Chapter Three
“I’ve considered your
suggestion, Ms. Larkey, and I’ve decided to leave SG teams as they are.”style='mso-spacerun:yes'> The General told the women standing in front
of his desk.
“Yes,
sir.”style='mso-spacerun:yes'> She said, sounding displeased, but knowing
there was nothing she could do about it.
Starting a fight wouldn’t help the situation any.
“Dismissed.”style='font-family:Arial'>
Nadine turned and exited
the office quietly, only to be ambushed.
“Ha!”style='mso-spacerun:yes'> Jack exclaimed.style='mso-spacerun:yes'> “I knew he wouldn’t disband the teams.style='mso-spacerun:yes'> I knew it.”
He said pointing to himself with a grin on his face.
Nadine wasn’t in the mood
though, she just continued walking not give Jack the pleasure.
“Well, that wasn’t quite
as fun as I thought it would be.” Jack
said to the empty hall, leaning back on his heels before turning and heading to
his office.

Jack plopped a large file
folder down on his desk and sat in his chair.
Scooting the chair closer, he opened to the front of the file and
groaned. “I hate reading this crap.style='mso-spacerun:yes'> It’s full of…. crap.”style='mso-spacerun:yes'>
Taking out the first page
he began to read it. It had a head shot
of Nadine and her name. Jack browsed
through the rest of the text before tossing the piece of paper aside with a
bored look on his face.
He started flipping
through the pages of the file when a few pictures fell out.style='mso-spacerun:yes'> Throwing the file folder down, he picked them
up.
“Jesus…”style='mso-spacerun:yes'> He put the pictures down and rubbed his
forehead with his hand. Leaning back in
his chair he sighed, his eyes never leaving the photos.

Nadine was gearing up for
their next off-world mission which was scheduled to embark in only a few
minutes. Finishing, she headed down the
long hall to the Gate Room. Before
entering, the voice of a familiar colonel stopped her.
“Larkey!”style='font-family:Arial'> Jack called,
jogging down the hallway to catch up to her.
This, of course, also
caught the attention of Daniel, whom was already in the Gate Room ready to
depart. He looked toward the doorway
where he could clearly see Nadine and Jack.
Jack stopped in front of
the young women and was at a loss for words for a moment.style='mso-spacerun:yes'> “Look…” he began, but then didn’t seem to
know what to say. He looked around
nervously, his eyes landing on Daniel, whom was watching them intently.style='mso-spacerun:yes'> He gave the doctor a glare.style='mso-spacerun:yes'> “I want to talk to you, but not here.”style='mso-spacerun:yes'> He told Nadine.
The Gate began dialing.
Nadine nodded to Jack
before heading to the base of the ramp, Jack following behind her.
~*~
The world they gated to
was relatively peaceful, when the Volcano in the far distance wasn’t erupting
or causing tremors across the ground.
The gate sat in a rocky
field, on top of a hill, surrounded by several, thinned out trees.
Daniel and Carter began
collecting rock and soil sample while Teal’c went to scout the surrounding
tree-line for any danger.
Jack walked toward the
wooded area, Nadine followed, seeing the unspoken request.style='mso-spacerun:yes'> The Colonel slowed once entering the trees,
his M-80 ready, just in case. Nadine
fell in step beside him.
“I sat down with every
intention of reading your file earlier.
But, I’m not a big reading fan, especially when it comes to boring
government reports. But, I uh… I did
find some… photos.”
Nadine continued walking
beside him, never meeting his eyes.
“I didn’t really have to
read your file to figure out what they were.”
He glanced over at the
women by his side before continuing.
“Years ago, when I was in
was captured.”
“I know, I read your
file.” She interrupted him.
“Well, that makes…. one of
us. Look, what I’m trying to say here
is—“
“Don’t say anything.style='mso-spacerun:yes'> It doesn’t matter what’s in that file,
because that women is dead, she died years ago.
Both for me and on paper.”
“Then why do you still let
it affect you?”
“Excuse me?style='mso-spacerun:yes'> I don’t let it affect me.”
“Yes you do, you said so
yourself, you don’t trust anyone. Isn’t
that because of the things that happened in that file?”
“No, no it’s not.”
“Then what—“
The earth suddenly lurched
beneath them, causing them both to topple to the ground.
“Look out!”style='mso-spacerun:yes'> Jack called to Nadine, who didn’t see the
large piece of rock falling toward her from the large rock formation beside
them.
Before she knew it, she
was in the protective embrace of Colonel Jack O’Neill.style='mso-spacerun:yes'> He, most likely, had just saved her life.
“You
alright?”style='mso-spacerun:yes'> He asked, out of breath from the adrenaline
rush. “You alright?”
He asked again when she didn’t respond.
Nadine nodded slightly.
“Come on,” he helped her
to her feet before pulling her in the direction they had previously come from.
“Everyone
alright?”style='mso-spacerun:yes'> He called out once re-entering the small
field.
text-autospace:none'>“Yes,
Sir.”style='mso-spacerun:yes'> Carter responded, coming over the edge of the
hill Daniel trailing behind.
“I think so.” Daniel said,
gingerly touching his head where a small gash resided.
“I am unharmed.”style='mso-spacerun:yes'> Came Teal’c’s voice
from not far behind them.
“You sure you’re
alright?” Jack whispered.
Nadine wondered why Jack
kept asking her that. She realized then
that Jack’s arms were still around her.
Shrugging out of his hold she nodded, then
walked out into the clearing.
Jack wentr tor to Daniel
and Carter. “Come on, we’re getting the
hell out of here.” He announced.
“Brilliant
idea, Colonel.”style='mso-spacerun:yes'> Nadine called from behind him
sarcastically. “But, if I may be so bold
as to ask our fearless leader; How do you plan on
doing that?”
Jack rolled his eyes,
while turning around he told her, “By using the Star—“
He stopped short when he
took in the sight before him.
Nadine was sitting on the
Stargate. Which was
facedown on the ground.
