Chapter: 26
After a few minutes he felt a hand on his shoulder. He looked up to see Catherine holding out her hand. “Come on you need some air”.
Grissom grasped her hand. “No, I’m ok. I need to stay close by.”
“Ok”. She tugged him across to a row of chairs in a small waiting area.
“Sit” she ordered. Grissom heavily complied and Catherine sat next to him and held his hand.
“She’s going to be ok Gil. No way is she going to let you go, not now”.
Grissom tried to be positive but it wasn‘t working. “And the baby?”
Catherine sighed. “I don’t know”. She tightened her grip on his hand.
Grissom sat fiddling with his fingers nervously. A doctor approached and he looked up quickly.
“Mr Grissom?”
Grissom stood sharply and winced, he’d definitely over exerted his back and legs.
“Are you ok?” The doctor asked.
“Fine”, Grissom replied through gritted teeth.
“How’s Sara and……the baby?” His heart thumping out of ears.
“Sara has been rushed to surgery. We have no choice, we have to do an emergency caesarean. She has lost a dramatic amount of blood. We just hope we can stop the bleeding and get the baby out safe.”
Grissom closed his eyes tightly, trying to take this in.
“What could have caused this to happen?” He asked annoyed wanting answers.
“Hard to tell, a lot of the time it just happens. You don’t see it coming and you can’t stop it once it’s started.
Grissom dropped his head, he couldn’t help thinking this was his fault. Had he put too much pressure on Sara in the bathroom. Had her stressed her out? Did he make this happen?
“Could this have been caused by anxiety or stress?” He asked biting his tongue.
“Possible, but doubtful.” The doctor knew where Grissom was going with this. “Don’t blame yourself Mr Grissom. Unfortunately things….well just happen, and sometimes it isn’t always for the best.”
“Yes”, Grissom groaned. “I know all about that!”
“I’ll let you know as soon as we have any news ok?”
Grissom nodded. “Thank you”.
With that the doctor nodded and disappeared down the hall.
Catherine put a reassuring arm around him. “She’s in good hands Gil. She’ll be ok.”
Grissom sighed heavily and nodded.
“You want a coffee?” Catherine asked.
Grissom shook his head. “No, thank you”. He slumped back down on the chair and held his face in his hands. He just wanted to cry.
Grissom sat, he was going insane. It had been two hours since Sara had been taken to surgery. He couldn’t believe he’d spent the last 7 months in hospital and now here he was, back in one again. He couldn’t sit anymore, so he began pacing up and down the corridor.
“Why the hell is this taking so long!” He finally bellowed.
Catherine just shook her head, she didn’t know what to say to comfort him.
“Mr Grissom?” A voice said softly behind him.
He span around quickly, the doctor who had been treating Sara earlier in the treatment room stood before him.
Grissom clenched his fists tightly and cleared his throat. “Where’s my family?” He asked through a desperate breath.
“Maybe you should come to my office…we can talk there.”
Catherine stood and held onto Grissom’s arm. She didn’t like the sound of this.
“No!” Grissom snapped. “Tell me what’s happening, now!”
The doctor shuffled on his feet slightly.
“The baby?” Grissom questioned.
“The baby is fine, a little underweight and in an incubator for the time being as a precaution, but from what we can see there are no physical or mental defects due to what has happened. You have a lovely baby boy Mr Grissom.”
Grissom tried to smile but something wouldn’t allow it. He swallowed hard.
“And….Sara?”
The doctor lightly sighed and took a small step forward. Grissom could see it in his eyes as the doctor looked at him. Grissom shook his head….no….no.
“Sara lost a lot of blood before and during surgery. She suffered massive trauma during the operation. We did all we could. I’m so sorry but….she didn’t make it.”
Grissom turned white and tears began to stream down his face as Catherine gripped him tighter, feeling the tears begin in her own eyes.
“No! It can’t be”, Grissom cried. “Your lying. Pleease….tell me it’s not true!”
“I’m so…so…..sorry”, came from the doctor again.
Grissom filled his lungs and……………screamed!!!!!!
