Claire had finally stopped crying by the time she arrived at Hampton Court. The black carriage rolled to a stop jarring her slightly. She leaned out the window and stared up at the enormous red bricked palace that was now her new home. Taking a deep breath Claire composed herself as a servant opened the door to the carriage offering her his hand as she climbed out. Before she could even speak there were more attendants taking her luggage off the top of the carriage. She supposed they were taking it to her personal chambers…wherever that might be. A young servant boy of about twelve approached her.

“Is that everything Miss?”

“Oh…um yes thank you.”

“No thanks needed Miss…just doing my job.”

With that he took off in the direction of her luggage before she could ask him where they were taking her things. Claire looked around at the perfectly manicured estate drinking in the large green hedge maze that sprawled on for acres. She could hear the gentle running water of the fountains that were somewhere close by. Wanting to find them she began wandering the grounds of the palace aimlessly. Claire was so caught up in taking in all the sights around her that she wasn’t watching where she was going. She gave a surprised yelp when she collided with something firm yet soft at the same time.

“Oh!”

Claire stumbled back a few steps as she started tumbling towards the ground. A hand caught her wrist stopping her from falling. Then another hand grasped her other wrist pulling her back to her feet carefully. Smoothing out the wrinkles in her sage green dress she looked up to see the face of a very handsome young man that looked to be in his early twenties. He had dark hair and piercing blue eyes that seemed to look right through her dress as if she were standing there stark naked. His voice was smooth as silk but raw and powerful at the same time.

“Are you hurt Miss?”

“Oh…um no…thank you sir.”

He chuckled and so did two other men. Glancing up again she now noticed that he was flanked by a young man on each side. On his left side was a young man with dark brown hair and dark chocolate brown eyes. He smiled at her when he caught her staring at him. Smiling back she quickly averted her gaze to the gentleman on his right side. He had light brown hair and a light shadow of light brown stubble dusting his handsome face. His eyes were also a soft chocolate brown. The young man that she had bumped into spoke up again breaking her thoughts.

“Do you not know who I am?”

“Forgive me sir…but no I’m afraid I don’t.”

“Well then…I suppose an introduction is necessary. I’m Henry Tudor, King of England. And you are?”

Her blue eyes widened in shock as she looked him over once more not knowing how she didn’t know who he was. Then snapping out of her stupor she fell on her knees on the cobblestone pathway and bowed to him.

“I’m sorry your grace…I had no idea. I meant no disrespect.”

“No harm done…now then…do you have a name?”

“Yes…it’s Lady Claire Selwyn of Avonlea your grace.”

“Claire Selwyn of Avonlea? What a pretty name.”

“Thank you your grace.”

“A pretty name for an equally pretty young lady.”

“Once again…thank you your grace.”

“There is no need to kneel Claire…may I call you Claire?”

“If it pleases your grace?”

“It does.”

“Then yes your grace.”

“Forgive my manners…let me introduce you to two of my closest friends. “This is Lord Benjamin Penney of Ingleside.”

“A pleasure to meet you Lady Claire.”

“Yes a pleasure Lord Penney.”

“Call me Benjamin.”

“Only if you will call me Claire?”

“Then I shall, Claire.”

“Agreed Benjamin.”

Benjamin took her hand in his and raised it to his mouth placing a gentle kiss on the back of her hand. Her cheeks reddened slightly as he let go of her hand. Henry’s commandingly silken voice interrupted the moment between the two.

“And this is Charles Brandon, Duke of Suffolk.”

“Hello Lady Claire, a pleasure.”

“Yes a pleasure, Duke Brandon.”

“Oh no…please call me Charles.”

“Then you will have to call me Claire.”

“Agreed then Claire.”

“Very well Charles it is.”

Charles also took her hand bringing it up to his mouth to place a soft kiss on her knuckles. He flashed her a broad grin as he noticed her cheeks turn a bright pink. Claire smiled back at him as he let go of her hand allowing her to draw it back to her side. Henry seeing the sparks between Charles and Claire as they started to ignite decided to disrupt the magical moment.

“So tell me Claire…what business do you have in Hampton Court?”

“I was assigned as one of Queen Katherine’s ladies in waiting your grace.”

“Ah yes…seeing as how one of my wife’s ladies in waiting recently married and is expecting a child of her own…I expected a new addition to be arriving soon. Have you been introduced to my wife and her other ladies in waiting yet?”

“No your grace.”

“Then let me escort you to her personal chambers so that a proper introduction can be carried out.”

“Your grace is very kind.”

“I only treat those around me how I would wish them to treat me Claire.”

Turning to Benjamin and Charles he flashed them an impish grin before resuming his cool and collected demeanor as he addressed them in front of Claire.

“Charles, Benjamin…head off to the stables for our afternoon ride…I’ll be along shortly. Now then shall we Claire?”

“We shall your grace.”

Henry offered his arm to Claire and she took it quickly. He led her down the cobblestone walkway towards Hampton Court. Claire couldn’t help but notice the way everyone was watching them as they walked towards the palace. She got the feeling that they were just waiting for her to make some sort of mistake so that they would have something to gossip about later on at whatever banquet was obviously being prepared for now. Walking through the main hall of the palace Claire felt an overabundance of eyes following her as she walked with Henry. Perhaps it had not been the wisest of decisions to let the King himself escort her to the Queen’s personal chambers. She suddenly felt as if she were on display. Feeling a pair of eyes practically burning into her skin through the fabric of her dress she glanced to her right. Claire caught sight of a silver haired man dressed in black and dark blue with a black hat and matching blue feather in it watching her intently. Next to him stood a younger man with dark brown hair that favored him greatly. She guessed they were related somehow. Flashing them a brief smile it quickly melted when she noticed they didn’t return it. The older man leaned over to whisper something to the younger man. That gave her a rather uneasy feeling. After they had gotten a ways down the hall Thomas Boleyn raised his voice a bit as he talked with his son George.

“Who was that young woman with the King?”

“I don’t know father…I’ve never seen her before. She’s very pretty though.”

Thomas elbowed his son firmly in the ribs knocking the wind out of him a bit.

“That doesn’t help our case George! We can’t afford to have pretty young maidens around to tempt Henry’s attention away from your sister Mary! Now I want to know who she is and what she’s doing here!”

“I could find out…perhaps Mary and Anne will know something?”

“See to it that you do…I won’t have some whore ruining all the hard work that I’ve accomplished thus far. Understood?”

“Yes father.”

Thomas dismissed George quickly to go and find out just who this new mystery maiden was and what her intentions were concerning the King. He had already sacrificed his youngest daughter Mary’s marriage to a fine young gentleman in the hopes of gaining more favor with Henry. And he would not give up now that he had his foot nearly in the door.

A/N: Okay so Thomas Boleyn has no idea that his daughter with Elizabeth Selwyn has arrived in court. Right now he just sees her as some random maiden who poses a threat to his daughter’s fight for Henry’s affections. Please read and review!
