Chapter 3

Just to Hear You

Pt. 3

The days that followed had a new routine. The nightshift and swing crews from CSI had a rotating schedule so one of them was always at the hospital with Grissom. It was difficult since they still had cases to process and they were shorthanded with Grissom and Warrick out, but Ecklie had members of the dayshift crew rotating in to help out. Normally dayshift looked at the night crew as rivals, but they were still family. Brass stayed over at the hospital often since he was on medical leave. But somehow Sara managed to pick up more than her fair share of shifts by Grissom’s bedside. Nothing had changed since that first night and it was weighing heavily on everyone’s minds.

By the fourth day Nick and Greg had started “Operation Bug Grissom” in an effort to try and force him to regain consciousness. There was absolutely nothing scientific about their theory but the current one was if they were able to get on his nerves enough, that he would wake up just to kick them out. So Greg had set up a small CD player and they loaded it with different types of music. Grissom loved opera, but they thought that would just put him to sleep. So Greg brought Alice in Chains, Nine Inch Nails, Brittney Spears, and several other groups that, according to Brass, no one over the age of 15 admitted listening to. Nick’s contribution to the operation was a compilation he created himself which was loaded with country music.

Sara arrived to relieve Nick from “Grissom watch” and found the neurologist checking on Grissom. “I trust you’ll pass the information along to your friends when they come by.” Nick looked too serious. “Yeah I will doc.” Sara looked puzzled. “What’s going on? What information?”

“We’ve set Dr. Grissom up on an EEG and a video monitor so we can better check his progress. In all truth I don’t like that he’s been unconscious for so long with no response whatsoever. We know he has brain function. Now we’re trying to assess how deeply in the coma he is. Until then we do what we’ve been doing all along. We wait and hope he wakes up soon.”

As the neurologist left the room Sara filled Nick in on happenings at work that day, including her surprise the Ecklie was being so human about their concern for Grissom. Nick filled her in on “Operation Bug Grissom” as Greg had named it, and gave her a CD he created to play while she was there. “I hope you don’t mind. It’s probably not your usual type of music, but these ones just seemed to fit your personality.” “No that’s great Nicky. I’m touched that you thought of me when you were putting this together.” “Well I know how you feel about Griss. I know you won’t tell him and you have your reasons. I just think it’s stupid not to tell the guy when he’s a captive audience.” Sara sighed. “I know you mean well Nick but I can’t. He doesn’t look at me that way and he never will.” “You know Sara if you tell yourself that enough, you just might start to believe it. Come on Sara, you’re like a sister to me. I just want you to be happy, and I don’t see how that can happen if you’re keeping your feeling bottled up.” “Why thank you Dr. Nick. When did you become such an expert on feelings?” “Hey just because I’m from Texas doesn’t mean I can’t be sensitive. Just don’t let it get around ok?” “Don’t worry Nick. Your secret is safe with me. Go get some rest.”

Sara pulled the chair closer to Grissom’s bed and started reading aloud entomology articles from the new forensics magazine she had pulled out of his office mail. After about an hour she ran out of interesting articles to read to him, so she popped Nick’s CD into the player and started it. She just sat and stroked Grissom’s hand as the soulful blues melody flowed through the room. It was so soothing that it shocked her when she heard the one line, and then she knew why Nick put that song on the CD. “No one ever loved that river……..the way I love you.”

The whole CD was similar. The styles and artists were different, but they all conveyed the same message. Love. Nick had just about everything on there from Mark Wills “I Do” to Aerosmith’s “Don’t Want to Miss a Thing”. Part way through “It Would Be You” something inside of Sara broke. She found herself talking to Grissom and telling him everything she had kept long buried.

“You know ever since I walked into that seminar my life changed. There I was a CSI 1 fighting to be taken seriously. I maxed on overtime, read everything I could get my hands on. But in that one day when I walked into your seminar none of that mattered. I looked to the front of the room and saw this handsome man with curls and blue eyes I could get lost in. I thought he was your assistant at first, but then you started your lecture. In that first hour I went from being mildly attracted to you physically, to being in awe of you. You were so intelligent, you were funny, and you had such passion for your work. After the seminar when we started meeting for coffee even that changed. I couldn’t wait to see you. Everyone I worked with noticed that there was something different about me. I denied it, but the explanation was simple. I was in love with you. I still am. I tried telling myself it wasn’t love; it was a crush on my mentor. But it’s not. Everyday I’m around you it grows. I’ve tried to forget you. I’ve tried to get over you. I’ve tried dating other men. But no one can measure up. When some of the new lab techs start talking about what kind of men they want and they ask me about it, I can’t even answer them. If I do, I know I’ll say too much and they’ll know that I’m in love with you. It’s not like I can just say ‘Oh the man of my dreams? That’s an easy one. Go look in Grissom’s office.’ I couldn’t do that. It wouldn’t be professional, and you’ve made it clear that you aren’t interested in me that way. I’m your friend. I’m your co-worker. And that’s all it will be. I know that, and I’m getting to be ok with it. It’s hard being so close to you and not telling you all this, but if your friendship is all I can have, it’s enough. That sounds desperate doesn’t it? But it’s the truth. I’d rather have you in my life that little bit than not to have you in it at all, even if it breaks my heart. So Dr. Gil Grissom, that’s why I’m so uptight around you. That’s why I feel like my stomach is full of butterflies every time I hear your voice. That’s why I have trouble being in close contact with you and that’s why I have trouble looking you in the eye. I’m in love with you. I just wish things were different. I wish you loved me. I wish you could let me in and let me share your life. But most of all, I just wish you would wake up.”

Sara laid holding Grissom’s hand with her head on his stomach as the tears began to fall. All the pain from the past five years that she had bottled up broke free for the first time and she softly cried holding onto Grissom as Nick’s CD played.

If I could win your heart
If you'd let me in your heart
I'd be so happy, baby
Just for these arms to be
Holding you close to me
There's nothing in this world I won't try
No limit to what I'd do to make you mine, 'cause

I'd climb right up to the sky
I'd take down the stars
Just to be in your arms, baby
I'd go and capture the moon
That's what I would do
Just to hear you say that you love me
Just to hear you say that you love me

If I could taste your kiss
There'd be no sweeter gift
Heaven could offer baby
(Oh, baby)
I want to be the one
(I want to be the one)
Living to give you love
I'd walk across this world just to be
Close to you 'cause I want you close to me, yeah

I'd climb right up to the sky
I'd take down the stars
Just to be in your arms, baby
I'd go and capture the moon
That's what I would do
Just to hear you say that you love me
Just to hear you say that you love me

For the rest of your life
(For the rest of your life)
Love me for the rest of all time
(Oh baby, baby)
Just say the word
And I'll give you my world
There's nothing I won't do
Baby, just to be with you

I'd climb right up to the sky
I'd take down the stars
Just to be in your arms, baby
I'd go and capture the moon
That's what I would do
Just to hear you say that you love me
Just to hear you say that you love me
Just to hear you say that you love me, baby
Just to hear you say that you love me
(Oh, I need to hear you say that you love me, baby)
Just to hear you say that you love me
Just say you love me
Just say you need me

Just to hear you say that you love me.

Sara felt someone touch her hair and she jumped. Her tear streaked brown eyes looked up and met tear filled blue ones and a soft smile. Grissom gave her hand a gentle squeeze and pulled her head back down to his stomach as he stroked her hair. He had heard the music, but more importantly heard her confession and her pain. There was so much he wanted to tell her, but there would be time for that later.

A nurse came in to hang a new IV and noticed the tender scene in front of her. Emotions always ran high in the ICU, but what got her attention was that her patient was awake for the first time in four days. “Well looks like Sleeping Beauty decided to join us. I’ll page your doctor and let him know. Is there anything I can get you?” Sara sat up and saw Grissom trying to talk as she wiped her eyes. “How about some water Griss? That should make it easier for you.”

In a matter of minutes Grissom was reclining in his bed watching Sara’s eyes as she wet his lips with ice chips. The neurologist arrived to examine him and Sara pulled away. “I should go call Catherine or Nick or someone and let them know you’re awake. I’ll be back in a few minutes.” Grissom refused to let go of her hand and she looked into his eyes. His voice was rough but it was music to her ears. “Sara. We need to talk.” Sara’s eyes began to fill with tears again and she gave his hand a squeeze. “I know.”
