Chapter 3

Jack and Sawyer got up and got dressed as the morning light started coming into the room. Now that Jack was up he seemed preoccupied. He started walking back and forth across the room – pacing almost.

‘Damn,’ Sawyer thought, ‘he’s already getting on my nerves with this pacing and we haven’t even eaten breakfast yet.’

“You okay Jack?” Sawyer asked. “You seem wound up this morning. It wasn’t anything I’ve done was it?”

“No, I’m anxious and worried about everything. I keep thinking about the whole situation. I still can’t believe that Michael shot Ana Lucia and Libby in cold blood and then betrayed all of us by leading us into a trap to be captured by these people.” Jack’s brow was wrinkled and lined.

“Yeah well, it’s amazing what people will do in the name of self preservation. I’m sure he thought it was worth all of our lives for Walt’s.”

“I wouldn’t have thought Michael was capable of such treachery,” Jack replied.

“To be a doctor, you sure don’t know much about the human animal Jack. People are capable of doing anything.” Sawyer’s face clouded momentarily with remorse.

“That’s why I think we’re in a lot of danger from these people. They’ve got the advantage here and can pretty much do anything to us they have a mind to do. Including experiment on us. It bothers me a lot that they took blood from us, and they’ve got to have a lab close by.”

“What’s got you the most worried Jack?”

Jack stopped pacing. “A lot of things are worrying me. Don’t you sorta feel we’re just in a holding pattern here? Like maybe they’re figuring out what they are going to do with us?”

“That may be true, but if it is – I’m glad I’m here with you and you remember me now.”

“Well, I’m glad I’m in here with you too. You know that - I hope,” Jack responded. “I’m still worried about Kate. We haven’t heard or seen anything of her.”

They heard one of the outer doors open down the hallway and then shut and lock. Footsteps came down the hallway and stopped at the doorway. Their breakfast slid under the doorway. Jack went over to the door.

“Hello, can you tell us anything about our friend Kate? Is she okay? We want to see her. Can you help us?” Jack called out. There was no response, just footsteps going back down the hallway and the door opening and locking again. Jack sighed. Sawyer just shook his head.

They sat down and ate their breakfast slowly. At least they weren’t starving them at this point. When they finished Jack got up and walked over and sat down on the end of the mattress and held his head in his hands. Sawyer got up and came over and sat down next to him. He was worrying about Jack – it was apparent he was stressed by all of this. He ran his arm across Jack’s back and shoulders and could feel the tension in them.

“Why don’t you lie down on the mattress face down and let me give you a massage?” Sawyer offered. He made Jack smile.

“Are you really just offering a massage or is this another excuse to get your hands on me again?”

“I’ve seen strung guitars with less tension in them than your back and shoulders. You’re real tight – it’s gotta be hurtin’. I just wanted to help you to relax some – that’s all.”

“Okay, that might do me some good. You’re right about me being real uptight right now.”

“Take off your shirt, undo your pants so they’re low on your hips and lay down.”

Jack did as Sawyer suggested and lay down on the bed. Sawyer kneeled down to the side of him initially and was using the side of his arm to stretch the larger muscles on his back. Jack let out a little moan. “Where’d you learn to do that? You’re really good at this.”

“I lived with a massage therapist for a while. Taught me a lot of stuff. Used to give me massages.”

Jack smiled. “Was she cute?”

Sawyer raised his eyebrows, “Well, yeah he was. Worked at a luxury resort hotel and made good money. Especially in tips. He offered some services after hours.”

“Figures.” Jack said. “I go through med school, residency and advanced training and you’re getting massages from a cute guy.”

“Yeah, well we all make our choices. You were probably banging some nurse and living in a luxury apartment on the East Side and I was living in a cheap apartment somewhere.”

Sawyer moved up to the muscles around his neck and shoulder.

“Owww. Hurts some.” Jack complained.

“Sorry. You’re way too tight. I’ll loosen you up slower.” Sawyer decided to straddle Jack to reach the area he wanted to work on better. He felt Jack get even tenser. “I ain’t workin’ on you for sex, so relax for Christ’s sake.”

Jack nodded.

“You know I’m so glad you finally remembered who I am. I kept thinking all the time that you’d figure it out. Made me wonder if you’d landed on your head when we crashed.”

“Who knows? I may have. I actually woke up in the jungle and was really disoriented. My back was cut up and I was bleeding pretty good.”

“Yeah, I see the little scar. Who sewed you up? You couldn’t reach it could you?”

“Kate came walking by after things calmed down and I had to beg her to help me. Kept thinking she might pass out on me, but she kept her cool and did okay.”

Sawyer started working some on Jack’s arms, trying to get the muscles loose. He ran his fingers over the shooting stars tattoo on Jack’s arm. He really liked it. Bet it really pissed off Jack’s old man too.

“You know what?” Jack said softer.

“What?” Sawyer asked.

“I’m real glad I remembered who you are too. I can’t think of anyone I’d rather be imprisoned with than you.”

Sawyer laughed. “I bet you say that to all your prison mates.”

“Nope, just you.”

They heard the outer door being unlocked down the hall and several pairs of footsteps coming. Sawyer rolled off Jack who stood up and zipped up. Sawyer threw him his shirt and they backed away from the door.

Several men came through the door this time, led by Tom and Pickett. Jack and Sawyer knew something was up this time.

“Morning James and Jack. You need to back against the walk for a bit boys. We’re gonna need to shackle you.” Jack looked over at Sawyer who was bristling. Jack backed against the wall. A number of these guys were armed and two had what looked like stun guns. Jack didn’t want to give them an excuse to use that on him. Tom started handcuffing Jack to the wall. Sawyer wasn’t happy about this at all. He had a very bad feeling about it. He started to resist, but the guy with the stun gun popped it a couple of times and Sawyer frowned but moved over against the wall. Pickett stepped around behind Sawyer and handcuffed his arms behind him but not to the wall. Sawyer knew he was going for a walk somewhere, but wasn’t prepared for what happened next.

“Seems you boys have been having a good time in here together. Too good - fucking each other! They’ve decided to separate you boys, so say goodbye. Everything’s going to change now.”

They slipped a burlap bag over Jack’s head, but didn’t slip it over Sawyer’s head yet so he could see what was happening. Another one of the “Others” took out a bottle and a handkerchief and handed it to Tom who saturated it and stepped up and held it to Jack’s nose and mouth. They were using chloroform to knock Jack out. He’d said he’d thought they’d used that on them earlier. He was shaking his head and struggling against Tom. He was jerking his arms against the handcuffs trying to reach his face. It was tearing Sawyer up seeing them doing this to Jack.

“Jack! Jack!” Sawyer yelled. “I’ll find you again somehow and we’ll get out of here. Don’t give up. Don’t give up.”

Pickett struck Sawyer across the face hard and slammed him against the wall. “Shut up James or you’ll be real sorry.” A trickle of blood oozed from Sawyer’s lip.

Jack was slumping over and falling backwards. Tom caught him and another man uncuffed him. They took the burlap bag off his head. Jack was unconscious.

“You know where to take him right? They’re expecting him.” Tom asked two of the men who nodded. “Lay him down on the floor and make sure he’s locked in there secure. I suspect he’s going to be wild when he comes to.”

“Where are you takin’ him you bastards? You better not do anything to him or you’ll answer to me.”

Pickett pushed him up against the wall. “You’re in no position to threaten anyone here. We know about you Mr. Con Man. You’re the worse kind of low life. You prey on people and steal everything from them. You’re scum – a real animal.”

Sawyer spit blood in his face and could tell he’d really pissed them off now. Tom walked over and took out a stun gun from his back pocket. He said one word to Pickett, “OFF!” Picket pulled his arms away from Sawyer and Tom stuck the stun gun against Sawyer’s groin and discharged it. Sawyer fell onto the floor jerking and curled up. It was pain like none other he’d ever felt. He had no control over any part of his body.

Tom stood over him watching Sawyer jerk from the stun. “You act like an animal; we treat you like an animal James. When he recovers enough to walk, take him and put him in the cage. We’ll see how he likes being treated like the animal he is.”

Tom and Pickett walked towards the door leaving three of the men in the room with Sawyer.

“They have no clue what’s in store for them do they?” Pickett remarked.

“Nope. I tried to warn them. Told all of them not to come back here no matter what. I guess their friend was really persuasive after all. They’re going to wish that they’d stayed on their side of the island. Poor bastards.” Tom shook his head as they walked outside.
