Chapter 26

Chapter 26

“Brian Aiden, put that down, right this minute!”

“Why, Mommy?”

“Because I told you to. Mommy’s kitchen knife is not a toy,” Chloe or to the outside world Lois Lane said as she threw her shoulder length light brown hair behind her and took the knife away from Brian.

“Now go play in the living room with Uncle Bart why Mommy finishes supper.”

“Mommy, why can’t I play with the knife?”

“Because honey its sharp and could hurt you a lot of you dropped it or cut yourself. It’s not a toy but an utensil for cooking.”

“What a u-ten-silly Mommy?”

“The word’s utensil honey and it’s something that helps Mommy cook. Now go on and play with Uncle Bart out in the living ok.”

“Okay, Mommy” Brian said as he left the kitchen and went to play with his Uncle Bart.

“Do you need some help dear?” Martha Kent now the former U.S. Senator of Kansas said coming into the kitchen with a smile.

“See please. Getting a birthday supper ready for a three-year old and all his hungry uncles is hard work when there’s just one person.”

“I know exactly how that feels. When Clark started bringing friends home I quickly learned how to get Jonathan to help me cook and clean the house before we were invaded.”

At the mention of Clark’s name the two women got quiet thinking their own thoughts about eh missing young man.

“I can’t believe he’s been gone 3 years. When will he come home?” Martha asked sadly as she began cutting the carrots for the salad Chloe was making.

“When he’s ready I suppose. Though I wish it was now. I miss him so much. Brian always asks me why the Doomsday monster didn’t like the Red Blue Blur and I have to lie. Give him the edited version of the real story.”

“That boy is a smart one, isn’t he? I know he’s in the daycare at the Daily Planet but if you ever want to go out with friends from work or maybe…with a guy friend I’d be glad to watch him for you.”

“I know and thank you Mrs. Kent I may take you up on that sometime. But I highly doubt it will be for a guy friend maybe some of the girls from work going out.”

“Don’t doubt yourself dear. You’re a beautiful woman,” Martha said smiling a motherly smile at her.

“Thank you, but I really don’t feel that beautiful when I’ve run all over town and back it feels like when Brian gets into one of his energetic moods,” Chloe laughed.

“I know how that is, but you should take some time for yourself you know. Its admirable you giving all your time when you’re not working to your son, but you need some for yourself and what you want. Promise me you will?”

“Okay, Mrs. Kent I promise I’ll take some time for myself soon.”

“Okay, now I must ask because I’m curious has Brian shown any…”

“Powers since when he was 6 months. Yeah, just a few times though. Once when he was 18 months and fell and scraped his knee he healed himself. And when he was two he tripped and was falling down the steps I thought he was really hurt when I got to him but when I looked him over I saw a force field faded from around him.”

“Around him?”

“Yeah, he had created a force field to cover and protect himself and just him.”

“Oh I see. Has he ever…”

“Ever used his powers in front of people. Once when he was really little but we explained it off as the sun being really bright. After that we began telling him when he’s around people not family to try and not use it unless he has to.”

“That’s a good idea. That’s what we did with Clark.”

That night as Mommy was telling Brian a bedtime story he asked, “Mommy, why do I have two daddies?”

“That’s a tricky question but I’ll try okay.”

“You see honey Mommy was married to another man before you were born but we got into an argument and we decided we didn’t want to be married anymore but we would still be friends. Well Mommy was pregnant with you by that man at the time when she learned that another of her friends was in danger and because you had your gifts even as a baby and could tell Mommy was worried about her friend you decided you didn’t want to be born while Mommy was so worried. So you weren’t, but when Mommy’s friend was safe but left for a long trip and the man Mommy used to be married to died saving her from a bad man you decided Mommy needed something to make me happy and so Mommy got pregnant and had you. But because you chose to be born at a time when Mommy wasn’t married or even dating someone and only hanging out with your Daddy and uncles and aunts when Mommy began to show and even a little before that people said Daddy was…well your Daddy and we let them. Believing it was easier that way for all involved then trying to tell them different.”

“Cuz of my gifts?”

“Yes and no honey. Yes because the world though it knows of people with gifts and even though they know not all people with powers are bad like your aunts and uncles and your Mommy who help people…they still fear us because we’re different.”

“Is different bad Mommy?”

“No honey. Different isn’t bad. It’s just some people afraid of what they don’t understand.”

“Is that why my uncles and aunts, Daddy and even you Mommy act like the superheroes from the comics?”

“Yes, honey we want to help people with our powers without them fearing us. So we have own normal lives and our hero ones.”

“So because I had my gifts when I was really little you said Daddy was my Daddy when I had another Daddy but he was in Heaven?”

“Yes, honey.”

“Isn’t that lying? Isn’t lying bad?”

“Yes, honey but sometimes to protect important secrets it’s okay. Like when everyone tells you not to use your gifts unless you really have to or how you have to keep the family’s hero secret.”

“Oh okay, Mommy. Mommy?”

“Yes honey?”

“Do you think my other Daddy is mad that I call Daddy…Daddy?”

“No, honey your other daddy won’t mind you calling Daddy, Daddy. Your other daddy loves you and is watching over you from Heaven. He just wants you to be safe and happy and he knows Daddy loves you and will protect you as best he can. He’s proud to share you with your Daddy.”

“Okay, Mommy. Me tired Mommy.”

“Okay honey you go to sleep. Mommy will be right down the hall if you need her and the night light in the hallway is lit so you won’t be afraid of the dark ok.”

“K,” a sleepy Brian said as he drifted off to sleep.

Two years later found the five-year old Brian Aiden learning to ride a two wheeler bike given to him by his Mommy with his Uncle Victor’s help outside on the sidewalk while Mommy got the cake for his party ready. Brian’s friends from his school would be coming with their Mommies and Daddies soon. Daddy hadn’t gotten there yet but he had called to tell Brian he would be there as soon as his meeting got done. Brian wasn’t worried, Daddy never broke his promises.

Brian was doing really well Uncle Victor had just let him go so he could try riding on his own. He rode by himself for a few feet until he hit something really solid with his bike and went flying off it into the grass. When he looked up there stood Michael Jacobs a very big and very mean second grader who had picked on Brian ever since he started Metropolis Elementary.

Michael had called Brian mean names and pushed him down when they played outside for recess to the point where Brian wanted to cry but he never did because he remembered what his Daddy once told him when he arrived at his Daddy’s house after preschool one day when he was four.

“His daddy had sat him down on his lap on the big couch in the living room after he wiped the sweat off his bare chest from his workout and asked as he wiped away his tears, “What’s wrong Buddy? You can tell Daddy. I’ll try to fix it if I can.”

“The kids were mean Daddy!” a heart broken four year-old Brain wailed.

“What’d they do that was mean Buddy?” His daddy asked gently as he held Brian close to his warm chest.

“They said because you and Mommy don’t live together you’re not really my Mommy and Daddy!”

“Oh, Buddy I’m sorry they said something so mean, but you know their wrong right? You know that just because Mommy and I don’t live together we are your Mommy and Daddy?”

“Y—Yeah, but Maryann said because you and Mommy aren’t married your bad people. Only bad people have kids and don’t get married.”

“Yes, well Maryann was probably just repeating something she had heard someone else say. You shouldn’t take people’s words to heart Buddy. People who hurt other people by words or actions are just trying to make themselves feel better by making the other person feel bad.”

“But if someone wanted to feel better wouldn’t they want to do something happy?”

“In a perfect world, yes but because the world isn’t perfect and because it can’t ever be because everyone is different some people think if they make other people feel worse than they do they’ll feel better. But what they don’t really figure is it only feels better for a little bit and then they have to hurt someone else to cover up their pain.”

“Oh,” Brian said looking at his daddy with awed eyes.

“So Buddy remember this, when someone says bad things about you or Mommy, I or the family just ignore it. You know the truth and that’s all the really matter. Remember if someone hurts you physically don’t hurt them back go and tell a teacher or a trusted adult ok.”

“Okay Daddy,” and after that they had sat talking about the rest of his day until supper and then they played until it was bath time and after that he had his daddy tell him a bedtime story before he went to sleep with the hall nightlight shining into his room.”

“Whatcha doin’ skinny?” Michael said with a laugh as he looked down at Brian getting up and wiping his pants off.

“Nothing! Just playing with my new bike that my Mommy got me for my birthday.”

“Oh really, I thought you were letting me have your bike,” Michael said up righting the bike and getting on it.

“You can’t do that! That’s mine!”

“Oh, yeah and who says?”

“I do young man,” Brian’s Daddy’s cool voice said from behind the two boys.

“Daddy! Daddy, he’s trying to take my bike!”

“I know Buddy,” he started but turned serious eyes to Michael saying, “Young man I think you should give my son his bike back and apologize to him for saying you were going to take it. Then I’ll be taking you home to have a talk with your parents.”

Michael looked guilty and did as he was told. Then Brian’s Daddy said to take his bike back to the house and he’d be there once he took Michael home. Brian did as his daddy told him to but before he walked back he watched as Michael led his daddy down the street and around the corner to his house.
