CHAPTER FOUR – BREAKING THE NEWS
Phoebe was sat quietly in the living room of Halliwell Mansion, listening to Cole and Leo talk. Piper had answered the door to her and Cole before rushing off to finish dinner, but so far there had been no sign of Paige. Eventually, Phoebe had to voice her concern.
Cole stood up. “If you’re worried, perhaps I should look for her?”
“No!” Leo’s tone was unusually harsh. In a more casual tone, he added “She’s helping Piper in the kitchen.”
“Really?” Phoebe was surprised – she had never known Piper to let anyone help her when she was hosting a dinner. Leo seemed aware of this, and so replied “I think Paige practically forced her to have help.”
“Force who to have help?” Paige’s tone sounded light-hearted enough, but there was a faint undertone. Phoebe smiled at her sister. “We were just discussing where you were, and Leo said you were helping Piper.”
“I wasn’t doing much,” Paige replied. “Just a case of stirring one thing while she sorted out another. She did most of the work.”
“Guys!” Piper’s voice rang out. “Dinner’s ready.”
As Phoebe walked into the adjoined dining room, she spotted something else that surprised her – place names. She glanced curiously at Piper. “Piper, what-?”
“Do you like them? Paige helped me make them.” Piper smiled. “We just thought they might be a nice touch – something different, you know?”
Phoebe wasn’t totally convinced, but didn’t question further. The five took their assigned seats – Paige was flanked by her sisters, while Leo and Cole were sat next to their respective partners. Dinner passed relatively event-free until Phoebe asked “So Paige, what have you been up to lately?”
Paige was so startled by this that she dropped the wineglass she had been about to drink from. Its contents spilled over the table, and a good deal landed on Paige herself. In an attempt to diffuse the situation, Piper took charge. “Paige, go and get a cloth from the kitchen. Phoebe, we need to have a little talk.”
Piper led her sister away as Paige disappeared into the kitchen. Cole moved to stand up. “Maybe I should-“
“Sit!” Leo glared at otheother male. “You’re not going anywhere near Paige again.”
~*P3*~
Piper ushered Phoebe into her bedroom, closing the door after them. Phoebe looked at her sister, confused. “Piper, what’s going on?”
“’K, Pheebs, you might want to sit down.” Piper wasn’t entirely sure how she was going to break the news, but Phoebe had to know.
Phoebe obediently sat on the bed before asking “What’s up with Paige.”
Piper sighed. “There’s no easy way to tell you this Phoebe, but…Cole isn’t human anymore.”
Phoebe giggled. “Is this Paige’s silly paranoia again? I thought we’d been down this route.”
“Phoebe, I’m serious.” Piper’s tone cut her sister’s laugh short. “And he’s been raping Paige.”
“What?!” Phoebe sounded horrified. “That’s…that’s…what did she tell you?”
“She didn’t need to tell us, we found out yesterday.” Piper went on to explain the events of the previous day.
Phoebe was stunned into silence. Eventually, she managed to get her voice working again, and said “Are you sure about how long this has been going on for?”
“I know she wasn’t making it up, it all fits in with her weird behaviour lately.” Piper looked her sister in the eye. “Now you know how supportive I’ve been of Cole, Leo and I have both defended him to Paige. But, you know, it looks like she was right.”
Phoebe fell silent again. Piper sat on the bed next to her and reached for her hand. “I’m sorry I had to tell you this, Phoebe. But you had to know. It wouldn’t be fair to expect Paige to behave normally every time we were with you and Cole, and it wouldn’t be fair to let you believe he’s mortal when he clearly isn’t.”
“I…I understand.” Phoebe stood up. “Where’s Paige? I need to speak to her.”
“Be gentle with her.” Piper cautioned. “From what she’s told us, Cole’s been saying that we wouldn’t believe her if she told us anything.”
Phoebe nodded. “I will be.”
The siblings walked back downstairs to find the two men staring stonily at each other. Paige was sat quietly, clearly not wanting to draw attention to herself. Phoebe turned to her other sister. “Paige, could I have a word please?”
“I can’t believe you’ve all been taken in.” Cole sounded almost genuine. “You know she’s got something against me.”
“I wonder why that would be.” Piper’s tone was cold. “It’s no use trying to worm your way out of this, Cole. We saw you.”
“You what?” Cole went pale as he realised he had slipped up. Phoebe took one look at the guilt in his eyes and turned to Paige. “Actually, I don’t need to. I think I’ve seen all I need to.”
Phoebe walked out of the room and out onto the patio. She stared out of the window, lost in thought, and only realised that she wasn’t alone when a small voice said “I’m sorry Phoebe.”
Phoebe sighed. “What for, Paige? You didn’t do anything.”
“I did.” Paige cautiously approached her sister. “If I hadn’t said anything about Cole not being human, he wouldn’t have been able to do this and you wouldn’t have to have been hurt.”
Phoebe turned to face the younger girl. “Don’t say that, Paige. It’s our fault for ignoring you – if we hadn’t dismissed your fears, he wouldn’t have had that power over you.”
“Okay girls, that’s enough.” Piper’s voice joined in. “Can we get back to the facts here? This is Cole’s fault. He had us all fooled, and when Paige caught on he had to make sure she wouldn’t tell us.”
They were interrupted by shouting from the other room. Running out to see what the commotion was, they saw Cole shoot a fireball at Leo. The Whitelighter just about managed to dodge, before beginning to orb out. He stopped midway for a while, before reappearing back where he started. Cole laughed. “Orbing won’t help you. Will it, Paige?”
Paige had to stop herself from going up to him and slapping him. Phoebe spoke up. “Why are you doing this, Cole?”
Her husband laughed again. “Cole isn’t doing anyth wit witch. I am.”
He shot another fireball, this time at Piper. She managed to freeze it just before it hit her. Straight afterwards, she tried to freeze Cole, but he managed to shake it off. Piper backed away, afraid. “Okay, what would be powerful enough to-“
“What are you doing?” A new, familiar voice broke in. The sisters and Leo all turned to see the Seer standing in their dining room. Phoebe glared at her. “What is wrong with my husband?”
“You mean you don’t know?” The Seer moved to stand next to Cole. “You don’t know he’s taken over?”
“Taken over? Taken over what?”
“The Source.” Piper almost spat the words. “I thought it was too powerful to destroy forever.”
Cole sneered. “That’s right. And yet I still had you lot fooled.”
“Not Paige.” Phoebe spoke in defence of her sister. “She knew even before the rest of us did, that’s why you had to resort to…to…assaulting her.”
“She enjoyed it though, didn’t you Paige?” Cole was glad to note Paige blush at this. Phoebe, however, refused to be swayed by this. “You can’t help the body’s natural response to things.”
“Especially when you’re not free until you do enjoy it.” Piper added.
Cole shook his head at them. “I’m sorry, I don’t have time for this. I have important things to do.”
Flames consumed him as he vanished from sight. The Seer shot a glance at them all before vanishing herself.
Leo turned to the three girls. “So, yet again we have to fight the Source.”
“And yet again we have to fight Cole.” Phoebe added tearfully.
Piper sighed. “Yes, but we’ve done both before. Think what he did to your sister, Pheebs; think what he did to you.”
“She’s right, Phoebe.” Leo agreed. “I know it’s hard to accept now, but he’s declared himself the enemy. And how long do creatures tend to last with you three once you’ve done that?”
Phoebe smiled weakly. “I know you’re right. I just – I can’t believe Cole would do such a thing. But I know where my loyalties have to stand.” She turned to Paige. “You’re my sister and he hurt you, I can’t forgive that.”
Piper smiled as she took first Paige’s, then Phoebe’s hand in her own. “Nothing can beat the Power of Three.”
“And me.” Leo added.
Piper nodded. “Of course, how could I forget?”
Paige smiled for the first time that evening. “Guys, I just wanna, you know, thank you for…well…”
“Believing you?” Piper gently brushed a stray hair from Paige’s face. “Well to be fair, you have been acting very strangely lately.”
“I…I just feel so bad,” said Phoebe. “I mean, if we had still been living with you, Cole wouldn’t have dared-“
“Phoebe, it’s not your fault. Really.” Paige looked at her. “You couldn’t have known what he was going to do, no-body could.”
“What am I going to do? I can’t go back to the apartment, not now.” Phoebe turned to Piper. “I don’t suppose I could-?”
“Your room has been ready and waiting for you to come back ever since you left.” Piper smiled. “Now, speaking of bed, I think we should get some rest. Now that we know what we’re up against, we need our full strength to fight it.”
Paige nodded. “You’re right, Piper.”
Piper shot the girl a look. “Now you promise me, if Cole tries anything – and I mean anything – during the night, don’t even think about not calling us. Even if he does disappear, we know he can now.”
Paige nodded. “I promise. Night guys.”
As she left for bed, Leo turned to the other two sisters. “I think tonight’s been something of a turning point for her.”
“For all of us,” Phoebe replied. “I mean, Cole the new Source. It’s just-“
“Save it for the morning.” Piper grabbed her sister’s arm and led her towards the stairs. “Right now, you and I are going to get some sleep.”
“Think I’ll join you there.” Leo followed the sisters up the stairs, each of the three hiding the fact that deep down, they were afraid of the new turn of events and what it would mean for the Charmed Ones in the coming days.
