Chapter Three

Ric Lansing sat at the large mahogany desk that dominated his luxurious office. Being District Attorney definitely had its perks but so far it was not as enjoyable as he had hoped.

There was a thorn in his side that just would not allow him to fully bask in his much-deserved glory. His half brother, Michael “Sonny” Corinthos Jr.’s enforcer, Jason Morgan.

Ric hated Jason Morgan with an unreasonable passion. One could say that Jason was the bane of Ric’s existence. Were it not for Morgan, Ric would have reconciled his relationships with both Sonny and Elizabeth Webber, his ex-wife and the woman he still truly loved.

Elizabeth was a blind fool when it came to Jason. All she saw was her strong, handsome hero. Not the cold-blooded assassin that he truly was. Morgan was a hired killer and from what Ric knew he was one of, if not the best in the business. Not that this was anything to be proud of but it still irked the prosecutor to have to admit even that much of Morgan’s talent.

Ric loathed the man who had the things he wanted most in life: the love and respect of his brother and his soul-mate. It was past time that Ric took Jason out of the equation. Permanently.

Audrey answered the telephone quickly, trying to avoid the sound waking Cameron.

“Mrs. Hardy? This is Jason Morgan. I wanted to call and let you know that Elizabeth is at General Hospital,” the voice on the other end of the line told her in somber tones.

“Oh my. Is she alright? The baby. Is the baby ok?” A million questions ran through the career nurse’s mind as she struggled to remain calm.

“I brought her to the ER after she lost consciousness at her studio. Dr. Lee is in with her now, but they won’t tell me anything,” said the young man with frustration.

“Thank you for calling, Mr. Morgan. I’ll be there as soon as I can find someone to watch Cameron,” she told him.

“I’ll stay right here until you arrive,” he told her.

Audrey made a quick phone call to Bobby Spencer and within just a few minutes the redhead was at her door. Bobby assured Audrey that it was no trouble at all and that she should stay at the hospital until Elizabeth and the baby were given a clean bill of health, which they both hoped would be right away.

Dr. Lee watched the tape on the fetal monitor with concern.

“How are they doing?” asked Robin Scorpio.

She and Kelly Lee were not only both doctors at the hospital, but they were also close personal friends of Elizabeth’s.

“I’m concerned about the baby’s heart rate. It is not quite as fast as I’d like it to be,” Dr. Lee responded in a typically cryptic medical way.

“No contractions though, right?” Robin asked, flipping open Elizabeth’s chart and quickly looking over the results of the first series of tests that had been run.

“None so far,” Dr. Lee said. The look she gave Robin spoke of little confidence that preterm labor might not still occur.

“Who brought her in?” Robin asked curiously.

“Jason Morgan. It looked as though he carried her all the way here. He is very worried and looks exhausted,” Kelly said.

“I’ll go give him an update. There isn’t much I can tell him, since he isn’t immediate family but at least I can try to ease his mind a little,” Robin told her colleague.

Jason sat in a chair in the waiting area of the ER. Situations like this made him feel so inadequate. For someone who was accustomed to being in complete control of every situation, waiting was not an easy thing to do.

Just as he was about to get up and pace again Robin walked up.

“Hey. I wanted to come let you know that Elizabeth and the baby are both stable at the moment,” she told her old friend.

Robin took in the disheveled appearance of the man whom she had known since she was a teenager and could not quite believe her own eyes. Jason looked like the walking dead and Robin was fairly certain that it was not all due to the evenings events.

“Are they going to be ok?” he asked in a nervous voice. His blue eyes were huge with concern and the dark circles under them only served to make him look even more worried.

“We won’t know anything for sure until we run a few more tests. I can’t really be any more specific than that, Jason. You aren’t family,” she said.

She hated to tell him this, as it sounded so cold and bureaucratic, but Federal Law mandated that patient privacy be upheld in all circumstances.

“I called her grandmother. She said she would be here as soon as she found someone to watch Cam,” he said, his eyes taking on a distant stare.

“Jason, you look tired. Why don’t you go home. I’ll call you if there is any change,” she told him, placing a hand on his shoulder and giving it a comforting squeeze.

“No. I told Mrs. Hardy that I would wait here until she arrived. I can’t go home anyway,” he said sadly.

Robin’s heart ached at the look of pain that crossed her ex’s face with that last sentence. She knew only too well the pain he was experiencing at the loss of Samantha McCall. She still got tears in her eyes every time her memories of Stone were awakened, and he had been dead for 12 years. The deaths were not even remotely similar, but for the fact that the victims were both people they had expected to live the rest of their lives with.

That kind of loss could never be fully recovered from. Jason had a long, hard road ahead of him.
