No Rest for the Wicked
Summary: an idea of what happens a few days after the season finally, Season 2.
Jax was asleep in the rocking chair by Abel's bed. That's how Opie found him. The Prince of SAMCRO didn't even look peaceful in his sleep, sitting there clutching his son's blanket with a frown on his face. It was only a few seconds later as Opie stood in the doorway that Jax slowly opened his eyes already looking in his direction.
"Could feel you there," Jax’s voice was rough from sleep.
"Have you slept much?"
"Of course I haven't," Jax replied. He laid the blanket on the side of the crib.
"Clay sent me for ya," Opie said. "We're going to go see someone about getting a lead on Cameron. Some other Irish guy. Chibs has the info. He's waiting for us outside."
"It's about time. I've been sitting here for days just going crazy," Jax said and tried to walk past Opie.
Opie stopped him with a hand on his arm.
"We gotta pack you for an overnight," Opie said.
Opie went into Jax's room and started opening the dresser looking for a couple of shirts and a change of underwear.
"Where's your bag?" Opie said.
Jax dug it out of the closet and threw it on the bed and Opie started packing a few things inside for him. A slow warmth spread through his chest watching Opie take care of him.
"I'm gonna get your toothbrush," Opie said and left the room.
Jax went to his hidden stash and armed himself.
Opie came back in with a small travel toothbrush and hand towel that probably should have been replaced months ago.
"I got all the other necessities," Opie said. "I still had some of the mini toothpaste from my roadtrip."
"Where's Clay?" Jax said.
"Clay and Tig are working with Unser about your mom," Opie said. "Chibs and I told him we could handle this. My dad will come too if you want. It's just about getting a lead on Cameron."
Jax shook his head. Opie put the towel and toothbrush in the bag and zipped it closed.
"How do you do it, man?" Jax said quietly. Opie barely heard the whisper.
"Do what?"
"Donna's only been dead a short while. You already seem to be feeling better," Jax said.
"What are you trying to say? Is this about Lyla?" Opie said suddenly defensive.
"I mean..." Jax started.
"Cause I'm not over Donna, bro. That shit still fucking hurts so fucking much all I can see is blood sometimes," Opie said.
Jax held up his hand.
"I'm sorry. I'm not...," Jax said. "I just, I don't know if I can ever get over this."
"Jax, there's a big difference," Opie said. "Abel's alive. We'll find him. You gotta believe that."
Jax nodded. "Yeah."
"Do you wanna call Tara before we go," Opie said.
That was apparently the wrong thing to say because Opie watched Jax 's face go from calming right back to pained.
"What's wrong?" Opie said.
"I haven't seen her," he said.
"Tara?" Opie asked.
"She hasn't been back to the house," Jax said. "She doesn't feel safe after she saw Half Sack die and Cameron was pointing a gun at her face and..."
Opie couldn't help the grunt that came out of him.
"What?" Jax said.
"Nothing," Opie said. He didn't want to possibly get into an arguement right now. He grabbed Jax's bag. "We should get going."
"Just fucking say it. You know I'm probably thinking it anyway." Jax said angrily. He leaned on the wall for support.
Opie dumped the bag on the bed with force. He liked Tara long ago. He was glad Jax had gotten her back because he knew how much Jax loved her. Not every woman could be Gemma Teller Morrow, the Queen of SAMCRO. He had never held it against Tara before that she wasn’t like her.
"She should be here," Opie said. "You shouldn't be alone."
"Yeah," Jax said. "I really don't want to be alone either."
Opie didn't think he'd seen this defeated look on Jax's face since his dad died. Opie would have been here everyday in this house if he'd known Tara was gone.
"I hope maybe she just needs time. It's a lot to take in you know," Jax said.
Opie just frowned. Jax looked over at him and laughed without humor.
"Just say it," Jax said.
"It's not my business."
"Well, I say it is your business," Jax challenged.
Opie cocked his head to the side at Jax's implication. It was his business as his best friend? As his brother? They stared at each other daring the other to break down. Opie gave in first.
"What kind of woman leaves her man when he needs her most? That's not the kind of shit you do to the person you love." Opie said with anger. "She's been walking around town acting like your old lady and then suddenly she just takes off on you when your son's been kidnapped?"
"She had a gun pointed at her face," Jax said, but there wasn't much conviction behind his defence. "It's only been a few days."
"I don't fucking care," Opie hollered. "How many times have we looked down the barrell of a gun? How many times has your mom? Do you think she'd ever walk out on her family? If she finds out about Abel you bet your ass she’d risk Life in Prison to come back here if she thought you needed her."
"Fuck!" Jax yelled and punched his elbow into the wall behind him. It dented with a crack and Jax turned around and punched a hole straight through it with his hand.
Opie went grabbed his arms and turned Jax towards him.
"Jax, I'm sorry, bro," Opie said trying to calm him down. "I'm here for you, man. We're going to work this out."
Jax grabbed Opie's arms painfully, digging his fingers into the leather.
"Promise?" Jax said. There was a hint of desperation in his eyes, and Opie didn't want to make promises he couldn't keep. So he gave Jax the only thing he could.
"I promise I'm here for you, Jax. I'm not going to leave you alone if you need me."
Jax embraced him so hard, Opie had a little trouble breathing, but he stayed quiet and held Jax as he calmed down. He ran his hands through Jax's hair soothingly. Then suddenly he felt Jax's lips on the side of his neck. He felt Jax's breathe and a small almost kiss. Opie didn't retreat merely continued to stroke Jax's hair.
Jax's face came around then and kissed his mouth hard. All the tentative softness of their first two kisses was gone. It wasn't a few seconds before Opie felt Jax's tongue at his lips and Opie opened to him. Cigarettes and liqour; something so familiar for it being the first real taste of each other.
Jax moved Opie around until his back hit the wall, pinning Opie to it. He raised his hands to cup the man's face and turn it to a better angle. Opie laid his hands on Jax's waist in response.
Then Jax stopped, the initial emotions clouding his mind abated slowly. He pulled back slightly and breathed in deep.
"What are we doing, man?" he said.
"Are we talking about this now?" Opie whispered.
Jax kissed him again long and deep before pulling away from Opie completely and stepping back a few paces.
"I love Tara. I want to marry her, and have more kids," Jax said. He ran a hand through his hair.
Opie nodded.
"This," Jax said signaling between them. "I don't know what the fuck is going on. We're not even in prison to use that excuse."
"I don't know what to tell you man," Opie said. "I didn't do this in prison. It was just me and the old hand."
"I mean, I'm half hard already," Jax whispered ignoring Opie's previous comment.
"Me too," Opie said.
"You wanna marry Lyla?" Jax said.
"No," Opie said. "Maybe in the future I might feel that way, love her and marry her but... I'm still not over Donna."
Jax nodded.
"This doesn't have to be anything," Opie said. "We don't even have to talk about it. We can just go now and meet Chibs."
Opie walked over to the bed where Jax was standing. He went to pick up the bag on the bed.
"Opie," Jax said. He laid a hand on the bag over Opie's. "Thank you for being here for me."
"Anytime, brother," Opie said and nodded. He laid a hand on Jax's shoulder and gave him a firm squeeze.
Jax laid a hand on Opie's opposite shoulder. So slow they couldn't have said who started pulling, they pulled each other closer and kissed again. It started off slow this time, but escalated quickly until they were hugging each other tight, tongues dancing across each other, exploring each others mouths.
Jax ground his half-hard cock into Opie's thigh and Opie moved his hand to Jax's ass and squeezed.
Jax started laughing slightly and pulled away.
"Doesn't have to be anything?" Jax said.
"It can wait," Opie said. "How about that? We got bigger shit to fry right now."
"Chibs is outside?" Jax asked.
"Yeah, probably pissed for waiting so long," Opie said.
Jax grabbed his bag and slung it over his shoulder.
"I think we need to cool down for a couple of minutes before we go out there."
Jax grabbed his wallet and keys. It was hard for him to believe how much he had let this thing between Opie and himself escalate. It didn't have to be anything, Opie was right, but Jax felt this level of comfort with Opie he didn't want to lose.
When they got outside Chibs was waiting for them on his bike. Maybe he'd spend to much time alone in prison, Opie thought, that kissing Jax suddenly wouldn't be as weird as it should be.
"Follow me," Chibs said and drove off. Jax and Opie shared a look with each other as the revved up their bikes. For all Lyla's comfort and care, it would be a long time before she got into Opie's heart the way that Donna had, and Jax was already there.
Opie gave him a small understanding smile which Jax mirrored. Then they looked out to the open road and sped off after Chibs.
Author's Note: As of now I'm not sure what more there might be to this. I imagine that when the new season starts I'll write more because knowing me I'll start seeing gay undertones to everything.
