Chapter 27

Gil kissed Sara. He transferred the kiss to the top of his daughter’s head.

“I am the most blessed man in the world.”

“Blessed. You never use words like that.”

He looked at his dark headed girls. “It’s the only word that seems to fit.”

Sara transferred Claire to Gil. “Go put her down for bit, Gris.”

He did as she asked. A sense of foreboding tickled his spine.

He returned to find Sara feet folded underneath her in the middle of their bed.

“We aren’t getting married, are we?” he asked.

She opened her arms to him. He sat very close to her.

“We are getting married.” Sara said.

Gil examined the miniscule lines around her mouth. He waited.

“I DO think we should postpone the wedding.”

“Why?”

“We need to sort some things out.”

“To quote a very smart woman, we should have done all that before we had baby. Besides its in two weeks.”

“I am doing this for our family.” She held his face in his hands.

He wanted to believe her but fear and doubt tickled the edges of his mind. “Melanie said that there was something between you and Catherine.”

“She did?”

Sara leaned back into a cocoon of pillows. “Yes.”

“What do you want me to say?” He leaned back into the same pillows, her hair mixing with his beard as she played with this fingers.

“I want you to tell me the truth. Whatever this thing is or was between you and Catherine it’s the second important thing I didn’t know about.”

“I made up my mind a long time ago not to let you see all my flaws, all my mistakes. I never wanted you to see the common in me.”

Sara rested her head on Gil’s shoulder. Relief coursed through him. “Honey, they are what make your life.”

“Our lives. We are all so close. Even Heather has seeped into our lives. I figured that if I didn’t talk about Catherine, then you wouldn’t have to talk about Nick.”

He felt her lips curl in the smile. She kissed a mole on his neck. Claire had one in the same spot.

“What happened, Gris? Did you cheat on Melanie with Catherine?”

“No. I never cheated on Melanie with anyone.”

“Knowingly,” Sara corrected.

“Right.”

“So what was it?”

Before I started dating Melanie and after she and Eddie separated, there was a thing.”

“A thing?” Sara asked softly.

“We fooled around a little. We were lonely and did what best friends of the opposite sex do. We found comfort with one another.”

“What does fooled around what do you mean?”

“We never had sex if that’s what you are asking.”

“How long?”

“From beginning to end? Maybe a month.”

“Were you dating?”

Gil looked far off. “We did what we always had done. We went to dinner. We went to the movies. Only at the end of the night, we fooled around.”

Sara made a soft sound. Gil stole a glance at her. Her eyes were closed. “Did you talk about it, or did it sort of happen?”

“First, it sort of happened, and then we talked about it. Then it just kind of faded away, and we were back to normal. Are you mad?” Gil played with her fingers.

“No.”

“Are you going to have Catherine issues now?”

Sara shook her head again. “Strangely no. I just didn’t know. It was something I needed to know. Over the last two weeks I have learned things I never knew about you. It’s not as it should be, Gil. I should know more about you your past, about your present than anyone. When people around us have more information about you than I do, it puts me in a compromising position. You understand that?”

“Yes I do and I will tell you whatever you want to know. I will never keep anything else from you. I don’t know the etiquette for this. Am I supposed to tell Catherine that you know?”

“She probably figures I do know.”

“So….”

“So?”

“What about you and Nick?”

Sara’s dark eyes cast about the room. “There was never anything between me and Nick.”

Gil eyes registered surprise. “There wasn’t?”

Sara shook her head looking smug for a second.

Gil moved his head so that he could see her eyes. “Warrick?”

Sara floundered for a minute. “We were drunk. Not drunk but we had been drinking.”

“You fooled around with Warrick?” Gil was incredulous.

“We kissed and fooled around a little AFTER both you and Catherine had turned us down for down for dates. The plan was to drown our sorrows. How is that different from you and Cath?”

“It’s not.” Gil conceded. “So what do we do now?”

“I think we should see someone. I think we should get some counseling before we do the deed.”

“Can’t I just talk to you…?”

Sara touched her forehead to his. “Let’s go and see what the therapist says. Can we do that? I am not going anywhere. I just want out marriage to be the best it can be. Okay?”

“I am scared.”

“Of what?”

“That I will lose you and Claire. That I’ll loose my friends if I have deal with all this stuff.”

“None of us are going anywhere.”

Gil believed her.
