Memories of Nobody

~Memory~

In The Past

A lone figure stood upon a dais in the middle of a large, oval shaped room. Dressed in an expensive, dark blue suit, and a case clasped in his right hand. He shifted under the scrutizing gaze of several of his superiors, all of them military types, and all of them impatient for the results. A man who was decidely larger than the rest, stood up and crossed his arms.

“Dr. Eckels, please proceed to tell us how the experiment with River Tam and Aydrian Stark is working out.” He said and Eckels nodded. He opened up the case and pulled out a sheet of paper.

“Several months ago, we got two very promising additions to the project, both of them named Aydrian and River. The two seemed to grow an attachment to each other long before our experiments ever began, and they would constantly find ways to sneak away to meet. Although we’re not certain, we think they might have met in the ventilation system.”

He placed the paper on a projector, which glowed and two holographic images of the said students appeared in the middle of the chamber.

“They seemed to show a peculiar bond with each other, one that we’ve attempted to exploit. Due to your orders, we proceeded with the M-Twin Project. The results were unpredictable. Planting a connection between two separate people that allows them to communicate on an emotional level left them barely able to think, let alone do the fighting simulatons.”

He pressed a button on the projector and it showed two videos side by side of the two subjects huddling in corners, and violently attacking anyone who gets near them.

“We lost eight Doctors before we were able to fix the problem. For experimentation, we put them in room right next to each other, with an unbreakable window in between them.”

He pressed another button and it showed the subjects looking through the window at each other, seeming to communicate without actually speaking. After several minutes Aydrian presses the palm of his hand against the window, and then River does the same. Almost instantly, both of them shudder and lean heavily against the window.

“Our censors indicated total body stimulation, but not in the way a body is normally stimulated. With half an inch of glass between them, it was the equivalent of absolute bliss. From that moment on, it became clear that the two would only function with the other present. We tried our best to limit any physical contact, because we simply didn’t know what would happen. But in the simulations...”

He pressed the projector again and it showed the two subjects in the middle of combat. The two worked like a single mind together, the fluidity of their moves, and the efficiency they took down one person after another caused the people in the room to mutter amongst themselves.

“Every simulation we ran, they beat it well below every current record in our library. It was fascinating to watch, but as a precaution we also put them through another simulation, the new one being this very facility. The results show that if they wanted to, together they could escape this facility with little trouble.”

That made them look at each other with a bit of concern, but they said nothing.

“Outside of the simulations, we’ve kept them apart, but this has proven to be a mistake. They can barely function without each other, and become very violent when you try to keep them apart for more then a few days. My expertise suggests that although the project has worked properly, it does have that major flaw. They have to be with each other at all times.”

He pressed a button again and it shows the two subjects in a room together, both of them just standing a few feet apart.

“As the final part of the experiment, we put them together in the same room. We expected all kinds of things, including intimate contact and sex. We put them together knowing those things could happen. But...”

He speeds up the video and a few hours passed, but they didn’t move from their original positions. They just stared at each other, unblinking, unmoving, not doing a single thing, and then suddenly, the video flashes once and shows the two laying on a bed.

“What you see here is utterly baffling. One second they’re standing, the next they are sleeping together on the bed. Although we have no idea how they did it, upon analysis of the video, they somehow interrupted the video feed for three hours. We have no idea what happened during that time period.”

He pressed a button and the hologram disappeared. It started even more murmering amongst the superiors.

“We are still contuing the project, but I must warn you that we are doing something that has never been done before. There is significant risk, and these two are developing in ways we never could have predicted.”

As the superiors left the room, talking amongst themselves, Eckels sighed and left as well. For some reason, he had a bad feeling about all of this.

~Author's Note~

I know a promised a Mal/Inara chapter, but the idea to write this part earlier than I intended suddenly gave me a swift kick in the balls and I couldn't resist it. This chapter explains how River and Aydrian are connected to each other. But in this chapter it also explains that they can't be away from each other for very long, so how come they've been apart this long? And how come River doesn't seem to remember him? All of these things will be explained in due time.
