ch 29

Sara began to carry the bags out to the truck and began to pack, as Grissom slowly got ready. His ribs weren’t feeling that entirely well after his fight with Hank. They had already lost a vacation day due to weather and Sara didn’t want to wait any longer.

Grissom appeared in the doorway of the townhouse. “Need any help?” He asked.

“No, I’m good, wanna go get your bag and make sure we didn’t forget anything.”

“Sure thing.” He walked back inside.

Sara checked the contents of the truck and mentally checked them off of her checklist. My suitcases; check. The groceries; check. Grissom’s last bag; check, he is bringing it now.

Touching her arm he roused her out of her thoughts, “Ready to go?”

“Yup, I’ll drive first; we can switch in Utah, alright.”

“Sounds good.”

“Let’s get going.”

Sara waited until he was belted before she started out onto the highway. The lights of Las Vegas were slowly dwindling out. She hummed along to the radio and when she looked over Grissom was asleep.

Those damn meds must have knocked him out. He looks so peaceful as he sleeps.

This vacation is going to be so much fun, alone with Grissom for a whole month.

Shit, what if this doesn’t work, what if…Sara stop thinking about that.

Let’s turn on the radio, no shit, Grissom is sleeping.

The countryside is so beautiful once you leave all the mess of Vegas. The grass is so green, the water so blue, wow. Shit we are in Utah already?

I can’t wake him yet, I’ll let him sleep for now and wake him, as we get closer to Colorado.

The greenery and water passed as Sara drove along the I-90. After a while she finally reached Colorado, she pulled into a rest stop and woke Grissom.

“Griss, we are in Colorado, are you gonna wake up?”

“Colorado, I thought you were gonna let me drive in Utah?”

“I decided against it, you were sleeping so peacefully.”

“Sara, this is an equal partnership, it should be equal, we agreed to switch, why didn’t you?”

“I thought you needed to sleep.”

“You thought wrong.”

Sara got out of the driver’s seat and walked over to the passenger side. He winced as he crawled across the seat and settled into the driver’s seat.

“I guess maybe we shouldn’t have come to Colorado, perhaps we shouldn’t have started a relationship all together.” Grissom growled under his breath, Sara still managed to hear him.

He pulled onto the dirt road that led to the cabin. Sara could see it in the distance.

“Do you really mean that, Griss?”

“Mean what?”

“What you just said, about Colorado and us?”

Shit, she heard that! Now what?

He stopped the truck. Sara threw open the passenger side door and she jumped out even before Grissom could put it in park.

“If that’s how you feel; I don’t even want to be near you.” She screamed as she took off running.

Grissom jumped out of the truck. “Sara, Sara come back, I didn’t mean it…not that way.”

He ran after her, she ran into the woods. He ran after her. He saw her heading into the woods. The branches hit him in the face as he tried to keep up to her. Sara ran much faster being able to scoot between the branches and under the trees. He picked up his pace and just runs after her not caring where he is going. Suddenly Grissom hears the loud rippling crack under his feet. Apprehensively looks down.

I’m on ice? Shit.

“Sara.” He yells as the ice gives way and he falls under.

She turns when she hears her name and she doesn’t see him. “Griss?” She yells. “GIL!!!!”

No answer. She immediately backtracks to go to find him. She spots a broken hole in the ice.

Grissom? Oh no! “Grissom”

She notices a dark shape that is holding on for dear life to the edge of the cracked ice. Sara passes him her hand tries to pull him out. She is unsuccessful, her leg twists under her and she collapsed onto the ice. She successfully hurt her ankle and managed to get herself wet as well.

“Help, over here, he is under the ice, please save him…please.”

There were two cross-country skiers approaching them. Where did they come from? They heard me?

“Do you need help?”

“Yes, he is under the ice, please help him, I can’t lose him.”

“Are you okay?”

“I’ll be fine.”

They helped him out and to his feet and resumed their skiing. Sara thanked them before they left.

“Where is the cabin from here?” She asked.

What have I done? I don’t even know where I am going, where is the cabin? Hypothermia, pneumonia … what have I done…oh God, Grissom…please don’t die, please don’t die…

“I’m not sure.” He stammered between shivers.
