ch 23

Sara wasn't in the bed with him the following morning. Grissom sat with his head in his hands. What did I do? I pushed too hard. I never should have asked about her past. Stupid ,Stupid Gil. She probably won't even go to Colorado with me now. She promised she wouldn't leave me. He resisted the urge to call her. He heard singing coming from the kitchen. He had to check out who was in his house. He went to the kitchen. Sara was there, wearing one of his shirts. She was putting pancakes on the stove and chopping fruit. The weight was automatically lifted off his heart. She didn't leave me. "I thought you were gone."

"Just didn't want to wake you." She gave him a smile, barely resisting the urge to kiss him. "Want some breakfast?"

He got over close to her. "You look very sexy in my shirt." He whispered in her ear.

"I was....” Sara bit her lip again, just barely catching herself. "It was the handiest thing. Somehow I couldn't find my nightgown."

"I don't mind." He pulled her into his chest. "Are you going to feed me, I'm starving. It smells great."

"Blueberry or plain?"

"Definitely blueberry, I'm partial to them."

She gave him a small smile. "How many?"

"Two's plenty...for now."

Sara dished out two big blueberry pancakes and set them on the counter in front of Grissom. "Can you pass the fruit?"

Sara wordlessly passed over the bowl, beginning to study him...until he caught her. "Do I have pancake on my face, Sara?"

Sara's cheeks turned pink. "Uh...I need to use your bathroom for a second. I'll be right back."

What did I do now? He continued to chew on his pancakes.

Sara drew herself against the bathroom door. Nice one...now he's catching you daydreaming about being married? That you still sometimes talk to Mara about him?

He finished his pancakes and Sara hadn't returned yet. He went to the bathroom. "Sara." He said knocking on the door. "Are you okay in there?"

"Yeah. I'm uh...I'll be right out."

"I'll be in the kitchen."

Sara waited until he was gone before splashing water on her face to wash out the fact that she had been crying again. It just hurt...that was all there was to it. But on the other hand, she knew that it would be a mistake to just spring it on him like that.... holding back was the only way she knew how to solve the problem, even if it did mean hard knots, sporadic tears and near nervous breakdowns.

Grissom dished himself up two more pancakes. Sara finally returned, walking over to the coffee pot when she saw it was full.

"These are very good, Sara." He said between bites. She glanced over her shoulder and smiled. He got up to go over and kiss her. He couldn't resist. When he got closer he noticed her eyes. "Sara, honey, is something wrong, have you been crying?"

“I'm fine. Just...bad memories." Which was partially true.

"Sorry..." He wanted to kiss her but didn't want to impose.

"So what were you thinking of doing today?"

"I don't know." He chewed some more pancake. "We need to get some groceries for Colorado, Is there anything else you want to do?"

"I've got to go home and do some stuff. Paperwork."

“I guess I can get groceries alone then."

Sara smiled. "It'll be fine." She put her plate in the sink and went back to the bedroom to get dressed. She slowly pulled her clothes on as the tears started again.

"Do you have some favourite foods I can get for you?" He yelled into the bedroom. "For when we go away." She still wants to go away, right.

"I'm easygoing," she called back.

"Anything you can't live without?"

“Kind of a l......" Sara bit her lip, wondering if it was too late. "I can get something in the mountains if I have a craving. Don’t worry about it."

"So what are we going to tell the lab? We need to put in our leave requests."

"Your idea about one vacation and one leave is good." Sara was dressed and walking toward the door again. "I gotta go , Grissom. I'll see you later, okay?"

“Sara. Wait." She stopped at the door. "I want to kiss you goodbye. Will I see you later, maybe for dinner?" Do you work tonight?" He was stammering.

"I'll see you at work tonight," Sara promised, giving Grissom's lips a soft brush.

"I love you, Sara."

She softly touched his face. "I know." I still need Mara though.

"I'll see you later." He reached for her hand not wanting to let her go

"You'll see me," she said again as she gently took her hand away.

He wondered if they were going to be ok, Sara gave him another soft smile and then walked out the door. He went to sit at the table to make a grocery list for Colorado.

That same evening Sara showed up for work, feeling better after her conversation with Mara. Mara had always given her good advice, Sara had found. Grissom found her and called her into his office. She got a look from Warrick and from Nick, whom she had been discussing a case with...more accurately they were in the middle of settling a bet, which Sara had won.

"You owe me a banana chocolate shake, Nicky," Sara told Nick as she got to her feet.

They walked into his office and he shut the door. "As far as they know, you are taking vacation to go see a friend. I'm taking personal leave to go help my mother, is that ok with you?"

"Sounds fine to me."

He wanted to kiss her but he resisted the urge, he knew it was inappropriate at work.

"Was that everything?"

Everything I'm allowed to do. "Yes."

She gave him a smile and went back to Nick and Warrick. Everything was going great; he just hoped he didn't screw it up. He mental noted to ask Sara over after work for breakfast.

Sara tried to keep everything that Mara had told her about doing what it took to make the relationship work, when she saw Grissom approach her in the parking lot after shift.

"Can I cook you breakfast, Sara?"

"Guess it's better than three day old leftovers," Sara allowed with a smile.

"When will you be by? By the way, what was the shake thing with Nick about?"

"Griss, slow down. One question at a time, huh? Not all of us are left brain." She joked weakly. "Want me to give you a ride home?"

"Sure. I gotta leave my truck here while I’m away."

Sara undid the passenger door and then got in to the driver's side. "So what was that thing with Nick?" He asked again.
