara continued wiping his bottom. “Praise the time when you get onto solids. Your mommy does have a hard constitution but….geez!”
Grissom chuckled and it made Sara’s heart lighten, he was actually laughing.
Grissom handed her a fresh nappy and disposed of the dirty wipes in the waste basket.
“He looks just like you , you know?” Sara said.
Grissom looked his son over as Sara pulled him back into her arms, clean bottom and all.
“You think so?”
Sara nodded. “I do. He has your eyes and your chin.”
Grissom smiled. “But her has your nose”.
“Yeah, well at this point in time, he can have my nose, cos what I was just smelling….not that great.”
Grissom chuckled again as he took her hand and pulled her to her feet. She reached over and gently ran a finger along his cheek. “I’m glad your feeling a little better. I’ve missed it when you laugh, smile….I’ve missed….you. And you know I‘m here….always. Anytime you want to talk, about anything. I‘m always open for business.”
Grissom smiled again and nodded.
Sara leaned over and kissed him on the cheek, and Grissom felt her warmth radiate through his skin.
Sara sighed a little. She had definitely missed him, and especially the intimacy they had shared. She knew it was still very earlier in his recovery, physical and mental. And she’d also had Michael. But at no point since he’d woken in the hospital had he attempted any kind of intimate contact with her. Apart from the obvious hugs and holding hands. She was aching for just a kiss, for a touch. Gentle or passionate she didn’t care. She just wanted to be close to him and feel his skin on hers, and his lips taking her to places she thought she’d never go. But she wasn’t about to demand anything or push him in any way. She had the hope that he would make the right choice at the right time. What was right for him….for them.
Michael wriggled in Sara’s arms. “It looks like he’s going to be up for a while so…want to watch a movie or something?”
“Sure” he replied and they headed to the sofa.
Sara sat and Grissom rummaged through the DVD cabinet.
“Fancy anything in particular?” he asked
Sara shook her head. “What ever you want.”
Grissom’s eyes scanned the multitudes of movies at his disposal, but nothing really grabbed his fancy. He looked back at Sara.
“Do you mind if we just see what’s on TV? I think we need to update our collection.”
Sara shrugged his shoulders. “Ok, what ever you want babe, I don’t mind”.
Grissom sat close to Sara and picked up the remote and began flicking. Sara saw his eyes light up as he got to the discovery channel and a documentary about bugs. She chuckled slightly and he looked at her.
“Is this ok?” He asked.
Sara smiled reaching out to take his hand in hers and snuggled a little closer.
“It’s fine”.
Grissom pulled her towards him so she lay with her feet up, back on his chest and Michael on hers. They both sighed at the contact and the warmth as he wrapped his arms around her waist and settled.
About an hour later the documentary finished and Grissom looked down to see both Sara and Michael had fallen asleep. He gently ran his hand through her hair. He’d missed her, he missed this. He was content in just watching her breathing lightly in his embrace but he knew at the back of his mind….he wanted more.
