Chapter 2
Beauty in the Breaking
John was breaking, and he knew it.
After the shooting had ceased on the planet, and Atlantis had been notified, and more of their people had come through, it was already too late.
Teyla kept her hands on the cooling body of one of their own while Ronon went out of his way to search for the few villagers who had run into hiding; The new soldiers readily joining him.
John fell to his knees, as if in slow motion, down to the ground next to Teyla, his own hands moving through fog to touch his fallen team mate. He closed Rodney's eyes, his own eyes copying the movement as tears threatened to fall.
He only looked up when he felt more than heard someone standing near him. John looked up and saw the hollow eyes of Ronon, with the shuttered eyes of his fellow soldiers looking back at him. John grasped Teyla's hand, pulling her up with him as he stood.
Ronon knelt down, his hands easily moving to pick up the lifeless body, his own eyes shattering like Rodney's had done, just minutes ago.
When they walked through the 'gate, the flagship team with a member who was no longer breathing, and the two teams of reinforcements behind them, Atlantis was quiet.
