The days went by slowly. Dean and Sam had gone that weekend to a restaurant for turkey and stuffing and the works. Sam was doing everything possible to treat his brother with the utmost care after the call from his dad the other night. Sam turned to Dean now, watching him concentrate on driving, his mind drifting back to the conversation.
-------------------------------
"Dad?!?"
"Sam...where's Dean? I need to talk to him."
"He's asleep. He was hurt and he's sleeping it off pretty deeply. I tried to wake him when the phone rang, but he didn't answer. I'm guessing he had some pain pills or something."
"He would have had to be in a tremendous amount of pain to use them. What the hell happened?"
Sam shamefully told his father what had happened. When he was done he just waited, expecting to be yelled at. Instead he heard a sigh on the other end of the line.
"Sam, this isn't good."
"I know that. I told you that I couldn't help it, but-"
"He said the day would come, but I didn't believe it. I never thought..."
"Dad, what are you talking about? I don't understand."
"You tried to kill Dean. I mean...you pulled the trigger. Are you sure you pulled it?"
"Multiple times."
"I never warned Dean because I never thought anything on this earth would lead you to do something like that..."
"Dad, stop. Just tell me."
"I can't. That's up to Dean."
"You just said you never warned him."
"I didn't. Just tell him that something happened that will change the deal on Thursday. That's the best I can do for him."
"Why can't you tell me? Shit, dad, maybe I should just demand that he-"
"I think he's going to die."
Sam was speechless. He tried to gather his thoughts, but didn't know how.
"Sam, if you have anything unresolved between you and your brother, you're going to want to take care of it. I don't want you hunting on your own." He gave Sam the name of a hotel in the Omaha area. "Stay there and I'll meet you on Saturday."
"You said you'd only meet me if Dean didn't come back."
"I know. Just...tell him that I love him. Please do that for me."
Sam nodded, but then realized that his father couldn't see him. "Yeah, okay." Suddenly his mind snapped to attention again. "No! Wait a minute! What the hell is going on? What's happening to my brother?"
"Do you want to fuck him?"
Sam choked on air and tried to figure out what to say to that. "No! I mean...what the hell, dad! He's my brother!"
John sighed sadly. "You need to be there for him. I'll see you on Saturday. You might know everything by then."
"How? I'm not supposed to follow him, remember?" The sarcasm bled through, but he was tired of being yanked around by his own father.
"I don't think you'll have a choice now. You tried to kill him. Like I said...that changes everything. Love him well for both of us."
Sam wanted to protest, but his father had hung up. He placed the phone back on the nightstand and hadn't gotten a good night's sleep since.
----------------------------
"Is there a reason you're staring at me, Sammy?"
Sam jumped, realizing he'd been totally lost in his thoughts. He had to talk to Dean, but it was too late to do any good. "Dad called."
Dean looked at Sam with a shocked look on his face. "What? When?"
"Thanksgiving night. You were out of it."
"What did he want?"
"To talk to you before this trip. He had a message."
"And?"
"He said that something happened that will change the deal."
Dean pulled the car over to the side of the road and turned to face his brother. "Think, Sam. Exactly what did he say?"
"I told him what happened at the asylum and he was upset because I'd tried to kill you."
"Yeah, well, I can't say I'm jumping for joy about it. What does that have to do with anything?"
"He said that he said that the day would come when I'd try to kill you, but dad didn't think it would happen so he didn't...warn you."
Dean took a deep breath. "Makes sense. What else?"
"He's meeting me on Saturday."
Dean closed his eyes. "You, not us."
"He thinks you're going to die and I asked him to tell me what's going on, but he said I'd find out anyway."
Dean's eyes snapped open at that. "What? How?"
Sam shrugged. "He just said that I wouldn't have a choice. And he said that he loved you. And uh...he asked me something else."
"What?"
"He asked me if I wanted to have sex with you...I think."
Dean's eyebrow went up and so did one corner of his mouth in a smirk. "Do you?"
Sam blushed. "No, dumbass. You're my brother."
Dean nodded and his eyes seemed sad. "Yeah, Sammy. I'm your brother." He clasped the back of Sam's neck with his hand. "I love you. Okay?"
Sam felt himself tear up, but just nodded. "I love you, too, Dean. I don't want to lose you."
Dean shook his head and pulled his brother to him to hold him tight. "You won't. We fight ghosts every day, right? Just when I come back, don't exorcise me, okay?"
Sam held onto Dean as if he'd never see him again. "I promise. You've always got a person to haunt in me."
Dean smiled and kissed Sam's cheek. "Come on, spaz. We have to get going."
He calmly drove the rest of the way to Omaha thinking one thought. Maybe this means that it's finally going to end.
