Chapter 3
Chapter 3
She didn’t know how long she cried but it felt like forever. Once the tears stopped, she washed her face so Davis wouldn’t know and turned off the water. Once back in the room she laid back down in the bed turning away from Davis. ~Alter Bridge song ends~
“What took so long?” Davis worried voice asked from across the bed.
“Nothing, just felt like washing my face after I took the pills and wanted the headache to pass a bit before I came back to bed.”
“Oh, okay.” And with that he rolled over and went to bed.
“You aren’t sleeping with him but you feel like an unfaithful wife or…an unfaithful friend. What the hell is going on with you Chloe girl?” Chloe asked herself as she closed her eyes hoping to any greater power that her dream wouldn’t make a reappearance but knowing if it hadn’t gone away since she pushed Clark away that day and run with Davis hoping wasn’t going to help one bit. But she’d tried. If for just a moment’s reprieve, she’d hope.
Back in Smallville…
~ Keith Urban’s Tonight I Wanna Cry starts~
Clark awoke in a cold sweat for the 30 millionth time it seemed since Chloe had left with Davis from a disturbing and confusing dream. He tried everything he could to forget the dream during the days but late at night it would haunt him with a vengeance. This made him try harder and harder to focus all his energies on finding Chloe, the farm, his job at the Daily Planet but especially his Red and Blue Blur duties. As he arose from his bed knowing now that he was awake he wasn’t going to sleep anymore today he got ready for his day.
As he went about his morning routine of getting washed, dressed, taking care of Shelby who for an old dog was moving around fairly well if maybe a little slower than before but that was to be expected, checking on the all the animals at a human speed as not to scare them and finally getting some homemade breakfast ready for himself he blocked the dream out fairly well, but as he sat down to eat before he left for the Planet images from his dream kept flashing in front of his eyes.
“Clark was walking through the destruction Doomsday had caused in mere moments searching frantically for people he could help. He was beaten and barely standing, but people were looking to him to stop this monster. To save them. So many had been lost already. The Justice League, Lois, Pete, his mom, Jimmy, thousands of y people he didn’t even know. They all were counting on him. He could still see the face of a little blond haired, green eyed boy who was barely breathing, his body having been crushed by the ruble he lay under saying as he died in Clark’s arms, “Are you going to save us from the monster, mister?”
He had been close to stopping Doomsday for good, but just couldn’t make the killing blow. Doomsday wasn’t just Doomsday, he was Davis Bloom. An innocent man lost in a world that wouldn’t accept the truth if they knew it. Their truth…Davis’ truth…his truth. They were Kryptonian, both sent to Earth for their destinies. One sent to save, one to destroy. He knew their destiny was to fight to the death but he had always believed people made their own destinies, that heroes don’t kill they save. But looking around him he wondered if for once he was wrong on that account.
Just as he was about to stop for a rest he heard a voice that he thought gone with the others close to him. It was faint, but he could hear it as clear as day. He could always hear her voice even in a war or storm he would hear her he was sure. He heard Chloe calling for him.
“Clark…I need you…” and with that he was off searching for her with the last of his super speed.
When he did find her he felt the last of his will and strength leave him. There on the ground in front of the destroyed ruins of the Daily Planet building and its burnt globe laying crushed on the street was Chloe. He ran to her side and picked her up into his arms, but he didn’t rush her to help like he might have once before. He knew he couldn’t even risk moving her more than he had to put her head on his lap or she would die instantly. From the look of it she wasn’t going to make it much longer anyways. He felt the tears rolling down his face and didn’t care. Chloe…his friend, his confidante, his strength, what made him the hero he was… was dying in his arms.
“Chloe.”
“Hey Super Boy. Looks like we didn’t win this one, but we’ll get ‘em next time.” Chloe tried to joke through the blood gathering in her lungs and her coughing fits.
“Yeah next time. Chloe, you can’t leave me, you know. I won’t let you.” Clark tried to say while struggling to breathe through gathering tears.
“We don’t have a choice in this one, Clark. But know I’ll always be with you and… love you. I’ve always been proud of you, Clark. And no matter what happens I always will be.” She gasped out as she touched his cheek with her soft pale hand.
Clark brought her closer to him and kissed her lips softly as she took her last breath drawing it into himself and when she went still he just held her close to his heart, crying. As her arm fell away from his face he felt something cold swipe his arm and looked down at Chloe’s wrist thinking it was one of her many bracelets. It was a bracelet but not any bracelet he ever thought to see Chloe wearing, it was his destined soul mate’s bracelet.
“What…What’s going on!?” he thought out loud.
He wasn’t expecting anyone to comment so when he heard a strong but definitely female voice say, “Can’t you tell?” behind him he swung around protecting Chloe’s body from the possible threat if that was what the voice was.
When he was facing the person behind him he could see a young woman in her late teens, early twenties standing in the middle of all the destruction as if it didn’t even exist. She was Chloe’s height and had her fair complexion but had long dark brown hair and piercing green-hazel eyes. She wore tight dark blue jeans, a purple Cap Solid Scoop Neck with Criss Cross Body T and high heeled leather ankle boots. He could also see some kind of jewelry on one wrist and her ring finger, but couldn’t tell what they were.
“Who are you?! Why are you here?” Clark yelled at the girl.
She didn’t even flinch at his tone just kept eyeing him down. Then she took a breath and said, “You tell me…Dad?”
This is the moment he would usually wake in a cold sweat from his sleep. But it wasn’t the destruction or the girl that haunted him during the day; it was Chloe and the bracelet she wore.
Just as his remembrance was getting to Chloe once again he heard his phone going off. It was Lois’s ringtone.
“Yes, Lois?” Clark asked tired of everything but especially Lois at the moment.
“Oh, good you’re up Smallville.”
“I’m always up at this time, Lois. I have a farm to look after. Remember? You did live here for a while.”
“Oh, yes, yes I remember sorry. I was just wondering if you were on your way into Metropolis yet.”
“Why? What do you want?” Clark asked starting to get frustrated.
“I need you to get my morning coffee all the interns are off doing other things and I need my morning coffee to get going or I won’t be any good at getting news worthy stories today.”
“Why can’t you get it? I know you don’t have a story yet. Your just sitting there waiting for me to show up so you can degrade my writing some more,” Clark said irritably.
“Whoa Smallville! What got up your ass?”
“Sorry Lois, just haven’t been sleeping well.”
“Oh, okay. Well if you don’t want to get my coffee that’s ok.”
“No, no it’s okay. I was just leaving now. I’ll make a coffee stop. Can you wait until I get there for it?”
“Yeah, sure Clark.”
“Okay, be there as soon as I get there.”
He checked on Shelby, the animals and boundary lines of the farm one more time and set off in his old red truck towards Metropolis, much needed coffee and his job at the Daily Planet. Hoping maybe today they might find something to say where Chloe and Davis were hiding. Hoping maybe all the hustle and bustle of the Daily Planet and all his RBB duties would keep thoughts of his dream at bay for just a bit longer.
~Song ends~
