Chapter 3~LunchTime
John sat across from Eve, he had a beer and some fries in front of him. He wasn't very hungry, but knew Eve didn't like to be the only one eating...They found a table that seemed to be in the back, coz, Eve wanted to sit somewhere she could talk to John. She had a glass of wine and a hamburger.
"You're here for something, Eve. What is it?" he sipped his beer. "I wasn't honest when you came to Jersey to see me. On why I didn't want to be in public, but in my apartment only." she hated not to tell him till now, but she didn't want him to worry. "There are guys after me, John. Goonssomesomething...I've told you my stepfather is a very powerful man...when he wants someone, he gets them. Just like with my mother." she whispered. "Yea, I remember his file in the FBI office. That's when we met, when I was undercover in California." he touched her hand. "He beat me and you saved me. But he wants me John. Somehow he found me in Jersey...I told Shannon, she promised not to tell you and I got a plane ticket for myself. I'm sorry, John...I had to hide it..." she felt tears filling her eyes. "Eve." John scooted next to her and gave her a hug. "Come on." he took her hand and paid for lunch.
They went back to the station, "Marcie...We'll be in my office...Knock if anyone wants to see me." John instructed her. He let Eve walk in front of him and he closed the door.
"Sit please..." he went to his . ". "Did you take anything?" he asked. "Only my money to buy my ticket...John he has everything of mine, except the clothes I bought for myself. My mom left me money and he told me it was his. I sneaked into his office to get some, so, I can leave. It was emergency money that was mine and I took some before you took me to Jersey. I didn't think he would find out." she got up and went to the window. John got up and put his hands on her shoulders.
"I take it your staying with Shannon?" he asked. "Yes...But who knows how long that will last. He's a smart man John...I'm not safe anywhere." she just stared out of the window. John sighed and she felt his breath move her hair. "You can stay with me...I am your boyfriend, Eve." he turned her around. Eve had started to cry. "I don't want to get you into this, John. Believe me...I thought it would remind you of..." she trailed off. "That's a little different...I didn't know then who killed her, but that bastard is dead. This son of bitch I know and I can protect you." his hands still on her shoulders.
"I don't know what to do John...I'm breaking down...Afraid to even get a job, coz, he'd find me, living somewhere..." Eve felt herself breaking down from telling John everything. "I'll put a cop or 2 at Shannon's place." he opened the door. "Marcie, tell Smith & Brown I want to see them." he told her. "Of course, Mr. McBain." she called to him. "John..." she touched his arm. "Shannon won't be home till later. I know." he ran his hand over his chin and a hand on his waist. "When I get done here, I'll check on you." he looked to the door, 2 men walked in. "You wanted to see us, McBain." said Smith, his skin was a nice tan color, short dark and Brown had white skin, but a tan was there from being at the beach.
"Go with Miss. Morris to my cousin's apartment...She's staying there for a while. I need you 2 stay with her till someone gets home." he told them. "Of ocurse sir." said Brown. "They'll watch you till Shannon gets there or till I get there." he kissed her.
