Chapter 30

Chapter 30

A year into Superman’s arrival, Clark’s return and Superman saving countless thousands, millions of lives and Lois herself many times and her saving him just as many times too. A year into Clark being back found Clark riding with Lois to her home at 2:30 PM instead of their usual 6 to work on a story that they had to research. When they got their they sat down at the kitchen table and set to work while during small breaks Chloe aka Lois made some supper. Half an hour later found a 7 year old Brian walking into the apartment but not alone. He had brought a friend home from school to introduce to his mother.

When he came in the door and smelled pasta he smirked at his friend. They threw their bags on the couch and took their shoes off.

Brian said smirking at his friend and putting his arm around his shoulders, “Come on I want you to meet my mom.”

His friend began blushing bright red when Brian’s arm came around him and he squeaked out, “Okay.”

“Hey Mom!”

“I’m in the kitchen honey!”

“Oh, Mom—do you have to keep calling me honey all the time?” Brian asked exasperated as he stepped into the kitchen with his friend right behind him.

“But you are my honey, honey…and whose your friend?”

“Justin Ma’am. My name’s Justin,” the boy said holding out his hand to Chloe, “it’s nice to meet you Ms. Lane.”

“Well its every nice to meet you too Justin. Would you like to join us for supper?”

“Um sure, can I call my parents to ask?”

“Of course dear the phone’s just in the living room.”

“Hey Mr. Kent working on another story?” Brian asked Clark with a tongue in cheek smirk and cool voice.

“That would be my understanding of all this paperwork, Pal.” Clark replied with a smirk of his own as he ruffled Brian’s hair.

“Are you joining us for supper again?” Brian asked with a twinge of hope in his voice.

Brian idolized Clark almost as much as he idolized Superman it seemed sometimes.

“It looks like I might be.”

“Cool.”

“My parents say it’s okay if I eat with you Ms. Lane…Ms. Lane they wanted me to ask if maybe I could stay the night they’re going out to a business party for my dad and they can’t get a babysitter. Would it be alright?” Justin stated popping his head in.

“That’s fine dear. You can share Brian’s room.”

“Okay, thanks.”

“Supper should be done in half an hour. Why don’t you boys go to Brian’s room and do your homework until supper and I’ll call you when its ready.”

“Okay Mom, come on Justin I’ll show you the way.”

“Okay.”

“Do you want help making supper Lois?”

“Um, yeah could you get the salads made Clark?”

“Sure.”

“Mom! Mom, Help!”

Hearing her son’s worried and scared voice she ran to his room as fast as her feet could carry her. Clark quickly turned off the stove and followed Chloe. Only to find her stopped in Brian’s bedroom doorway as pale as a ghost with a bright light flashing. When the light cleared her son was cradling Justin’s unconscious body.

But he didn’t look the same as he had a few minutes ago, where was her dark blonde, hazel-green eyed little boy? Brian still had his hazel-green eyes but they had just a bit more brown in them now and his hair was a lighter brunette than dark blonde while his friend had gone from a dark brunette with gray-blue eyes. Now he was a dark blonde with piercing blue eyes.

“Bri…Brian, what happened honey?”

But when Brian looked up at his mom to explain he passed out.

“Brian! Clark, call Dr. Hamilton and Dr. Dovey Brian’s pediatrician and hurry!”

“Okay, try getting him in bed.”

“Ms…Ms. Lane, is Bri ok?”

“Yes, Justin he’ll be fine but maybe you should go home for the night instead I’ll send Brian’s baby sitter over if your parents don’t mind?”

“NO! I mean…I can’t…I-I ran away from home and Brian found me…”

“Why, did you run away honey, if you don’t mind me asking?”

“Because…my dad’s not the nicest guy. My mom doesn’t pay attention, she’s always asleep from the pills and drinks she takes. My sister’s always on the street doing what girls on the street do. I wanted out! My only escape has been school…and my only friend is Bri…Ms. Lane, when I ran into Brian I was beat up pretty bad, close to death really and I’ve been there before trust me I know what it feels like. He looked right at me and touched my shoulder and there was this light and when it was gone I felt so much better, like new. I think he…he healed me Ms. Lane. Did he? I won’t tell anyone! I promise…I- I care for him, Ms. Lane. I won’t tell, promise.”

Chloe could see Justin rising slowly to his feet and coming to sit on the other side of the bed as Chloe picked up and put Brian on the bed. Brian was cold, clammy; his skin was going bluish-gray. He wasn’t reacting to anything she did. While Justin spoke her heart was clenching out of fear for her son, what had happened before and now, and for his new found friend. She was afraid Justin would tell but when she saw his eyes the deep caring and affection she knew she had nothing to fear. Justin would be a loyal friend to Brian that was if Brian ever woke up.

Chlo…Ms. Lane, move away from the bed. You too young man,” Dr. Hamilton said as he rushed into the room with not only Clark behind him but a young woman.

“Young man, do you know what happened here?”

“Yeah, Bri saved my life twice and now he can’t handle it. He told me, Everything. But don’t worry I won’t tell anyone, promise. Just make him better.”

“What do you mean by everything?”

“I mean everything. Bri said he’d never hurt me, never lie and he hasn’t.”

“Clark maybe you can take Mr…”

“Justin.”

“Justin and Ms. Lane to the other room until we’ve had a look at Brian.”

“Okay, come on you two let’s go sit. I’ll make tea.”

Three days later found Clark’s mother getting temporary custody of Justin and Brian finally waking up from his power induced coma. Chloe had called in sick and called Brian in sick too. Justin had visited as much as he could when Mrs. Kent brought him. When he visited he never left Brian’s side, Mrs. Kent had to almost pull him away.

The day Brian woke up found him waking up to concerned piercing blue eyes of his dear friend Justin, “Hey there Blue Eyes. How long have I been out?”

“Three days! You scared me. I know you told me you sometimes black out or go into these comas but telling me didn’t prepare me for the real thing, Bri. I was scared!” Justin cried launching himself into Brian’s arms forcing Brian to fall back heavily into the bed even more than he already was.

Brian instinctively wrapped his arms around Justin and said, “Sorry, didn’t mean to. Really.”

“Brian!” his mom’s voice said coming from the other side of the door but before he could reply she burst in with such relief in her eyes. When she saw him awake she began to cry and ran over and hugged him as tightly as she could.

“Okay Mom I get it your happy I’m back but really squeezing the life out of me is kind of counterproductive don’t you think.”

“Oh, you! Your too smart for your own good sometimes. I’m going to call the doctors to have a look at you and then we’re celebrating.”

“Can Justin join us?” Brian asked grabbing his friend’s shaking hands.

“Of course, honey.” Chloe replied seeing the deep affection between the two and knowing this was an affection that would one day grow into more. She was worried but not scared or angry. All she ever wanted for her son was to be safe and happy and seeing him with Justin she knew Justin did that. But she was afraid of one thing, well maybe two, the world hating and condemning her son for what he was whatever that was on top of his powers and losing her son. The dream she had had when she was pregnant was coming back to haunt her. It had been since they started training his powers but especially when he had scenes like this one. He had only had a few others before but they were getting worse and it was frightening her.

A few hours later after Justin had been pulled away to go with Mrs. Kent yet again Chloe and Brian met with the doctors. The doctors proceeded to tell them both if Brian was to use his powers to the extent he did a few days ago even once he wouldn’t be waking up ever again. This frightened the 7 year old but he was a smart kid he understood what was going on, what his life was like and wasn’t afraid to face it head on.
