Chapter: 22
Catherine returned to find Sara still sitting by the window, looking like she was in a trance.
“Honey are you ok?” Catherine asked.
Sara turned her head. “Oh..err yeah, thanks. Just thinking.”
“About what?”
Sara shook her head. “Oh nothing in particular,” she lied quickly not really wanting to tell Catherine exactly what she got up too at her birthday party. She actually grinned inside at the thought.
“Catherine will you do me a favour?”
“Sure.”
“Can you go and ask the Doctor if I can see Gil? It’s been a few hours now and I have tried to rest. I….just need to see him.”
Catherine could hear the pleading in Sara’s voice. “Ok,” she said and went in search of the Doctor.
Sara sat by Grissom’s bedside. But the Doctor had given her certain conditions on her visiting privileges. She had to remain as calm and stress less as possible. At all times. She was allowed to stay in hour stints, but then had to rest back in her room. It was the best thing for her and the baby.
She held tightly onto his hand. It had now been almost 24 hours since he had been brought out of surgery, but his vitals remained the same and his face still held no colour.
“Hey baby..” Sara whispered stroking his hair back into place. She took his hand and held it to her stomach. “You feel that? You know what that is? That’s….our baby.” She struggled to continue, holding back the tears. “Can you think of a better reason to some back to me?” She chocked.
She so desperately wanted him to open his eyes. She needed him now more than she’d ever needed him before.
Then all of a sudden….there was a loud BEEEEP…… BEEEP!! Another and another. Alarms started to go off everywhere.
“Oh god! What’s happening?” Sara shouted in a panic reaching over and hitting the emergency call button.
Several Doctor’s ran in and hovered over him quickly.
“What’s happening?” She demanded.
Doctor Peters ran in. “Sara you have to leave!” He commanded sternly ushering her towards the door to the waiting nurse with the wheel chair.
“No!” She shouted back. “Not until you tell me what’s happening!” She was crying now.
The Doctor placed his hands softly on her shoulders. “Please Sara I don’t know what’s happening yet. Please go with the nurse and when I know I’ll come to you straight away when I know.”
Sara looked over his shoulder and back at Grissom, the Doctors working on him. A terrible churning in her stomach.
“Sara please…..!” The Doctor begged. “Think about the baby. This isn’t good for you!”
Sara reluctantly headed for the door and she sat in the chair. The Doctor tried to reassure her. “I will come to you as soon as I have any news ok?”
Sara nodded as the nurse swung the chair around and took one last look at her whole life, lying frail on the bed. She prayed for her family…..
Sara sat on the edge of her bed. Nervously fiddling with an empty water beaker. She couldn’t relax. She couldn’t sleep, eat, think. God she was turning into a wreck. All she could feel was massive anxiety. It had been over an hour since she had been ejected from Grissom’s room. She needed to know what was happening, and now! She was about to go and find out when Doctor Peters walked in. He walked over to Sara’s wheelchair parked by the bed and took in in both hands.
Sara frowned. “What……?” She began.
The Doctor smiled. “Are you coming?” His voice was light and strangely unstrained. Not the usual if your about to tell someone bad news.
Sara didn’t ask any questions it took too long, she just got in the chair and the Doctor pushed. She noticed they were heading back to Grissom’s room.
“He’s ok?
The Doctor just smiled but didn’t reply as they approached the door. He gestured for Sara to enter. She looked confused but pushed the door and walked inside.
Grissom was in his usual position. His heart monitor still beeped. His IV still dripped, his ventilator, she did a double take, his ventilator…….was gone! He was breathing!
Sara looked quickly at the Doctor.
“He became massively resistant to the ventilator. That’s why all the alarms went off. His body was forcing him. He was gagging for a breath.” Doctor Peters began. “I don’t know what you said to him but it certainly stirred something.”
Sara smiled, for the first time in a long time she actually really truly smiled and meant it. He was breathing again. Thank god!
“This is good right?” She asked.
“In a way. We still don’t know the full extent of his injuries yet though Sara. Don’t get your hopes up too much…just yet. We still don’t know how long it will take for him to wake up…if he wakes.”
Sara sighed, she still had hope. “Can I stay with him?”
“On one condition. You promise me you will get some sleep afterwards. You have one other priority you have to constantly think about Sara, your baby. You need to take care of yourself.”
Sara nodded. “Ok, I promise just let me sit with him for a little while.”
Doctor Peters nodded. “Not too long.”
The Doctor left and Sara sat. A gleam of hope in her eyes and her heart as she took his hand, squeezing it softly.
