All I Ask of You chap. 3
All I Ask of You pt 3
Sara stretched as she woke to the morning sun shining through her window. *It was a dream. It had to be.* But the more she thought about the previous night, the more she was convinced it wasn’t. She dressed and walked out into the living room of the suite to see Grissom taking his suit out of his garment bag.
“What’s up Griss?”
“Nothing. I’m just making sure everything is set for tonight. What would you like to do today?”
Sara sipped her coffee and then it dawned on her. “Tonight. You’re wearing that tonight? What exactly do you have planned anyway?”
“Not much, just some dinner and theatre tickets. Why? Is that a problem?”
Sara’s smile faded and she sat her coffee down. “Yeah that’s a problem. I brought casual clothes and work clothes for the conference. I never thought I would need date clothes.”
Grissom laid his suit across the back of a chair and sighed. “I’m sorry. I should have thought about that before.” He had wanted this night to be special so he could show Sara just how much she meant to him. He tried to hide it, but is disappointment was obvious. “I’ll make some calls and get something else arranged for tonight.”
Sara could see the disappointment in his eyes and her heart sank. “I’m sorry Griss. I know you’re trying to do something here and I appreciate the effort. I really do. If this conference were in San Francisco or back in Vegas it wouldn’t be a problem. Those towns I know my way around. I’ve wanted to go out with you for so long, and now I have a chance to. But I wind up screwing it up.”
“Sara it’s not your fault. I should have thought about what I was doing yesterday when I set up the reservations.”
She couldn’t hold back the tears any longer. “That’s just it. You were thinking about doing this yesterday, you mentioned it being a date, and you put thought into it so it would be special. I wouldn’t blame you if you never wanted to ask me out again.”
Before he could say anything, she went back to her room and closed the door. Grissom followed her and his heart was breaking as he heard her crying on the other side. “Sara honey, don’t cry. We can do something else, really. Any time I get to spend with you is special because it’s you. This isn’t a big deal.”
“It is to me. Grissom, guys don’t spend a lot of time planning dates with me. This was a first, and it was you.”
Now he understood why she was so upset about it. “Sara what did you mean that this wouldn’t be a problem in Vegas or San Francisco?”
Sara sat up on the bed and looked at the closed door. “Because there I know the city well enough to go shopping. But here I wouldn’t even know where to start.”
He heard her crying again in her room and quietly left the suite. The one thing he couldn’t handle was Sara in tears. He started for the hotel restaurant for coffee and so he could think when something caught his eye. If anyone could help him, it would be the concierge.
Sara heard the phone ringing and ignored it thinking Grissom would answer. When the phone kept ringing she finally opened the door and found the suite empty. Answering the phone she got even more confused listening to the woman on the other end. She knew she hadn’t made any appointments, but she agreed to meet the woman downstairs anyway. She looked around the suite certain that she would find that Grissom had packed and left, but everything was there. She called Grissom’s cell on her way downstairs and wasn’t surprised when it went straight to his voice mail. Sara reached the lobby and saw two women approaching her.
“Ms. Sidle? Oh you’re even lovelier than he described. Let’s get you set, shall we?”
Sara looked confused and started questioning the women. “How do you know me? Who described me? Get me set for what? What exactly is going on?”
The older of the two women smiled. “Ah he didn’t tell you either. I’m Nancy and I work here at the hotel. I’ll be helping you shop today so you’ll be ready for your big night.”
The younger redhead answered Sara’s questions. “I’m the concierge here and that gentleman you’re with mentioned you were upset and explained everything. So I made a few calls and helped him find Nancy and get everything set. Once you’re finished shopping at the spa for a massage, facial, manicure, pedicure, and having your hair and make up done. You’re only job today is have fun and relax.”
Grissom stood in the doorway to the restaurant and watched Sara question the women, and knowing her argue with them. Before he could duck out of sight, she spotted him and was on her way over. “Grissom what is all this?”
He smiled but he couldn’t look at her. “You were so upset earlier I wanted to make things right. And since you mentioned that if we were in a city you knew that you could go shopping, I found someone who knows the city who can take you.”
He finally worked up the nerve to look at her and saw her eyes filled with tears. “Sara I didn’t mean to upset you again.”
“You didn’t. This has to be the sweetest thing anyone has ever done.” She stepped forward and kissed him. Grissom wanted nothing more than to wrap his arms around her and take her back to their suite, but he had bigger plans in mind for the evening. His hands rested on her hips as if they were made to be there as she pulled away. “I better get going.” He smiled as he watched her walk out the door and get into a waiting car. This was going to be a night to remember.
A few hours later Sara’s dress had been bought and she was being pampered in the hotel spa, and of course was the favorite topic of conversation for the women who worked there. “Come on girl. You’ve got to give us something. Who is he anyway?”
Sara smiled. “No one you’ve heard of probably. He’s just a forensic scientist here for a conference. That’s it.”
“Umm hmm. And you two just work together.” “Right.”
“Sweetie I don’t care how well you work together. A man does not send a woman out for the whole Pretty Woman thing unless there is something going on.”
“You obviously don’t know Grissom at all. There is nothing going on.”
“Maybe not yet anyway. Maybe he’s trying to change that.”
The woman doing Sara’s toes looked up. “Well I know one thing. He was getting out of the pool about an hour ago. He may be an older guy, but damn is he fine. I might have to re-think my dating rules about no older men.”
“So where are you off to tonight girl?”
Sara sighed. “I know it’s dinner and he has theatre tickets. Other than that, I have no idea. I don’t even know what tickets he has. And Nancy here won’t tell me.”
Nancy smiled. “No I was sworn to secrecy and my lips are sealed.”
It was almost six when Sara looked into the full-length mirror in the spa and was stunned. She knew she was kind of pretty, but the woman looking back at her from the mirror was beautiful. The blood red dress hugged her in all the right places, swept around her ankles with a thigh-high slit showing of her legs and was slightly off the shoulder accenting her long neck. She wore simple diamond stud earrings and a new pendant necklace she fell in love with while she was shopping. It was a simple gold chain with a dragonfly with iridescent wings on the end. Grissom was glad he had the insight to have her met him in the bar because if she would have met him in the suite looking like that, they would never make it to dinner.
Sara couldn’t believe he arranged for a limo to take them out for the evening, and she couldn’t keep her eyes off of him as they rode to dinner. She had seen him dressed for court, but that look was nothing compared to this. His black suit was tailored in all the right places and confirmed what Sara had always thought: that Grissom was hiding a great body under those baggy work clothes. The cream shirt and blood red tie accented his tan and with his sunglasses the whole package made him look confident, sexy, and maybe a little dangerous. They arrived at Le Mont and Sara thought she had walked into a dream. This was the type of place she had always hoped to be taken, but it never happened. Grissom smiled when he saw her reaction and the restaurant. The website hadn’t lied when it ranked Le Mont as one of the most romantic restaurants in the city.
After dinner Grissom escorted her back out to their waiting limo and they rode to the theatre. Grissom took her hand as he helped her from the limo and watched her face as she saw the posters at the theatre. “Phantom! You’ve brought me to see Phantom!” He couldn’t help himself but smile when he saw how happy she was.
“Of course. I’ve heard you and Warrick talking about it and you said you always wanted to see it.”
Sara was beaming as they walked inside and found their seats. “I can’t believe you remembered something you overheard me say to Warrick over a year ago.”
He reached over and held her hand. “Sara just because it looks like I’m not paying attention, doesn’t mean I’m not.”
Sara watched as the curtain opened and the music carried her away. At some point she found herself snuggling closer to Grissom and his arm was around her while her head rested on his shoulder. After the intermission they went right back into that position for the rest of the performance. Sara could only smile when she felt Grissom squeeze her hand tight and felt his breath by her ear. Her smile grew wider when she realized he was softly singing in her ear.
“No more talk of darkness
Forget those wide-eyed fears I'm here, nothing can harm you
My words will warm and calm you
Let me be your freedom
Let daylight dry your tears I'm here with you, beside you
To guard you and to guide you
Say you love me
Every waking moment
Turn my head With talk of summertime
Say you need me With you now and always
Promise me that all you say is true
That's all I ask of you
Let me be your shelter
Let me be your light
You're safe: No-one will find you
Your fears are far behind you
All we need is freedom
A world that's warm and right
And you, always behind me
To hold me and to hide me
Say you'll share with me One love, one lifetime
Let me lead you from your solitude
Say you need me with you here, beside you
Anywhere you go, let me go too
That's all I ask of you
Say the word And I will follow you
Share each day with me Each night, each morning
Say you feel the way I do
That's all I ask of you.”
Sara felt like she was floating as they walked back into their suite. The night had been so perfect she wanted nothing more than to fall into his arms and stay there forever. But Grissom had other ideas. At the door to her bedroom he quietly thanked her for spending the evening with him, bid her goodnight and brought her hand to his lips before retreating to his own bedroom. He smiled as he closed the door behind him and loosened his tie. He needed to prove to Sara that he could be close to her without closing himself off again, and he had seven days in which to do it.
Sara stretched as she woke to the morning sun shining through her window. *It was a dream. It had to be.* But the more she thought about the previous night, the more she was convinced it wasn’t.
