Chapter 28

Chapter 28: The 31st Century

Ariel Moira Kent looked like any other busy careered young woman in her black suit pants and short sleeved and ruffled pink silk shirt with a suit vest over it and high heeled boots. She was walking briskly through the streets her hair flying behind her with the breeze her hurried steps were making. Her face was set and determined but not ragged and worn like many other people hurry through the streets. Ariel loved her job as a zookeeper at the Metropolis Wildlife Park, taking care of the animals, being an activist and educator for them seeing as they couldn’t speak the human language it was nice to be able to speak for them, plus on the rare occasions it happened she loved being a surrogate mommy to the baby animals that would come in.

She loved spending time with the animals who were sometimes a lot easier to handle than the heroes and villains she dealt with. When she needed an ear she came to them, that might be weird for some people but for her it was therapeutic. She loved her jobs, as a zookeeper and a hero but sometimes she just wanted a break and that’s exactly what today was. Though she looked ready to take on the world in her business attire she was not doing that, well not today.
Today she was going on a date with a fellow zookeeper. They had been beating around the bush for almost a year and just a few days ago he had got the courage to ask her to see a movie. They were going to see an old movie at one of the only old movie theatres. A movie she had loved viewing when she was a child, “Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix”. She really wanted this date to go well.

All the other dates and relationships she had had over the years went badly because she was either not around enough or at all, she never trusted them enough to tell them whatever it was she wasn’t telling them, she was always off with that Garth or Rokk or some other dude. She had only told one guy who, what she was and he had died when they were teenagers protecting her from one of her father’s enemies.

She may have only looked at the least 21 but to the normal world Ariel Kent was 26 going on 27, but for those who knew the real her they knew she was reaching her late 640’s. The doctors said even for her special circumstances she was getting old and if she ever wanted to have a family and kids she might want to work on that almost as much as she did her hero duties and zoo keeping. By the normal world’s standards she was reaching the age where she would be looking for a partner and beginning to have kids and she understood that but to have the heroes’ doctors saying her even the Kryptonian side of her DNA was getting to that stage was frightening. Not that she didn’t want a family; she did but to be told that your body was literally a huge biological clock when the last thing you wanted was to bring children into such a dangerous world was unsettling.

She wouldn’t have minded finding a partner to share her almost immortal life with until she was ready to have kids but not just yet. The world had been peaceful until just recently when some anti-version of heroes had come to cause problems. She shook her head from the thoughts it was having and told herself to see where this date went before she freaked about bringing a kid into the world…

Six months later found Ariel and her new boyfriend doing quite well. Logan McCain didn’t seem to mind her being busy so much because he was busy to, he didn’t seem to mind her hanging out with her ‘friends’ and he didn’t push to know why she was so secretive, why she wouldn’t share things with him. That’s why she swore that she would tell him everything soon when they had some time together. A couple weeks later she found her perfect chance to tell him and she did.

Ariel was sitting on her couch in her loft apartment that used to be her family’s but now that both her parents were gone was hers. She had updated things to her tastes while still keeping bits and pieces of them in the apartment. Like her mom’s collection of articles over her very long life or her father’s old jean jackets and boots or his old chair in the den.

When her other boyfriends had seen some of the things she still had around like her mom’s collection she had to quickly explain that over the years the generations had added to the collection. Most believed her but some of her boyfriends had put things that she said and things they knew from history together to figure out who she really was. Learning who she was, they either got freaked or left. These quick departures hurt her but not as much as the ones that stayed hoping to gain some kind of fame by being the boyfriend of Superman’s daughter. These ones she quickly ran off and made sure they kept their mouths shut. That’s why she was afraid to tell Logan but something in her told her she could tell him and he wouldn’t hurt her.

One night after they had finished eating some Chinese takeout that they had ordered they sat with their backs against the couch and some coffee. They talked about anything and everything, just relaxing the day away.

“Ariel, is something wrong you’ve been really quiet tonight?” Logan asked concerned as he watched Ariel watching the fireplace.

“Huh? What? No nothing’s wrong just thinking.”

“Thinking about what?” he said turning his body to hers.

“Oh, nothing,” she sighed.

“Okay, a nothing like that is something so what is it? You can tell me you know. I’m right here.”

“I know, but for how long?” she said almost to herself but he heard and replied pulling her into his arms, “For as long as you want me, baby. What’s wrong, please tell me. You carry the world on your shoulders and I don’t know why, but I want to help you carry it.”

“Okay, I’ll tell you but you have to promise not to say or do anything until I’ve send what I have to, do you promise?” Ariel said quickly raising to her feet and pacing in front of the fire.

“Yes, I promise. Now what is it?” Logan said sitting himself on the couch instead of the floor.

“I’m…I’m The Fírinne. I’m Superman’s daughter. I’m one of the founders, well more like leader of the Legion of Superheroes. That’s why I’m always with my ‘friends’ or can’t make our dates. Why if I do make our dates I’m all messy and out of breath. I fight bad guys with gifts passed down from my mom and dad. I’m not 27, I’m more like…647…Logan?”

Logan was staring at her awestruck but at his name he shook his head to clear it and sat there in silence absorbing what she had just told him. He wasn’t dating a very busy and scatter brained human girl like he thought. He was dating Superman’s daughter, The Fírinne, one of the greatest superheroes they had.

“Logan? Logan. McCain!”

Hearing her slight anger and hidden fear in her tone he replied, “I always did like older women.”

“Logan!” she said punching his shoulder with just a fraction of her strength.

“Whoa, there super gal let’s not break the boyfriend. That wouldn’t be good for your PR.”

“Boyfriend…Are you still my boyfriend?” she said with surprise and worry.

“Yeah, that is if you want me? I’ve seen some of those super hero guys and even though I don’t swing that way I can honestly say they look good…for guys anyways.”

“Yes! Oh yes!”She squealed while jumping into his arms and hugging him tightly but not so tight he broke anything.

Suddenly her happiness changed and she stiffened in his arms to which he pulled away and looked down at her asking, “What is it now?”

“You won’t use this against me or to gain fame will you? Because I have to tell you right now if that’s your plan I’ll put you in the deepest, darkest, farthest black hole I can find, you hear me!” She said her voice going from slightly hurt and afraid to pure menace with the steel in her eyes to match.

“Yes, Ma’am,” Logan said giving a salute.

“Oh you…” she laughed hugging him again.

“Whoever did that was completely stupid. You risk your life everyday...literally, with your superhero duties as well as working with wildlife and we both know that sometimes the animals are scarier,” he replied with a joke in his voice but then became serious with his next words as he looked down at her bringing her chin up so she was looking straight at him, “You need someone who can support you because you support the world all the time.”

“And you’ll be that support?” she asked with a mischievous grin on her face,

“I plan to be. If you want me to be?” He grinned back.

“Yeah, I think I can handle that,” she replied with a huge grin on her face.
