Author's Notes: Don has the chance to talk to Charlie. It happens straight after the events from 2x08 “Plain Sight”. I felt that Don and Charlie didn’t quite figure it out. So, here is my little sequel. Enjoy!

Don is running over to his SUV on the parking lot. It’s the first time in weeks that it has been raining! He covers himself with his jacket the best he can. When he is able to make out his car in the glimmering lights of the street lamps, Don jumps inside and starts it. He sighs out, annoyed. Damn rain! He pulls out of the parking lot and drives straight home. And by home he means, over to Charlie.

Yesterday has been a tough day. Though they finally have caught the guy, Charlie has closed the case with some bruises unhealed. Not on the outside, of course, there are no visual injuries. But deeply inside his soul something is not right at the moment. Don frowns as he thinks of the angry and hurt look on Charlie’s face when he left the office with Meghan last night.

Thoughts come and go as he drives on, but nothing in particular. The rain is beating down on the asphalt and on the front window of Don’s car. It’s a real miracle he is able to see anything at all, and so he is quite relieved when he arrives at Charlie’s house finally. He rushes over to the front door and is surprised to find it locked. He looks around, searching for a sign of Charlie or his Dad. No lights shining through the windows of the house nor the garage.

Confused Don steps from one foot on the other, not sure whether he should wait for Charlie or not. He glares at the closed door in front of him one last time before he decides to drive to his apartment. Just as he is about to turn around he hears steps at a near distance, approaching the house. He looks back.

“Charlie! Where’ve you been, buddy? I’ve been looking for you!”, Don at once shouts over, because of the darkness not noticing Charlie’s surprised expression.

“You were? Why?”, Charlie asks when he stands in front of Don.

Don takes a long look at Charlie before responding. His curls are glued to his forehead and cheeks, his clothes are also soaking wet. He looks much smaller than Don has ever seen him.

“I...erm, I wanted to talk to you. See how you’re doing.”, he finally says.

Charlie nods in response. He gives Don a forced, sad smile before he fumbles for the keys and lets them both in.

“I’m doing fine.”, Charlie eventually answers as he whirls his head to shake off some drops of water.

“Charlie, I just...I’m sorry, okay? I didn’t want to take you off the case, but you forced me.”

“No, it’s not that.”, Charlie cuts him off. “I get it why you reacted that way. You did your job. And I am glad you found the girl.”

“What is it then, Charlie? What is you’re not telling me?”

Don is still faced with Charlie back. He can see the tension in his body.

“I thought you would come out with me yesterday and not Meghan.”

Don’s mouth drops open a bit. He didn’t expect such an answer. He thought that Meghan was the right person Charlie could talk to. Considering the circumstances... He might have been wrong after all.

“It kinda still hangs in the air, you know? We haven’t really talked about what happened between us yet. I yelled at you, you took me off the case.”

“Charlie, I thought you knew why I had to do that! You were getting too close, too emotional! You were disturbing the investigation!”

Don can’t quite believe it, what is happening. Charlie turns around suddenly, startling Don.

“You weren’t there, Don! You weren’t there when I needed you! You did not understand me!”, Charlie shouts, his voice hoarse. “I thought you knew what I was going through, what finding this little girl meant to me.”

Don rubs a hand through his hair, moistening it in that way. He is tired of this, he is tired of Charlie reacting emotional to every single thing he, Don, does at work. What does Charlie expect him to do?

“Charlie, I don’t want this. I am sick of this. You cannot be serious right now! I know clearly what you were going through and that is the reason I kept you off the case. Or tried, for that matter. I know it’s tough, but that’s my job, and you have to trust me with it! Because I wouldn’t hurt you, you hear me, Charlie? I would never hurt you! But if you go off wandering without me by your side I cannot help you!” He pauses shortly. “I need you by my side, Charlie.”

After saying this, Don feels like a heavy load has been lifted off his shoulders. Charlie just stares at him, his eyes big and lips parted slightly.

“You know what, forget it! I don’t even know why I came here at all! Call me when you’ve calmed down again.”

Don’s expression has gone from worry and concern to pure disbelief and anger. He stomps off towards the door and seizes for the handle when he stops himself abruptly. He can’t just turn his back on Charlie and go away. This thing has to be settled here and now.

“I’m here, Charlie.”, he whispers finally. “And if you doubt that, I...I don’t know how I can prove you wrong.”

Suddenly arms sling around his chest and Charlie’s chest is pressing against his spine.

“I would have doubted that, if you had walked away now.”, Charlie mutters and lays his head on Don’s shoulder.

Don smiles lightly as he entangles his fingers with Charlie’s, their rain dripped bodies pressing against each other. Anyone who says only sunshine can bring you happiness has never danced in the rain.*
