ch 25
The crime scene was crowded and right in the middle of the desert.
Grissom approached the body. David was already there estimating the time of death. Grissom bent down and investigated the scene.
“She has been dead a while.”
“I see Silphidae, I know she has been here a while.”
“I’ll let you do your thing, Grissom. Call me when you are done. I’m going to go sit in the van and read.”
Grissom bent down to collect the bugs off the body. The wind was coming up. The light flakes were falling like snow.
Snow in Vegas?
The sky darkened and before Grissom knew it the sand was flying around him and upon him like a tidal wave.
Oh no, a sand storm. I need to take cover. What about the body? If I don’t do something the evidence will be lost as well as the body.
Grissom tried to take the body with him. The wind and the sand was making the task difficult. He quickly tried to shove the body under the truck. It was becoming increasingly difficult as the sandstorm picked up. Grissom dug a small hole beside the truck and tucked himself into it until he could get into the truck.
Grissom clung to the truck to try and cover himself from the sand. It was everywhere. He held on until his arms tired. It must have been hours. He pulled himself up and opened the truck and crawled in and closed the door quickly.
He flipped open his cell phone to call for help. It was covered in sand. It wouldn’t work.
This is awful! I hope they can find me. Where is David? He must be in the van. He told me he was going in the van. I hope he is in the van.
He tried to turn the ignition on. It wouldn’t turn over.
Damn sandstorm? I hope I can get out. I just got happy. I can’t lose everything now. I got a family. I got Sara. She is pregnant, she wants more babies, my babies, and I must get out of this.
Grissom sat with his hands gripping the steering wheel. He was tired of the storm. He wanted someone to find him. To get him out of the storm, out of the truck, back into Sara’s loving arms.
Oh Sara. My Sara. I just want to be in your arms.
The sand completely was engulfing the truck. Grissom couldn’t tell if the storm was over or still going on. The front of the SUV was covered with sand.
Breathe. Breathe. Don’t panic. Who am I kidding, panic. Gil brace for this, you may not get out.
He searched for paper. I didn’t have time to change my will, we just got married. I don’t know how legal this is, but here goes nothing.
I, Gil Grissom, do hereby bequeath all of my worldly possessions to my wife, Sara Sidle Grissom.
I leave her the combination to my safe 18-22-34. In there is all the documentation to my stocks and bonds as well as my account numbers.
I want to make sure my family is looked after even though I am not there to do it.
Signed-Gilbert Grissom
Grissom wiped the tears from his face as he signed the paper and folded it up. I need to write a few more letters. Get yourself together Gil, for Sara. He began write the letter to Sara, this was even more emotional.
Sara, my love
I know we haven’t been married long but I do love you. I regret ever letting you go. I regret that even more now than I ever did. I did up a will, I hope it holds up. I fear when they find me it will be too late.
I have a lot of money. You and the children will be very well looked after. It is in my safe in my office. The combination is 18-22-34.
I am sorry. I will never get to meet my unborn child, Sara. Make sure you tell him or her how much I love them and tell them all about me. I’m sorry you will never get your forth child or the fifth, or the sixth…I’m not completely sure how many you really wanted…
My family records are also in the safety deposit box.
Sara, I am so sorry. I hope this letter conveys just how much. I am also writing a letter for each of the children, Amy included. Read it to them often; don’t ever let them forget me.
I love you all so much
Grissom
He was sobbing as he folded the letter up and put it on the seat along with the three letters for the children. He put his head in his hands and cried like a baby.
There was a knock on the window.
They have come to take me away; I guess my time has come.
