Chapter Two

Chapter Two

Dominic had pushed his jet ranger as fast as he could to get to String’s cabin at Eagle Lake. He had received a call from Archangel saying that Hawke would need him. He had already seen the white helicopter from the FIRM just leave the dock outside Hawke’s cabin. Maybe this was news on Saint John? Dominic was hopeful at the prospect of this but also a small bit of reality hit home. His ‘baby’ would have to go back to the FIRM. How selfish am I being, Dominic thought as he quickly made his way up to the cabin.

Hawke had already poured a glass of wine for his friend and stood behind the counter. In front of Hawke was a brown leather file neatly placed by the FIRMS assistant that had just left the cabin. Hawke had not touched it.

Dominic sat on a bar stool and looked at the file. “Is it Saint John?” He asked.

Hawke shook his head and downed the glass of wine in one go. “Nah, its Kristie.”

Dominic knew String well enough that he wouldn’t pick up the file and read it without having all the ghosts rise up and consume his young tortured friend first.

“May I?” Dominic asked pointing to the file.

Hawke nodded and refilled the glass and taking the bottle with him. He walked over to the hearth and sat on the stone step looking down at Tet who was sound asleep.

Dominic opened up the file, put on his glasses and began to read out aloud.

“Kristien, first daughter of the Ruler of Dubawi Sheik Malik Faruq Hamdan and The Duchess of Burghley Sarah Naylor-Leyland, born in the United States when on a State visit, Kristien was born. Kristien was two months early. From the US then went to the UK where Kristien was left with the family butler, Alfred.” Dominic paused and looked up. “Hey String why do you think she never went back to Dubawi with her parents then?”

Hawke looked at Dom at the same time he finished the bottle of wine. “Seems strange doesn’t it.” Hawke walked over to behind the bar and took out a very rare crystal bottle of a one hundred and fifty year old cognac, over seventy percent proof which he had bought for the special occasion such as the birth of his first child but the urge to drink something stronger was too much. As he opened up the bottle and allowed the aroma fill the room he thought a little about it. “Maybe it something to do with that she’s a woman?” He remembered something when he went to Libya, there seemed to be only men about and women had little purpose, other than to serve man. Probably why Moffet felt so at home there.

“Could be.” Dominic nodded and held out his hand to receive the cognac from String. The unmistakable wooded aromas of the vintage cognac filled the cabin, Dominic was quite surprised that his young friend had opened the rare cognac. He had seen the rare bottle many times behind the bar but knew it would be for a very very special occasion, however, this occasion called for a huge drowning of the ghosts of the past that were already rising to the surface.

Hawke resumed his place at the hearth and filled the cognac glass to half. Dominic noticed the amount as Hawke swallowed a large mouthful of the cognac. Best I get to the end of the file before he gets half cut Dominic thought.

“Being gifted at an early age she was being tutored by Cambridge Professors.” Dominic took a mouthful of cognac as he himself read ahead. “At age 8 whilst on a visit to Dubawi her parents were murdered in front of her and her brother was castrated. Archangel led the assault on the Palace to stop the coup and brought Kristien back. Her brother remains the Ruler to this day.”

Hawke looked painfully out of the window to the lake where he and his parents had a boating accident. They had died in front of him at age twelve. He remembered it like it happened yesterday. The pain rose to the surface and he took another gulp of cognac.

Dominic saw that Hawke had nearly emptied the cognac glass and hurriedly read ahead. He decided to miss out the teenage years altogether as that would take another cognac glassful and at over seventy percent proof Hawke would be on the floor soon.

“Archangel got her on the Airwolf project.” Dominic raised his eyebrow. “She taught you to fly the lady?” Dominic knew the two had met at the FIRM but that’s all he knew. Dominic skipped ahead as Hawke allowed his cognac glass to be filled once more.

“It says here that when she was taken from the cabin a team of 30 soldiers. Kristien went into labour shortly after being taken.” Dominic took a huge swallow of the brown liquid himself not wanting to read out aloud what was in front of him. “They performed a caesarean and Kristien was very ill.”

Hawke took a huge mouthful. “And our son?” Hawke asked half knowing the answer.

Dominic shook his head. “No mention of him here.”

Dominic continued. “A couple of days later Special Agent Matthew Carsten of the Secret Service was checking the security at JFK for the President to send off the Prince of Kuwait after a state visit, when he saw Kristien being taken on to the plane.” Dominic just pieced a couple of things together. “Hey String, do you remember that 747 blowing up on the runway? This was it. You know they had a right scare there what with the President there as well.” Dominic remembered that incident well. Any aircraft exploding or crashing always got his attention. He was just about to launch into one of his famous stories from the old days but as the cognac was draining quicker than a sieve with water, he decided against it.

Hawke remembered and had another mouthful.

Dominic glanced over at String and saw the cognac bottle half empty already. “Oh.” Dominic found his place again. “Kristien remained in intensive care for over 3 months due to infection and severe blood loss. She returned to England where the Secret Service were assigned to her for her protection. It says that she took over 12 months to get well again.”

Hawke knocked back another mouthful. That was probably why she hadn’t contacted him before, he mused to himself. But it still didn’t explain why he could feel that she was alive but not know where she was or what she was feeling on a day to day basis, such had their bond been before.

“Hey String, it says here that she is in imminent danger hence all the security and stuff.” Dominic read out to String who was feeling much better after drowning the sorrows that had risen to the surface. “And that she will repair Airwolf.”

Hawke looked directly at Dominic. “She will?” Hawke paused. “When?” He put down the cognac glass.

“Archangel just has a note here to contact him and that Kristien has her own hangar at her secure place.” Dominic was really pleased to read that! He had had enough of flying Airwolf cold! About time that someone who knew computers looked at her and someone that Hawke would trust.

“Best we make the arrangements and tell Michael we don’t want to see him there either. I don’t want the FIRM anywhere near the lady.” Hawke told Dominic.

“Okay String.” Dominic went over to behind the bar to get the white satellite phone to call up Archangel.

“And Dom.” Hawke held his head which had started to pound.

“Yeah?” Dom replied.

“Better put the coffee on.” Hawke continued to hold onto his head as he felt the cognac drown out the sorrows of the loss of his baby. “And make it strong.” Hawke replaced the cork that was dangling by its leather thong from the bottle. Damn that was a great cognac and such a shame that he had wasted it.
