Chapter 3

Green

Flora Winters

I do not own Smallville.

Summary: Something bad is going down in the small town of Smallville and it’s all Lex’s fault. He has always been too curious for his own good. If only he had not tripped and fallen that day while snooping around the Kent farm when the elder Kent’s were out of town and Clark was at school.

Chapter 3

Clark pulled into the farm drive with the heat blasting. He honked the horn all the way to the house. Lex was muttering things about screams and explosions. He pulled up to the house with his parents running out to meet the car thinking something terrible had happened. Both were relieved and shocked to see their son get out of the drivers seat and speed around to pull Lex out into his arms.

“What’s happened,” Martha asked.

Clark was walking towards them with Lex shouting about an explosion. He looked at his parents really worried, “We were at the lake,” he said following them into the house,” We were just talking and then he just fell to the ground.”

Jonathan ran to get the door for his son and wife so Clark could bring in the semi-conscious Luthor . He really did hate the Luthor’s but he saw how concerned his son was for him so he kept his mouth shut for the time being.

Clark headed towards the bathroom so he could get Lex out of his wet clothes. He asked his mom to find something of his for Lex to wear. She found some shorts and a shirt that fit Lex perfectly.

Clark brought Lex out of the bathroom and headed up the stairs to hear his dad ask, “Where are you going?”

“To put Lex in my bed,” he said.

“Why not the couch,” Jonathan asked.

“Because,” Clark said, “Lex would never just put me on a couch.”

Jonathan scowled after him as Martha poked him in the ribs, “He got you there,” she said as they followed him up the stairs.

She watched how tenderly Clark placed Lex on his bed and gently pulled the covers up to his neck. Lex started to shake again and Martha felt his forehead, he was burning up.

She looked at her son, “I thing we need to call a doctor.”

Lex’s eyes snapped open shouting, “No doctors!”

“Lex,’ Martha cooed trying to soothe him, “You’re not well.”

“No,” he cried, “Clark! Please, no doctors, please!”

Clark looked at him with shocked eyes. He had never heard Lex beg before. Martha looked concerned to where Jonathan just smirked and muttered under his breath, “Probably does not want them to find the drugs in his system.”

Clark took him by the hand, “Ok,” he said, “No doctors, I promise.”

Lex smiled up at him and fell back into disturbed dreams.

“Clark,” Martha said, “Go and change into some dry clothes while I get the electric blanket.”

Jonathan put a hand on his sons shoulder to stop him, “What happened?”

Clark turned around and said, “We were sitting on some rocks and I lost my balance and fell in. Lex helped me out and got wet in the process. He started to shake and I told him lets go to the car to put the heat on. He took a step towards the car and just fell.”

Jonathan could tell that his son was not telling him everything, but his son would never lie to him. He smiled and nodded his head and told Clark to go change into some warm clothes. He looked at the Luthor in his son’s bed muttering about screams, green lights, and a huge explosion. He went to go find his wife.

Clark changed into a pair of flannel sweat pants and a red t-shirt that clashed horribly. He could hear his mom and dad in their bedroom discussing something about Lex. He really wished his dad would just cut Lex some slack. He walked back into his bedroom to see that Lex was sound asleep.

He walked over and sat at Lex’s side to make sure everything was alright. His mom came back in with the electric blanket and he stood up to help her put it over Lex.

“Do you want me to fix you a bed on the couch,” she asked.

“I’m going to watch Lex,” he told her.

Martha hid her knowing smile as she kissed him good night. She looked at Lex with a worried expression but Clark did not notice. She left the room quietly closing the door behind her.

Clark then quietly pushed his chair up closer to the foot of the bed so he could prop his feet up. He watched Lex sleep soundly for about an hour before he himself let dreams take him.

Clark opened his eyes to see the morning rays shining through his small bedroom window. He looked over to see Lex stirring in his sleep and then he opened his eyes to shield them from the harsh light. Clark stretched as Lex groaned.

His mom opened the door and saw Lex sitting up in the bed, “Feeling better dear?”

Lex looked over at her, “Much.”

She smiled, “You gave us quite a scare.”

He put his head down to hide his blush, “Sorry Mrs. Kent.”

“Thin nothing of it dear,” she said, “Clark would never let anything bad happen to you.”

Both boys turned to look up at her to see her not there anymore. Jonathan yelled from the hall, “Get up Clark, you’re going to be late, and wear something nice!”

Clark’s eyes went wide in horror as he cried, “Crap!”

“What,” Lex asked jumping a little from the loud outburst from the farmboy.

Clark ran his hands through his wild hair and moaned, “It’s picture day.”

“Lex,” Martha called, “I dried your clothes, there in the hall.”

“Thanks Mrs. Kent,” he called and then looked at Clark, “Thanks for last night.”

“What are friend for,” Clark told him, “Even though I think it was stupid of you not letting us call a doctor.”

Lex glared at him in mock hurt, “Get dressed farmboy, its picture day.”

Clark grinned evilly and before Lex knew what was happening he was smacked across the face with a pillow, “Make me,” Clark challenged.

“Clark,” Mrs. Kent screamed making Clark yelp, “Hurry up!”

Lex snickered as Clark ran to do his mother’s bidding. He got out of bed and found his clothes hanging outside Clark’s door. He quickly put them on wondering where the hell his shoes had gotten off to. He found them by Clark’s bed and sat down to put them on.

Clark walked back in and Lex looked him over. He had on a nice pair of jeans that were faded a little in the legs and a deep blue t-shirt. That’s all Clark ever wore was jeans and t-shirts, and if it was not t-shirts it was flannel.

“Looking good farmboy,” Lex said which made Clark roll his eyes as he followed him down the stairs.

Clark hugged his parent’s bye and Lex thanked them. Martha hugged him and told him she was glad that he was feeling better and Jonathan just nodded his head. Clark walked out onto the porch just in time to see the bus driving off into the distance. Clark let his head drop to his chest and Lex laughed from behind him.

“Come on,” Lex said walking to his car, “I’ll take you to school.”

Clark looked at Lex with excitement asking, “Really?”

“Of course,” Lex told him as he opened his door, “Come on.”

Clark walked over and opened his door about to get in when he heard his dad yell, “Clark, why aren’t you walking out to catch the bus?”

”I missed it,” Clark called back, “Lex said he would take me!”

“Ok honey,” Martha yelled pulling a protesting Jonathan who said that he would take him back into the house, “Have a good day, and take a good picture!”

Clark’s cheeks turned pink as he closed the car door after him. Lex turned on the engine and pulled the car around taking off at a nice slow pace down the drive. Once he hit the road he opened that baby up. Clark found himself grabbing the ‘oh shit handle’ out of habit when Lex flew around curves.

He came upon the school bus and quickly passed it in a black blur. All the students could see was the license plate which read LEX. Chloe snorted and Pete seethed. She looked over at him from her seat, “What, you just made ten bucks?”

Lex screeched into the parking lot and Clark just sat there. Even though he knew no mere car crash could kill him, hell nothing on this planet but those stupid rocks could kill him, but Lex could die in a car crash. One would think Lex would learn his lesson about speeding after what happened that day on the bridge.

“What’s wrong Clark,” Lex asked with concern.

“From now on Lex,” Clark told him seriously, “Please promise me that you will start wearing your seat belt.”

Lex just looked at Clark but before he could say anything he saw that Clark had tears in his eyes when he turned to look at him, “Promise me.”

“Ok,” Lex said trying to figure out why he was crying, “I promise.”

“Good,” Clark said removing his seatbelt, “I got to go.”

He moved to get out when he felt Lex grab his arm softly stopping him, “What’s wrong Clark? What brought the waterworks on?”

Clark took a deep breath and pushed the tears back, “I thought I almost lost you last night,” he said quickly and got out of the car, “Thanks for the ride.”

Lex just sat there in his expensive car as Clark shut the door and ran off into the school. Clark cared about him so much and even said that he loved him last night at the lake. He even told Clark the he loved him to. He knew that Clark did not mean it the way that he wished he did. Clark more than likely just thought of him as an older brother or something. Lex sighed and realized that he should just tell Clark about the dreams and the cut healing, as well as all the glass breaking for no reason. He looked out his tented widow to see Pete and Chloe getting off the bus obviously arguing with each other with the way their lips were moving and the wild hand gestures. He just rolled his eyes as he watched them walk into the school. He was about to spin out of there, but first, he put his seat belt on.

Clark made his way to the pool because he knew that no one was allowed in here during home room, and in case someone did come in he could just super speed out without anyone being able to see him. He went into the men’s locker room and began to remove his clothes to put on his swimming trunks.

He loved being able to just sneak in here and swim when he knew no one was going to miss him. His homeroom teacher just assumed that he was going straight to the library to do some reading. Clark jumped in and began to swim laps at great speed. He tore through the water as if was air.

He really hoped he took a good picture. He really hated having all the people looking at him telling him to smile for the camera. Last year his smile was so big the camera broke, literally. Well, it wasn’t so much his smile. A meteor freak caused the camera to explode. Somehow the guy had the ability to mess with electricity and cause magnetic disruptions or something along those lines. He was killed when the truck he lifted fell on him when his powers gave out. Chloe had never let him live the whole camera blowing up because his smile had been to big for the lens to take.

Clark took a break and just floated in the center of the pool pretending he was floating on a soft cloud. He could not believe that he had told Lex that he loved him. Lex probably thought of him as a younger brother or something. He wished that Lex loved him the way he loved Lex.

Something was up with Lex and Clark could not tell what it was. He knew he was keeping something from him. One just does not get dirty as hell walking from the drive to the barn unless a meteor freak is involved. Clark really could not blame Lex for keeping things from him becaue he does the same thing. Clark always kept secrets and fed Lex lies to cover his trail. He was so scared that Lex might have been really sick last night. He had just cried out in pain and just fallen to the ground like he was dead.

“Clark, you in here,” he heard Chloe yell from around the corner. He opened his eyes and asked himself how come the ceiling was so low. He realized that he was floating and let out a yelp as he fell causing a huge splash. He came up spitting water and swam to the edge to hear, “Nice one Clark.”

He looked up at her, “Hi Chloe.”

“Care to tell me why you are in here,” she asked, “You do know it’s against the rules, right?”

“Then why are you in here,” Clark asked.

“Because I am a reporter, breaking the rules is what I do,” She said leaning down and grabbed Clark by the nose, “Now tell me, why are you in here?”

He pulled back and rubbed his nose,” I wanted a private swim.”

“Did something happen last night,” she asked, “Or this morning?”

“Lex got sick and had to stay the night at the farm,” he told her swimming back up to the edge.

“He looked just fine to me with the way he left the bus in his dust,” she told him.

Clark’s face turned red and Chloe went into overdrive, “So,” she said putting a hand on her hip.

“So, what,” Clark asked.

She rolled her eyes, “How was it?”

Clark’s eyes widened, “Chloe!”

She laughed her ass off, “Oh come on Clark you can tell me.”

“You really are asking for it Miss Sullivan.”

“Am I really,” she teased.

Before Clark thought he quickly grabbed her by the arm and pulled. Chloe’s eyes widened in pure shock as her mouth formed a perfect ‘O’ of surprise. She fell into the pool with a splash. It happened so fast she did not even get the chance to scream.

She came up splashing and kicking, “Clark Kent, you are so dead!”

Clark was floating a few feet away from her laughing as he pushed her hair out of her eyes. Her eyeliner was running down her cheeks and he snorted again.

She screamed, “You idiot! There is an hour left of school! I’ll kill you! I don’t have a change of clothes or anything!”

Clark laughter and Chloe’s threats of death were cut short by, “Oh, I don’t think that’s going to be a problem Miss Sullivan. You and Mr. Kent will be going home early today,” Principal Kwan said looking down at them in dry humor as he saw her eye liner running down her face.

Chloe screamed and pounced on a struggling Clark pushing his head under the water with great effort in trying to drown him. Principal Kwan was running back and forth looking this way and that trying to figure out what the hell to do while shouting, “Miss Sullivan you stop that this instant,” he demanded, “Do you hear me? Stop it I say! Drowning a student will go on your permanent record!”

Each of their parents was in the office while they sat side by side on a bench. Clark kept telling her he was sorry, but he could not keep from laughing while he said it, which of course only pissed her off more.

“If I only knew how to shoot a gun farmboy,” she threatened.

“You’d miss,” he taunted.

“And their at it again,” Pete said coming around the corner and stopped dead in his tracks when he saw Chloe’s face. Clark tried to hide his smile but Pete snickered and they both busted out laughing.

She was about to punch the shit out of both of them when the door to the office opened so she decided to let the two of them live for now. She watched as her dad gave her his best glare of doom. Really, the man must sit in front of the mirror for hours practicing it. The Kent’s did not look pleased at all and Clark hung his head in shame. They had no idea what the hell was going through their sons head to make him break school rules like that.

The look they were giving him made him want to punch a hole in the ground and jump in. He turned to look at Chloe, “I’m really sorry.”

She looked at him and smiled, “I know you are Clark.”

Clark could not help but smile at the hidden insult and that made Chloe laugh as she looked at Principal Kwan, “So, do we need to gather our own firewood for the public execution?”

“You are grounded,” Jonathan told him as he sat at the kitchen table.

“What,” Clark asked completely outraged.

“You heard me,” Jonathan said, “You broke the rules.”

He looked at his mom, “You have got to be kidding.”

“Your father’s right Clark,” she told him, “You broke the rules. You know the pool is off limits unless it is being used for a class.”

He threw his head back, “But I always swim during that time.”

“You what,” both shrieked and he realized his mistake.

He put his head down on the table, “I go there to get away from everyone. It helps me to think. Chloe just happened to get lucky and find me.”

“So,” Jonathan asked, “You cut homeroom everyday?”

“Not everyday,” Clark told him, “Just every now and then when I don’t want to be around anybody.”

“Clark,” his mother asked.

“Please don’t ground me,” he begged, “Double, triple my chores. I’ll get them done.”

“Principal Kwan was going to suspend you Clark,” Jonathan told him.

Clark closed his eyes and sped from the table up the stairs to his room. The Kent’s only had time to blink and then heard a door slam and a bed breaking. Jonathan turned to look at Martha, “I really hate it when he does that.”

She just looked up the stairs with a worried expression, “I hope he at least took a good picture.”

Clark lay on his bed debating on whether or not he should call Lex. It was un-telling what Chloe’s punishment was going to be. He pulled his cell out of his pocket and flipped it open pushing one for Lex.
