Chapter 20 (20/60)
Confrontation On The Trail

There were a couple of trails that went from the beach to the inland caves campsite and the waterfalls, their freshwater source. Peter decided to take one of the lesser traveled trails as it was in the middle of the day. He liked the jungle in the bright daylight; in some respects it reminded him of the forests near his home in Tennessee. He’d always been a country boy and the jungle reminded him of the wilderness there. He walked quite a distance when he realized with a start that there was someone coming up the path towards him. He was not happy when he realized that it was Kate. She was definitely not happy to see him. “You are a son-of-bitch!” she spat out at him. “A bastard! You go from having a live-in girlfriend to making the two men I probably had the best chance of being together with on this island, fall in love with you. You couldn’t mess around with someone else. It had to be them! I hate you!”

“What???!” Peter said, “What do you mean?”

“Don’t play naïve Peter, I don’t buy it. You were trying to seduce both of them. You couldn’t be satisfied with just one of them? They both want you now and neither really wants me. Sawyer says he does, but I can see it in his eyes. I’ll be the consolation prize if you don’t want him. Jack found me last night and we had a fight too. He was defending you and Sawyer for Christ’s sake! Said I didn’t understand what you’d been through. I asked him if he’d had sex with you too and his face said it all. He couldn’t deny it. You’re not much above a fucking animal do you know that? Just stay the hell away from me. I don’t want to be anywhere around you!”

Peter was speechless. He knew nothing he could say was going to change her mind right now. He just stepped out of her way and let her pass. He thought about what she had said - that both Sawyer and Jack were in love with him. Hell, he thought, what have I done? Both of them. He knew that Jack felt lust and desire for him but he hadn’t thought Jack felt anything more than that. And Libby had told him that she had been able to tell from Jack’s eyes that they had been lovers. Even Sawyer said he could tell that Jack desired Peter very badly. This could either work out between them and be okay or it could turn out to be very, very bad. When he arrived at the caves he refilled his water bottles and was trying to look around for Jack or Sawyer but they were nowhere to be seen. He asked around but no one had seen them lately. He headed back to the beach and dropped off his water at his place. When he got closer in to the center of the settlement he got a shock. Sawyer and Libby were sitting down near the shore talking about something. He thought chances were good that he was the topic of conversation. He sat down on the beach near Sawyer’s tent, just out of their view and watched the ocean. In just a little while he was joined by Charlie and Hurley, which surprised him. He thought given the circumstances that none of the men would probably give him the time of day. They both said hey and asked him how he was doing. He invited them to sit down and watch the sun preparing to set and shockingly, they both had a seat. Charlie asked him again how he was doing.

Peter replied, “I’m okay I guess. I’m still sorry about getting you into trouble the other day. I feel like a pariah now that everyone knows about me being bisexual. Julie said she forgave me, but I know on some level she’s still mad at me. Kate hates my guts after yesterday morning and told me to stay the hell out of her way. Can’t say I blame her. She was sweet on Sawyer and now I’ve messed up everything.”

Hurley spoke up, “Yeah well, seems like it was Sawyer’s choice too. It takes two to tango as they say.”

“That’s right,” Charlie threw in. “It’s not all you. He made the decision to have you stay with him in his tent. Kate had plenty of time to be with him before you two got together. She always seemed to push him away like he was reminding her of somebody else.”

“I know,” Peter said quietly. “But I always seem like I’m in the middle of something. It’s been that way my whole life. Trouble has followed me since I was a kid.”

Hurley looked at him and wondered if he’d used those same hatch numbers that had made his life go to pot. “Yeah, when it seems to be following you, it’s hard to get rid of. I know from experience,” Hurley offered.

“I’m just real screwed up. They locked me up in the Tennessee State Hospital for six months in my teens. Then I was in outpatient individual therapy for four years before I met Julie and then I went to couples therapy for a while with her. Didn’t seem to do me much good. I was wild and still ran around on her all the time with guys.”

“Whoa dude,” Hurley said quietly, “I was on the inside of a psych hospital for a little while myself. Didn’t know we had that in common.” Charlie’s eyebrows kept going up and down, but he just kept nodding his head. He’d known about Hurley but he hadn’t known Peter’s life had been so messed up.

“That’s too bad man, I’m sorry that happened,” was all that Charlie could offer him.

Peter shook his head and decided he needed to redirect the conversation away from himself. He’d already let his guard down and told them more than he meant to reveal. “So how are things with you guys? What are you up to now?”

Hurley talked about liking Libby and Peter smiled. He was guessing that Hurley didn’t know she was a psychologist yet, although she was very attractive, had a great smile and was very easy to talk to. Pete thought if he’d been in different circumstances he’d like to go out with her himself. He told Hurley he should go for it – she was nice. Charlie talked about Claire, baby Aaron, and himself. Peter thought it all sounded very domestic, but Charlie did seem fairly happy. About that time Sawyer and Libby came around the tent since they had heard talking. Sawyer asked if it was a tent meeting they were having. Peter said no they were just chewing the fat and watching the sun go down. Charlie and Hurley took that as their cue to get up and leave. Libby walked over and asked Peter how he was doing and he said okay. He smiled to reassure her. She nodded and said that he and Sawyer should talk. Peter felt his guts clench when she said that. He just wanted to be with him. He wasn’t ready for that talk yet. She left with Charlie and Hurley (who seemed very happy about it). Sawyer asked Peter to eat dinner with him; he had a large fish that he was going to cook. Peter said sure that would be great.
