Interlude Three: Long Blue Shadows
Does your smile's covert complicity
Debase as it admires
Are you just checking out your mojo
Or am I just fighting off growing old
"So."
Operations glanced over at Madeline. "Yes?"
"Did you talk to Michael?"
"Yes. Nothing out of the ordinary. Michael's priorities are in order."
Madeline nodded, lips pursed thoughtfully. "Good."
"And Birkoff?"
"Birkoff has a better understanding of the situation than I'd anticipated. His mood is what I'd expect from any teenager with a crush, but he's accepted that he has to move on." She moved to the window. "He's quite mature in some respects."
Operations took out a cheroot and lit it, then took a contemplative drag. "No resistance to losing his downtime?"
"No more than might be expected. He seems to have some anxiety about further repercussions, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. It will keep him in line."
"Good. Oh, one more thing," he said, rising to go to the window. "Perhaps we should look into recruiting someone closer to Birkoff's age, preferably someone we could place in Comm. As many juvenile delinquents as there are in the world, there should be some likely candidates."
Madeline frowned. "Wouldn't that just be a further distraction for him?"
"Not necessarily. Giving him something he can have might keep him from brooding over what he can't."
"And thus he would be more focused on his job." Madeline nodded thoughtfully and rose to leave. "I'll look into it."
"Just to be on the safe side, I'd like you to keep a close eye on him in the meantime."
Madeline smiled, looking amused. "I'd planned to."
