Chapter Two

II.

When Emma called Rumplestilskin he had confirmed Regina’s opinion that he had no intention of helping ease her suffering through magic. He had actually laughed when Emma referred to his better nature. “You need to refer to something that actually exists.” He said, and in the background Emma heard a girl’s giggle making Emma ponder how someone as sweet as Henry had descended from this primordial ooze of evil.

“I’ll fix it myself.” Emma set her jaw and held her hands over Regina’s ankle feeling completely ridiculous. “Just need to focus on why I’m doing it, who…”

Regina’s hastily grabbed Emma’s hand, “Don’t!” after taking a calming breath, Regina spoke. “You may want to help but there are a lot of bad feelings between the two of us and you have no training on how to suppress those feelings when you do magic. If you had any negative thoughts about me you could very well make it much worse.”

Like you know how I feel, if you did you probably wouldn’t be so concerned. Frustration was written all over Emma’s face but she nodded. “What if we just say I did it – but you fix it? No one needs to know and I won’t tell anyone.”

Regina actually appeared to be thinking about her offer when the door opened and Dr. Whale appeared holding the X-rays. He quickly snapped them in place on the light display.

He pointed at several spots. “It’s broken, Regina. Worst I’ve ever seen. Only good news I have is your CT was negative for a cranial bleed.”  Dr. Whale’s voice changed from clinical to annoyed as he gestured at Regina’s leg. “And we are wasting my time fixing this because…?”

“Regina has given up ma..” Emma gasped as a swift elbow to her gut stopped Emma mid-sentence.

Regina cut in “I’ve decided to try the surgical option. Maybe science over magic for once? I seem to remember you pushing that view not too long ago.”

“I used to believe that.” Dr. Whale’s stretched his arm out in front of Regina and rotated it “Do you remember this? When your … ” At Regina’s fierce look he stammered, “Science does not trump magic, at least not in this. I can repair your ankle but in the long run you may lose mobility and you will definitely be in recovery for at least 6 weeks and perhaps longer …”

A loud chirping and Dr. Whale was out the door glancing at his beeper. “Make a decision and I’ll be back ..”

Emma waited for the door to close. “Just fix it yourself Regina. This is silly. Tell Henry that it was nothing but a sprain and wear an ace wrap for awhile. I’ll even get you some crutches. Putting yourself through this isn’t noble it’s a waste…”

A loud bang and the door flew open bringing with it a breeze of ten year old barreling toward the bed. “I can’t believe it! You are really changing!” Regina lay stunned as arms that Regina had longed for wrapped around her. “Gold said that when you woke up you would just fix your leg with magic but you didn’t! And Mary Margaret said that if you were considering surgery you must really mean you wouldn’t....Mom?”

A tear had escaped and trickled down Regina’s check and onto Henry’s hair. Emma groaned inwardly. “I’ll go find Doc Regina.”
