Chapter 3
story
Sookie wandered into the diner and watched Luke pouring coffee for
a customer. She took a seat and smiled at him. “Afternoon, Luke.”
“Hello, Sookie,” he replied. “What can I get you?”
“Um, I think I’ll have a blueberry muffin. Can I decorate it?”
“Sure, whatever,” he replied, cleaning up another patron’s plate.
Sookie’s eyes widened. Luke had never, ever agreed to let her do any
work on his food. “Luke, hello? Are you okay?”
“What?”
“Luke, you just agreed to let me decorate your food.”
“Oh,” he said. He looked at her. “I suppose Lorelai told you everything?”
Sookie nodded. “I’m sorry.”
Luke shrugged. “I’m fine. If she doesn’t want to be with me, that’s
fine.”
“But she does!” Sookie cried. “She’s just very confused at the moment.”
“Her and me both,” Luke mumbled.
Sookie smiled. “Did you really tell her that you loved her?”
Luke’s eyes widened. “She told you that?”
“So you did tell her.”
Luke shrugged again. “Maybe.”
“You two need to talk.”
Luke frowned. “Believe me, I think Lorelai Gilmore and I have done
enough talking to last us a while.”
Sookie pondered that comment, deciding it was time she talked to Lorelai
again.

Miss Patty bustled into Lorelai’s house, following Sookie. “Oh doll,
how are you?”relarelai sent Sookie a look.
“Most of the town knows,” Sookie sighed.
Lorelai buried her head into the sofa and growled.
“If it helps any, Luke is depressed,” Sookie offered.
“I don’t want Luke to be depressed!” Lorelai cried. “This is my fault,
he shouldn’t be depressed for something I did!”
“I’ll go talk to him,” Miss Patty told them, and before Lorelai could
stop her, was out the door.
“I told Max,” Lorelai said.
“How did he take it?” Sookie asked.
Lorelai sent a loa look. “How do you think?” She bit her lip. “Sorry,
I didn’t mean to be so rude.”
Sookie waved her apology away. “Don’t worry about it.” She looked uncomfortable.
“Can I ask you a question?”
“Of course,” Lorelai replied.
“You told me that you and Luke ‘made love’. Are you saying that it
wasn’t just sex, that it might have been something bigger?”
“I don’t know,” Lorelai moaned. “Luke was…is my friend. And that night
has just changed everything and thrown my mind and life out of the window.
And then throw Max into the loop and my life is just a mess.”
Sookie narrowed her eyes. “Do you love Luke?”
“I don’t know,” Lorelai cried, in frustration. “I thought I was in
love with Max, but how could I have been or still be in love with him when
I cheated on him!”
“You really need to talk to Luke,” Sookie told her.
Lorelai sighed. “I know. I know.”

Lorelai lay in her bed that night, staring at the ceiling. On one hand,
she wanted to go back in time and to erase that night she had spent with
Luke, to save the hurt it had caused everybody and the stress it had caused
Sookie. But on the other hand, she didn’t want to erase it, knowing that
that memory would be burned into her mind and heart for the rest of her
life. She rolled over and stared at the clock. 3am. Damn, she better get
some sleep.

Luke lay in his bed, staring at the ceiling. He felt a pain in his
chest and wondered if he was having a heart attack. Oh no, just Lorelai
Gilmore. He couldn’t believe he had been so stupid. Of course she was engaged
to the teacher. He was good looking, probably well off, and he was sure
more noticeable to Lorelai than her friendly coffee supplier. Actually,
now that he looked at it, Luke didn’t think he was that friendly. He was
probably a downright pain if the truth be known. Maybe he should be nicer.
Maybe a simple, Hello, how are you doing, would be nicer for his customers.
He looked at the clock. 3.15am. So that was why he was coming out with
inane ideas.

Lorelai let out a long groan as she moved from her bed the next morning.
“Bad night?” Rory asked, poking her head in.
“You could say that,” Lorelai answered.
“Want to talk?”
Lorelai shook her head. “No, I’ll be fine. I have to go and talk to
Luke today.”
“Do you want me to come?”
“I don’t think that would be a really good idea,” Lorelai told her.
Rory nodded. “Right.” She smiled warmly at her mother. “Good luck.”
Lorelai hugged her daughter. “Thanks. I’m going to need it.”
