Just A Night

Elena crossed the hard wood floor and settled onto a stool. A moment later, the bartender approached her and, resting a hand on the wood, asked what he could get her. She immediately asked for bourbon. The words left her lips before she even registered what she was going to say, and she instantly regretted her choice. It was a reminder of the dark haired vampire with the blue eyes who she was desperately trying not to think about.

“I’ll have the same,” a husky voice said, interrupting her thoughts. Elena turned, and her breathing hitched when she caught sight of the speaker. He’d just downed the last of whatever he was drinking, and he ran his tongue over perfect full lips. “So, what’d you fuck up?” His deep green gaze fell on her, and it made her entire body tingle.

“Is it that obvious?” Elena asked as the bartender set two glasses down in front of them.

“I just happen to be able to read people,” the man said, moving to the seat beside her. “And I know that look too well from personal experience.”

That means he’s trouble, Elena thought to herself. A fucked up person with problems…normal, human problems. Trouble to normal people, but Elena was certainly far from normal. If she could handle the Original family, a cocky human shouldn’t bother her. So why did she feel guilty for noticing the curve of his cheekbones, the muscular arms, the sexy fit of his ripped jeans?

She decided to inquire about his “personal experience” with fucking things up. “So what did you fuck up so bad?”

“Everything,” he said with a dry, humorless chuckle. “You don’t even want to know all the shit I’ve done.”

“Trust me; whatever you’ve done, I have so much more on my conscience,” Elena said, taking a swig of her bourbon.

“Stealing hearts?” he joked, a dark undertone in his voice that she couldn’t identify.

Elena stopped partway through lifting her glass to scoff at his comment. “I wish it was that simple,” she shook her head.

The man beside her smiled at that, pausing to drink. “When are things ever as simple as you wish they would be?”

Elena looked at him quizzically. She couldn’t remember the last time someone had been able to relate this closely with her, really understood her. Of course, he didn’t know her problems were all caused by her role as the Petrova doppelganger, that almost everyone she loved had died because of her, but that didn’t matter. She was trying to forget about all of that anyway, to have a normal, human night to take her mind off of the impending...no! She had to stop letting herself think about that. She needed a distraction, so she turned to the man beside her, realizing she still didn’t know his name.

“I’m Elena, by the way,” she said, trying to be discreet as her eyes traced the curves of his body, admiring the way his close fitting black t-shirt outlined his muscular build.

“Dean.” Finally, this mysterious and disarmingly alluring man had a name. “Elena?” he murmured, and she liked the sound of his voice saying her name.

“Mm,” she replied, eager to hear what he was about to say, cross with herself for what she hoped he might say.

“Would you like to take this conversation elsewhere?” he turned his head toward her, tilting it as he focused his eyes on her. The Elena from two years ago would have slapped him and stormed out angrily. A tiny part of her was screaming at her to do just that. It was a very, very tiny part. She caught on fire when his lips curved into a crooked, suggestive smile, and all she could say was “yes.”

Dean led Elena out to his car; it was a pickup truck with peeling paint and innumerable dents and scratches all over it. He snorted angrily as he slid into the driver’s seat. “You know, I used to have a good car,” he said when Elena settled into the passenger seat. “Breaks my heart not to find my little brother and get my baby back.”

“Why don’t you?” Elena asked, although she couldn’t understand how Dean could be so attached to a car. Well, maybe she could. Stefan kept a broken car around for years, and she remembered how excited he was when Matt fixed it. Matt! She had completely forgotten about him. He was probably worrying about her.

“I’m staying in a motel not far from here,” Dean said, starting up the old car and instantly expelling Matt from Elena’s thoughts with his voice.

“Sounds good to me,” Elena said with a smile, and Dean grinned. “You still haven’t answered my question, though.”

“Yeah?” Dean asked. “And what question would that be?”

“If you want your ‘baby’ back so much, why haven’t you found your brother?”

“I can’t talk to him,” he said slowly. “I keep picking up the phone, thinking I’m gonna call him, but…I never do. Kind of pathetic, isn’t it?”

That’s not pathetic at all,” Elena told him earnestly, shifting her gaze from Dean’s face to the road in front of the car. “Maybe spending some time apart from him will be good for you.”

“Actually, I think that might be the problem,” he said. “What I did during this past year I spent away from him… I can’t talk about it with Sam. Some of the things I saw, things I did…he’ll find out everything. He always does, somehow, no matter how hard I try and keep him from it. It isn’t even that I think he’ll hate me for it. It’s just this look he gets. I just want to protect him, but he has a way of ending up in danger anyway. I think part of me hopes that if I stay away from him, he’ll be fine. Maybe if I’m not around, he’ll be able to have the apple pie life he always wanted.” He exhaled, shaking his head.

“My brother is the same way,” Elena smiled fondly at the thought of Jeremy. “He’s always meddling and trying to help me, but all I can’t let him put himself in danger for me. I’ve made a lot of mistakes, trying to protect him. I eventually just sent him out of town, thinking that if he could get away and focus on simple things like school and friends, he would be safe. But that just ended up getting him into even more trouble. We can’t protect them forever, I guess.”

“I guess we can’t,” he said, frowning to himself as they approached the same motel Elena had stormed out of earlier. A moment later, Dean’s expression changed. He lifted his head a bit and his lips formed into a little grin. “What we can do, though, is take a night away from everything. We can forget we ever made a mistake worse than turning the laundry pink and have a good night. Just one good, simple night to enjoy before we have to deal with our problems.” Elena smiled. It was exactly what she wanted. Every time she tried to have a normal day in Mystic Falls, something ruined it. But here, in a cheap motel with Dean, nothing could spoil the mood.
