Who is Maya?

LEGAL BRIEF

A L.A. Law fanfiction

Author’s Note: Hi! I know! It’s been forever since I’ve updated this story. But, I’ve finally emerged from the hollow shell that writer’s block left me in (LOL). Anyway, before we continue the story, I need to let you know a few things that are pertinent to the story. I should have mentioned it at the beginning but I forgot…sorry. Anyway, this takes place during the last year that Victor Sifuentes was seen on L.A. Law. You’ll need to know that during the later chapters but as of now, it’s not pertinent to the story, just keep it in mind. Okay? Okay. Now on with the show…well, except for the…

Disclaimer: Yes, this goes without saying…I do not hold any authorship or copyrights to L.A. Law or its’ characters. They are the sole property of Steven Bochco. I do own rights to the characters that I’ve come up with. You’ll know ‘em when you see ‘em. ;-)

Chapter Three: Who is Maya?

After Maya’s abrupt departure from the courtroom, Victor tried to get her out of his mind. He plodded through opening day of the trial, making his opening statement as firm as he wanted, but Maya was still very much on his mind. By the time, the judge excused them for the day; Victor was exhausted from trying to hide the fact that he was not giving his client his undivided attention.
As the judge left the courtroom, Denise turned to Victor. “So, be honest, Mr. Sifuentes,” she began, “how strong is the case?”
Victor looked at her. He smiled, hoping it conveyed his assurance that they could win. “I’m not going to lie to you, Denise, it’s going to be difficult,” he began, “but I really think we have a chance to win.”
Denise smiled. “Okay, that’s what I needed to hear,” she said. “Thanks.”
“No problem,” Victor assured her, picking up his briefcase, “are you ready to go?”
She nodded her assent as Victor led her through the courtroom to the throng of reporters who were still clogging the hallway. As they made their way through, they noticed Bennett standing in the middle of the throng, just as he was before the trial. Only this time, he wasn’t playing up to the cameras and reporters. His face was motionless. Victor had heard the question that prompted the change in Bennett’s visage; they had asked about his wife. As he led Denise through the corridor, Victor filed the information away for future use.

**********

After she ran out of the courthouse, Maya grabbed a cab that had pulled up to the curb. Sliding in after the previous occupant, she gave the driver her address.
Upon her arrival home, she was met at the door with the butler. After a brief greeting, she retreated to her bedroom upstairs.
She spent the rest of the day alone dreading the moment when he would return and she would have to pay for her absence in the courtroom.
It was five o’clock when she heard the door open and his voice boomed throughout the house, “where is she?”
Maya sighed and closed her journal. She stashed it underneath her bras and panties in her bureau drawer and turned to leave her bedroom.
Before she could leave, the door burst open. Roger Bennett stood fuming in the open doorway. “Where the hell were you?” he demanded, “we had a deal.”
Maya sighed. “Something came up,” she managed through a whisper. She knew he wouldn’t accept that excuse and waited for the explosion.
She didn’t have to wait long. “Something came up? Something came up,” he fumed, “why don’t you tell me just what came up, Maya? We had a deal. You were supposed to acte the the perfect little ‘wifey’ today.”
“I can’t explain it to you,” Maya told him, “it’s just something…”
She started to turn away but Roger grabbed her arm and jerked her back. “Don’t turn your back on me,” he hissed. “I’ve given you every freedom since this marriage started, so I demand an explanation.”
Maya began to get scared but also a part of her was furious. ‘How dare he treat her this way like he owns her!’ “I don’t owe you anything, Roger, least of all an explanation. You don’t own me.”
Roger’s lip curled into something resembling a smile. Or maybe it was a smirk. Maya decided it was a smirk. “Oh really? Is that what you think?” he asked her, pulling her closer, his face inches from hers. Suddenly his lips were on hers, forcing her mouth open. His jammed his tongue between her lips, surprising her. Just as suddenly, he pulled away. “Think about that. Who owns whom?”
“You pig!” Maya said as she struggled to get free.
Rogaughaughed and forced his mouth on hers again. This time, Maya reacted by biting down, catching his bottom lip. Roger flinched in pain, releasing her. “Bitch!” he yelled, holding his lip.
Maya hurried to get away from him. Before she could get to the door, Roger whipped around and grabbed her again. He pinned her against the wall. “I think it’s time we learned the rules of this marriage,” he said, holding her arms above her head.
Maya started to feel really afraid. ‘Would he rape her?’ she wondered. They had yet to consummate their short marriage. Theirs was not a union built by love; they had the classic marriage-of-convenience.
Roger brought his face close to hers and peered in her eyes. “You will be my wife tonight, in every sense of the word.”
Working on pure adrenalin, Maya managed to get her hands free and pushed him away. Stunned from the force, Roger stumbled backward. Maya ran out the door and down theirs.irs.
She didn’t stop until she was outside. She looked around and spotted Roger’s car in the driveway. She ran to it, praying the keys were still in it. She wrenched open the door and spotted the keys dangling from the ignition. As she got in, she spotted Roger coming toward her from the house. Locking the door, she turned the ignition waiting for it to catch. Just as Roger reached the car and started pounding on the window, the car roared to life. Maya shifted into gear and tore out of the driveway. Soon, the house was nothing but a speck in her rear-view mirror.

**********

It was past six o’clock when she arrived at his apartment building. Maya wasn’t sure he would even see her after what happened in the courtroom, but he was the only person she wanted to see. He was whom she needed to see. As she walked up the stairs to his apartment, Maya began to worry he wasn’t home.
Reaching his door, she took a breath before she knocked. She could feel the butterflies in her stomach as she waited for a response. Nothing. Victor wasn’t home. Maya felt defeated. She rested her forehead on the door and let the tears that had been building up fall.
She stood that way for close to fifteen minutes when she heard footsteps on the stairs. ‘Great’ she thought, ‘now his neighbors will think I’m some weirdo crying on his door.’ Wiping her wet cheeks, Maya turned around.
“Maya,” Victor said, surprised to see her.
Though she had been wanting and waiting for him, suddenly seeing Victor made Maya scared. Scared and embarrassed. New tears began to fall down her face and she suddenly felt her knees begin to buckle.
Victor saw this and dropped his briefcase. He rushed toward her and caught her before she fell to the floor. Maya clung to him as he wrapped his arms around her. Victor held her silently as she cried into his chest.

(please review! I really would like feedback on this one. I know this chapter was confusing, but don’t worry, all will be revealed in time.)
