Disclaimer: Don’t own them but how I wish I did! And trust me… I don’t make any money from this - I’m just having fun!

Author’s note: I’m having a little fun with my two favourite characters!
In this chapter I decided to use the words “Kevlar” and “flak jacket” (it’s so much fun learning new words in English!) The Kevlar – just because Kiefer looks so hot in it and the flak jacket because… well, if you watch the show you’ll know why!!! :)

How it began

Part 3

They were about to wrap up the case, their hard work and long hours had paid off. Jack gathered everybody around in the conference room and thanked them. He told them to go home and get some sleep. Nina stayed behind when the meeting was over.

“You too”, he told her… “Go home and get some rest…”

She smiled. “I will… Just wanted to make sure you were OK… You need to get home too…”

Home to what, he wanted to ask her but he just nodded. “Yeah, I’ll just need to talk to my source… He is a bit worried that he is in danger…”

“Who is he?”

“You know I can’t tell you…”

“It’s just that you seem to trust everything he tells you… Are you sure he is telling you the truth?”

“Yes Nina, I trust him completely…”

The phone rang and he answered it. She started to walk away.

“Hold on…” Jack said to the caller. “Nina, I need a secure line - now…”

She turned to the computer and arranged it. She nodded when she was done and he made a gesture for her to get out. Reluctantly she left the room and went to her workstation. She grabbed her bag and her jacket and was about to head out when she saw Jack run up the stairs to his office. Something was wrong… She threw her stuff on her desk and quickly went after him.

He was just grabbing his jacket and he was wearing his Kevlar.

“Jack, what’s going on?”

“It was my source, he is in trouble… I have to go and get him…” He checked his weapon.

“Not alone, are you? I’ll call for back up…” She started walking over to the phone on his desk.

“No!”

Surprised by the tone of his voice she turned around.

“He’s in a warehouse downtown, not far from here – it’s faster if I go myself, OK?”

“You don’t know what can happen when you get there... Jack…”

“Just go down to your computer and give me the details of this address.”

He handed her a piece of paper and she did as he wanted. She printed out the building plan and started walking back up to his office. He was on his way down but stopped when he saw her face. She couldn’t let him run off like this… It was too dangerous.

“Nina, get out of my way…”

“No, there is no way I’m going to let you do this…” She was blocking his path down the stairs from his office, standing in the middle of the staircase, her hands on the railing.
“Jack, I’ll call Division…”

“Nina, do I have to remind you that you work for me?” There was a warning in his voice, he was getting angry with her but she didn’t move. He started walking towards her but she made no sign of moving. He was standing right in front of her now, his face hard as he leaned forward.

“Nina…” he said in a whisper “I’m warning you…”

“Jack…” she was pleading now “…Please…”

He just shoved her to the side, pushing past her down the stairs.

Their actions and the looks on their faces created some attention on the floor but she didn’t care. She followed him as he walked towards the garage. “At least take someone with you… take Tony… Take me…”

He walked so fast she had to run to keep up with him.

“No, I need you here… I need you to find satellite photos of the warehouse and tell me what you find…”

He suddenly stopped and turned around. She stumbled into him and he grabbed her arms. His face was so close to hers when he spoke. He no longer sounded angry, he wanted her support, needed her to help him…

“Will you do this for me? I can bring him in alone… he is scared and he knows me… if he sees a lot of other agents with guns he might do something stupid, do you understand?”

She nodded.

“Good, I’ll call you from the car…” He was gone.

She ran back to her desk, quickly accessing the satellite photos of the address he had given her… There was no movement around the building. Her phone rang.

“It’s me…” he said “Got it?”

“Yeah, I can’t see anything strange there but the photos are a few minutes old…”

“Thanks…”

“Jack…?” He had hung up. “Dammit”, she said out loud.

Tony stopped by her desk. “Something wrong?”

She hesitated but one look at the satellite photos made her decide what to do…

“Tony, Jack needs backup to this address.” She handed him the paper with the address.

“I’ll get right on it.”

Tony walked over to his desk and Nina grabbed her phone staring at the screen. Four vans had showed up at the warehouse and she needed to warn Jack.

But he had turned off his phone and she got his voicemail…

Tony came back. “I’ll go with them… we’re leaving…”

She nodded to him and he started to leave. “Wait, I’ll go with you…”

He turned around a bit surprised. Nina hardly ever went on any field missions. Her job was to supervise and make sure everything ran smoothly.

“Ok, get a flak jacket”, he told her and she ran over to the supply cabinet.

She got the jacket and ran after him. A team of nine agents in full gear and two CTU vans were waiting for them outside and Nina and Tony quickly got into the first van. She told the team leader about what she had seen on the satellite photos. She had sent the information to them and the agent quickly assessed the situation and instructed his men. Nina was nervous; Jack was walking into a trap… She glanced at her watch – Jack must be there now…

Jack got out of his car and quickly walked down the alley to get to the warehouse. He had his gun in his hand and he carefully looked around the corner of the building. Nothing.

He ran towards the door. It was locked… He knew there was another way in on the other side and turned the corner.

He saw the vans and backed up just before the first shots were fired. He took cover behind a container and picked up his cell phone. He tried to call Nina but couldn’t wait for her to answer… He had to put the phone down as two men came around the corner armed with machine guns. He took the first man out but three other men appeared in the alley to his right. He swore and wondered if his informant was still alive or if he had been killed.

He had to move fast or else he would be shot… He managed to run across to the building next to the warehouse and got inside. He threw himself on the floor as bullets pierced through the closed door behind him. He stayed down trying to get a look around the room. Suddenly he heard more shots being fired but it came from down the street. Someone was firing at the men with the machine guns. He crawled over to the door and tried to look outside but it was getting dark and in the twilight it was hard to see anything. He had cut himself on the broken glass on the floor and he quickly wiped off the blood on his pants. The cut wasn’t deep.

The gunfire had stopped and he heard running and shouting outside.

Suddenly he heard Tony’s voice.

“Jack… Jack, are you here? Are you hurt?” He shouted back telling them where he was.

It was dark now and the building had finally been cleared. Three unidentified men were dead but the rest had gotten away. There was no sign of his source. Jack was sitting on the ground with his back against the wall. He was angry over Nina’s insubordination. He knew his anger was irrational and he glanced over to where she was standing. She was taking care of everything and he let her – he was so tired. She covered for him again – he knew he should be grateful…

She had barely looked at him after she had run up to him making sure he was OK. He had seen relief in her face but then she had turned away and since then she had been avoiding him. But now he could feel her eyes on him and he slowly rose to his feet. He needed to get some sleep… He had made a huge mistake and somewhere deep inside he realized that the anger he felt towards her was really towards himself. How did he become this careless?

She didn’t really want to talk to him but she should inform him and tell him he could go home so she slowly walked over to him. He was leaning against the wall, looking exhausted.

“Where’s your car, Jack?”

“In the alley”, he told her.

He looked at her with dark eyes and she couldn’t believe it. He was angry with her even though she probably had saved his life…

“Go home, Jack”, she told him in a voice that sounded to him like she thought she was speaking to a child. She put her hand on his arm but he moved away from her.

“Let’s go”, she told him and started walking toward where he said he had parked his car.

He followed her slowly, telling her to turn right when she got to the street. She saw his car parked in the dark alley and went up to it. In her mind she was wondering if he really should be driving, maybe she should offer to drive him home. She turned around and suddenly he was standing right behind her. Her heart skipped a beat as he shoved her back against the car.

“Jack?” His hands were holding her upper arms in a tight grip. He was hurting her…

“Don’t you dare go behind my back again… I gave you an order and…”

“But Jack…” She tried to get away from him but he just pressed himself harder against her.

“I know…”, his voice softened, “…you saved my life…”

Suddenly his hands were on her face and his lips crushed against hers. She gasped in surprise and first tried to push him off her. He wouldn’t move though and she surrendered, giving up her control. He could do whatever he wanted… The thought of him controlling her, taking her, turned her on more than she wanted to admit.

“Get in the car”, he ordered in a low whisper against her neck. When she didn’t move he pulled away.

“Now...”, he said in a menacing voice and she shivered as she realised what was about to happen. She walked around to the passenger seat and got in. He was already inside and started driving before she even closed the car door. She didn’t dare to look at him. For a moment she had hoped that he would order her into the backseat and a little disappointed she realized how much she had wanted this, how long she had waited…

The kiss in his office almost a year ago had started something that needed to be concluded.
