Chapter Two
It felt as though something deep inside me shifted and a stinging pain filled my legs. My knees bent as if by instinct and my body catapulted over the car as if I had just grown wings. I landed on my feet and could hear the car’s breaks squealing madly on the pavement and I heard Clark cry out.
What just happened?
How did I do what I just did?
The sound of the crash assaulted my ears and the splash was louder than what words could describe. He was dead. Clark was dead…and it was my fault.
I spun around to see the shredded railing and ran over to fall on my knees at the ledge.
“Clark,” I screamed as I gazed down at the churning green water, terrified that I was going to see his floating corpse, “Clark!”
I couldn’t see a damn thing. What the hell was I supposed to do? I didn’t know how to swim.
“Clark,” I screamed and then screamed again when I saw my hands.
They looked like razor sharp talons that were the color of platinum. I held them out and felt a sharp pain ripple through my stomach and something burning on my breast. My mouth even felt like it was on fire. There was something wrong with my teeth.
What the hell was happening to me?
“Clark,” I cried out again but my voice was different. It was deeper…scarier.
I heard a splash and gazed down to see that he was alright. There was someone in his arms. How the hell had he survived that? The car had to of hit him…or did he jump in to save that man?
The pain rippled through my body once more and I fell over on my side almost in tears. What the hell was happening to me?
“Darrian,” Clark yelled up, “Are you okay?”
I couldn’t answer him right away. I was terrified that my voice would sound like that of a demon. Had he seen me jump over that car? If so, I don’t know what the hell I’m going to do.
“Darrian,” Clark yelled, “Answer me, please!”
“I’m fine,” I called out and suddenly all the pain was gone.
What the fuck?
I looked at my hands to see that they were their normal creamy pale selves. I quickly checked my teeth to see that they felt normal too.
Wait!
My hands…my hands were healed. There was not any evidence that they had ever had glass in them.
I crawled to my knees and over to the ledge to see that Clark was giving someone CPR…or whatever it is called. It was that thing that hero dudes give people in the movies when someone was not breathing.
I got to my feet and looked around for the quickest way down to him.
“Are you all right,” I asked running down that bank towards him, being careful not to trip and fall flat on my face.
“I’m fine,” Clark said as the young man looked to be breathing but a little dazed, “He missed me.”
“Are you sure,” the young man asked, “I could of sworn I just hit you.”
“If you had,” Clark whispered as I followed his gaze back up at the railing, “I’d be dead…”
The way those green eyes were looking at me made me feel really uncomfortable. He had seen me jump over that car.
“And you,” the young, bald man said, “Did you jump over my car?”
“No,” I quickly lied and looked to Clark, “I’m not Jackie Chan.”
The young man shook his head, “I could of sworn…”
“You need to relax,” Clark said making him lie back down, “There is a farm just up the road…I’ll be right back.”
“I’ll stay with him,” I said and those green eyes were still looking at me as though I had grown horns…and I probably did.
He nodded and took off running up the bank. I watched him until he was out of sight and turned to look back at the handsome bald man.
“What’s your name,” he asked as he squinted up at me because of the bright sun.
“Darrian,” I told him, “What’s yours?”
“Alexander,” he said and then frowned, “Lex…Lex Luthor.”
“Well, Lex…Lex Luthor,” I said, “You really shouldn’t drive so fast. You never can tell when something crazy might just pop out of no where.”
He gave me a weak smile and closed his eyes. That bruise that was starting to form on his forehead was going to hurt like a mother later on.
“Hey,” Clark called as he ran back down the bank, “Help is on the way.”
“That was fast,” I said as he knelt down next to me to look me over, “What are you doing?”
“Making sure that you’re really okay,” he said and his eyes looked as though they were piercing right through me. What did this guy have…x-ray vision?
“I don’t know what happened,” I whispered and he must of seen the fear in my eyes because his softened incredibly, “Can we please…just keep it between us.”
He pushed my hair behind my ears and nodded, “Okay…but are you sure you’re okay?”
“I’m fine,” I said gazing back down Lex and shivered at the memory of Clark’s hands touching me so softly, “A little freaked out…and terrified that you had been killed.”
“I’m fine,” he said holding out his arms, “As you can see.”
I nodded and suddenly he had my hands in his again. Shit!
“Your bandages,” he said and his eyes were really big, “And your hands…”
“They’re fine,” I said getting really tired of saying that, “Everything is fine…we’re fine…Lex Luthor here is fine…we’re all just fine.”
Was that last bit said with a country twang? Goodness gracious, I do declare Mr. Beauregard, my little southern bell has come out to play.
Clark looked really amused…but there was something hidden deep in his eyes. He looked like he was about to explode from the inside out with some kind of emotion he had been holding back for years.
How in the hell did I know this? What in the hell am I? If mommy was only alive right now, she’d have some serious explaining to do.
I could hear sirens in the distance and Clark got to his feet. What in the world was he going to tell them?
“Hey,” I said getting up with him and he looked at me, which had me blushing, “I wanted to say that I’m sorry.”
“For what,” he asked.
“For,” I said gesturing around at the destruction, “For this.”
“It wasn’t your fault,” he said, “There was a big pipe on the road that his car hit…which sent him straight at…the two of us.”
“Good thing we jumped out of the way,” I said with a nervous chuckle and that was when his eyes looked like they were on fire.
He was suddenly right in my personal space. My breath caught in my throat when his warm breath tickled my left ear.
“Can we talk later?”
I must of blinked several times before whispering, “Okay.”
“Down there,” a voice shouted from above and I saw two officers coming down the bank…followed by a very frantic looking man who was dressed in plaid…like Clark.
“Clark,” the man yelled, “Are you all right?”
“I’m fine, dad,” he said turning to look back at Lex who was trying to set up.
“Thank goodness,” he said throwing his arms around him, “I was with Ethan when the call came in.”
“Hey,” I said helping Lex up, “You should really take it easy.”
“I’m fine,” he lied, “Its going to take more than a little fender bender to stop Lex Luthor.”
“Luthor,” Clark’s dad asked and his voice was suddenly very scary, “What were you doing running over my kid and his friend?”
Lex blanched and stumbled a little, “A pipe was in the road…and I lost control of my car.”
Clark’s dad narrowed his eyes to cold slits and Lex continued, “Your son, he saved my life. How can I ever repay you?”
“Don’t drive so fast,” he said and turned to walk away with Lex right behind him. The two of them went to talk to the police.
“Come with me and my dad,” Clark said as I followed beside him, “I can drive you home later.”
I nodded my head. Why was I not freaking the fuck out right now? Any normal person would be flipping the fuck out. Oh, wait a damn minute…I’m not normal. Step Daddy Dearest and his offspring always said so.
I got in the truck first. Why did I have to ride bitch? I felt so small being in the middle of the two bigger men.
Clark’s dad looked like he was about to start spitting fire at any minute but he did smile at me…so that was a good thing. I felt like I was in the way of a very important family discussion.
“Clark,” his dad asked, “Why don’t you introduce me to your new friend?”
“Oh,” Clark said as he rolled his window down and the wind blew through his shaggy black hair, “This is Darrian White. He just started school today.”
“Nice to meet you,” he said turning his head to smile at me, “I’m Jonathan Kent.”
“Same here,” I said with a polite smile and tone, “Only as Clark said, my name is Darrian.”
There was something about Mr. Kent’s tone that scared me. It was like he was really wanting to say, “Why is this strange boy in my truck with me and my son? My boy was just almost killed…and there is a stranger among us. Lex Luthor must die.”
Wait!
Was I hearing his thoughts?
I shook my head.
“Don’t be an idiot,” I hissed to myself.
“I’m going to give Darrian a ride home later,” Clark said which had his dad looking past me, “I want to hang out and get to know him better.”
“What did he see,” Mr. Kent asked.
What the fuck? His lips had not moved. I’m losing my damn mind.
“Does he know about my sons powers,” his worried voice echoed in my head.
Oh, shit.
I think I need to see a therapist. I’m hearing voices now. Did my mom have crazy running through her genes? Was it my dad?
I turned to look at Clark who was looking out his window. Mr. Kent’s voice was loud and roaring in my head…but Clark…his voice was silent.
Yep…I’ve lost my damn mind.
Pretty soon I’ll be just like Carol Burnett in Annie, singing with all the nuts and squirrels.
Fun, fun, fun.
Powers?
My head was throbbing.
Mr. Kent needed to simmer down.
