Chapter 20

“Sara just tell me what you did to Gil. You can tell me. I am your little brother, your Greggo. You can tell me,” he whined.

Sara looked up from the computer in the DNA lab. She punched a finger to his chest. “Greggo, we are not having this conversation. Besides what difference does it make to you?”

“I figure I could do whatever you did to Mia and she’d never leave me.”

Sara pulled a sheet of paper from the printer and marked several corresponding lines. She was surprised that she enjoyed being in the lab. The methodical work relaxed and gave her time to think about her daughter and Gil and their life together. Often she could be heard singing softly, smiling to herself for no reason.

She had gotten in the habit of talking to her daughter. Asking her question she couldn’t answer about blood typing and tread marks.

“What do you think? Tread marks from an SU V or an ordinary pick up truck?”

“I can’t believe that guy colors his hair. It looks so natural.”

Greg continued his pestering. He pointed to the ring on her finger. “Sara, that’s a two karat emerald cut diamond ring set in platinum, and Grissom is actually cheerful. He’s smiling and patting people on the back. He says us boys are going to hang out next week. He asked me how Mia and I were getting along. You did something to him and I need to know what it was.”

Sara showed white teeth. “Let’s put it this way. Anything that I did to Grissom…well you would not be anatomically equipped to do it to Mia.”

Greg thought for a second. “Oh.”

Nick spoke from the doorway. “I wouldn’t worry, Greg. You are five inches shorter than she is. I think getting the date was half the battle. I can’t believe she said yes.”

Greg sighed sweetly. “You have not because you ask a not. Besides I am a good catch.”

Nick looked at Sara. “He is,” she agreed. “You both are. You are straight, working and smart not to mention cute as pie.”

“So when’s the big day?” Nick asked not wanting to dwell on romantic possibilities.

“After this little girl makes her debut. I told Gil I was not waddling my fat ass down any aisle. He tried to convince me at least once week that we should just do it."

“Why don’t you?” Greg wanted to know.

“I want a wedding. Nothing big. I just want something with you guys.”

“How soon after the girl, Sara?” Nick asked.

“I don’t know, maybe two months. I don’t want to step on Mia and Greg’s toes.”

Nick snorted his Texas twang resonated of the walls of the lab. “You and Mia aren’t getting married.”

Greg shrugged self consciously and spoke just above a whisper. “Geez, Sara, are you some kind of mind reader?”

“Only a man who is looking at rings could know so much about mine at a glance.”

“Wow. Good luck man.”

Sara watched her friend as he moved around the lab. When Greg was gone she came to where she stood.

“You okay?”

The handsome Texan spoke quietly. “Everyone is paired off. I’m the last man standing. No offense but I thought I’d at least beat Grissom or Greg to the punch. Now you and Sofia are having babies and before you know it, Mia and Greg walking down the isle. Warrick hardly goes out anymore. He’s always with Cath, and when we all hang out it’s just weird.”

“What happened to Jasmine? I thought you guys were on track” Sara aked.

“Her boss confessed his undying love after five years of footsie. I was the push he needed.”

Sara decided not to comment on the irony of the situation.

“You’ll find someone, Nick.” She looped her arm through his. “You are a terrific catch.”

“Sara…”

“Could you please stop touching me? I am now more scared of Grissom than ever.”

She untangled herself and laughed loudly.

Gil was uncomfortable with Ecklie’s new found team spirit.

“Conrad, I don’t have to interview because I won’t be supervising them. If life is fair and I am certain it will be and you want to still employ at least one member of my household, Warrick should interview them.”

“Are you sure that you won’t stay?”

“As sure as I am that you will move Sara and Sofia to days.”

Conrad sighed heavily. For every week Gil had stayed he had struck a new deal. Conrad had stopped short of promising Warrick night shift supervisor hoping against hope that Gil would stay on.

“I have not decided to give Warrick the job, Gil, but I am sure that whoever I give the job to will be glad that you did the hiring for night shift.”

Gil sighed deeply. Sofia and Sara had both told Gil that they would not consider the promotion even it was offered. That’s was when he had finagled the move to days leaving Greg the only night shift CSI left. Gil was sure that Ecklie would hire Nick or Warrick to avoid hiring a completely new staff. It made sense that Warrick would be chosen because he had seniority.

He needed one more responsibility like he needed a hole in his head. “Make you a deal, Conrad. You weed through them, and I will give them my stamp of approval and they have to come in during my shift. There aren’t enough hours in the day as it is.”

Conrad repeated his now familiar giddy handshake and fled the room.

Sara looked at her fiancé. He was beyond exhausted. She regretted encouraging him to stay. He and Greg were dead on their feet. The temporary CSIs were good, but they were not part of the well oiled machine that had propelled them to the number two lab in the country.

“Baby, you have my permission to quit.” She said seriously.

“Say that again.” He pulled the covers over both of them.

“You can quit.”

“No, the other.”

“Baby?”

“Yes. I like when you call me that.”

“I can't quit. Mia told me that if I quit on Greg, she would hunt me down like a dog.”

“This is why the rule books frown upon romance at the workplace.”

He snaked his hand around her belly just as the baby kicked soundly.

“Soccer girl strikes again.”

“She is a strong little thing.”

“According to the doctor, she’s probably not going to be that little.”

“Yeah but she’ll already be my little girl.” Gil said sweetly. She had never thought of Gil as sweet. She had never thought a lot of things about Gil. He suprised her more each day. Without any warning, tears sprang to Sara’s eyes. She swiped at her face.

“What’s wrong?” Gil pulled her closer.

Sara closed her eyes and opened them again tears still clouding his vision. “I wish I had a father like you. I wish I had parents…”

Gil stroked her hair and said soothing words against her hair.

“She's got a wonderful mother too you know.”

“Gil, I have no parenting examples. Forget genetics. What about nurture? At least you had your mom.”

“Since the day you found out you were pregnant, who have you thought of first?”

Sara sniffed again.

“I know you gave me another chance because of her because you wanted her to have some kind of intact family.”

Sara started to protest.

“No listen. Sara do you know how relieved I was when I looked at you and figured out that you were having my baby. I knew that your patience was wearing thin. Actually it had run out. I made so many mistakes. In a way, my little girl saved me.”

Sara smiled through her tears. “She’s going to have you wrapped around her finger.”

“What else are fathers of little girls for?”
