No Way

My brother was thinking about asking Kaylee to marry him. My brother is a dreamer who actually thinks a girl will marry him when said girl won't even kiss him because he insults her. His mind also goes to Jayne and Book. The gun-for-hire is getting further the prer ter then my brother is with Kaylee. Jayne has touched areas on the preacher's body further up than toes. My brother has a thing for toes; that is part of the reason I go around barefoot.

My brother says with his arms wrapped around me. "We should be landside in a few hours."

"You can't be serious about proposing to Kaylee," I say.

"I love her," Simon says.

"You love me and no one else," I say.

"You're my sister." He sits up in the bed and I rest my head on his lap.

"You don't love her," I say. "I know your mind better than you."

"I want some privacy, at least, between my ears."

"You don't deny it."

"Kaylee and I are good together. I think it would work." His mind wanders to the preacher and Jayne. He doesn't like giving advice in the area of love because his lovelife is pitiful. He goes back to cuddling me. "Mei-mei, I've made a mess of things. I was only thinking about getting you out of that place. I never thought of what we were going to do afterwards."

"You did good."

"They damaged your mind and all my medicine can't make things right."

I could feel his helplessness. "We're here and safe."

"After Early, safe is questionable."

"I handled Early." I kiss his chest and move my hand down his side.

"We were lucky."

"I'm getting more lucid with each passing day. The nightmares aren't as bad anymore. Now, I have to get use to hearing nine voices in my head."

Simon kisses my nose. "Mei-mei, you will."

"With Kaylee, you, Mal, Zoe and Wash, your thoughts correlate with your words. With Book and Jayne, their words and thoughts don't match. Jayne's thoughts are very hostile. And Book has been hiding the truth so long he wouldn't know it if it bit him."

"So do think Book and Jayne are good together?" my brother asks me.

"They both long for the same thing. Jayne doesn't like killing people, except when they deserve it. He wants enough money, so he can live comfortably. Book doesn't care about money. He feels he is missing something, but doesn't know what it is."

"A wife and children," Simon sneers. "He practically bit off Kaylee's head for calling him grandfather."

"Grandfather is a term of respect." I snuggled against my brother.

"I don't have to read minds to know that he's regrets not having children."

"There are men that father children in their seventies."

"Jayne doesn't want children." Simon licks around my ear. My brother thinks that Jayne wouldn't want advice if Book were only a quick fuck.

It was hard to keep my train of thought with Simon's tongue and arms on me. "You think this relationship of theirs is more than Jayne trying to seduce someone that he can't easily have."

"If it were that, Jayne would have given up. He came to me for advice. It must mean a lot to him."

"I don't want to talk," I say.

"Sleeping with you is wrong," says Simon.

"That's not what your mind is saying. You want me," I tease, knowing his conflict. I didn't really mind if we didn't do more than cuddle. My period was late and I had cut holes in all the condoms. I got what I wanted from him. However, I didn't think this thing out. How was I going to hide a baby from my brother, the doctor? I would have to play ignorant for a while.

Cutting up all the condoms meant that Wash and Zoe were also risking pregnancy. Not that I cared.
