Close My Eyes Forever

Dean took a deep breath and released it, slowly and noiselessly. Damn, why did Sammy always take so long to check out of the motels they stayed at? Not like it was a difficult ordeal. He patted out a random beat on the steering wheel and his gaze shifted over to the glove compartment. Was he really that bored…? To bring out his secret music stash. Boredom obviously won as he opened it up, taking out a cassette, and popped it into the Impala’s stereo. Gentle acoustic guitar danced out of the speakers. A female voice started to sing and Dean started to sing himself.
“//Baby, I get so scared inside and I don’t really understand. Is it love that’s on my mind, or is it fantasy//?” Dean softly sang, his gravelly voice embracing each note tenderly. “//Heaven, is in the palm of my hand and it’s waiting here for you. What am I supposed to do with a childhood tragedy//?” Dean patted the beat of the song on the steering wheel as each guitar note plucked out of the Impala. “//If I close my eyes forever, would it all remain unchanged? If I close my eyes forever, would it all remain the same//?”
“Dean, you have such an amazing voice. Why have I not heard you sing before?” Dean jumped as the angel appeared in the seat beside him.
“Goddamit, Cas, don’t scare me like that!” Castiel gave Dean a stern look.
“Oh, right. ‘Sonuvabitch, don’t scare me like that’. Is that better?” Castiel sighed and rolled his eyes, a slight smile spreading on his lips.
“Please, Dean, will you sing for me some more?” Dean’s cheek flushed with embarrassment.
“Why should I?” Cas leaned over to smooch Dean’s flushed cheek. The green eyed man found it extremely hard to concentrate on the road rather than say ‘fuck it’ and push Cas into the back seat to apply the same logic to the angel.
“Because I like your singing, Dean. Your voice is beautiful.” Dean gulped.
“Well, if you put it like that…” Dean’s voice was shaky as he sang for Castiel, who leaned back against the window, with a pleasant, entertained look on his face.
“//Like a dagger, you stick me in the heart and taste the blood from my blade. And when we sleep, would you shelter me in your warm and darkened grave? If I close my eyes forever, would it all remain unchanged? If I close my eyes forever, would it all remain the same//?”
“//Will you ever take me//?” Dean was shocked to hear Castiel singing the part of Lita Ford now. What shocked Dean even more was that it seemed the angel knew the words. Well. Might as well have some fun and make it a true duet, right?
“//No I just can’t take the pain//,” Dean sang as he looked at the angel. Castiel seemed to lean closer to him now.
“//Would you ever trust me//?” Dean gulped a little, feeling pain as he sang the response.
“//No I’ll never feel the same//.” The staring that resulted during the guitar solo was the most intense he had ever felt, even if it only lasted for thirty seconds. Castiel stared deeply into Dean’s emerald eyes and Dean shivered beneath his gaze, feeling both scared that the angel would chastise him for his crimes in hell and deeply loved at the same time. Dean felt tears push against the corners of his eyes. He was a regular cry baby around this damn angel. Castiel grabbed his hand, and Dean squeezed it, now singing to Castiel.
“//I know I’ve been so hard on you. I know I’ve told you lies. If I could have just one more wish, I’d wipe the cobwebs from my eyes//.” Silence rose between them then, neither singing. Castiel brought Dean’s hand up to his lips and kissed the back of his hand. Blood pumped through Dean’s body rapidly, excited by the sweet, rare gesture of affection. Castiel then gripped Dean’s face in his hands. Dean begged Castiel quietly for a long awaited kiss on the lips. He had been waiting for that moment so long, ever since the anniversary of his mother’s death on that crappy motel bed. Castiel inched closer and opened his mouth.
“//Close your eyes, close your eyes. You gotta close your eyes for me…//” Castiel kissed each of Dean’s eyelids closed. This was it. It was going to happen.
Yes, Dean thought triumphantly.
“Dude, what the hell are you doing?” Dean groaned, opening his eyes reluctantly. The feeling on his cheeks was gone as soon as he heard his younger brother’s voice.
“Were you about to jack off to Lita Ford?” Sam burst with laughter at this. “In the middle of the day?” Dean took a deep breath. And he had been so close to. He plastered on a phony smile.
“C’mon, Sammy, she’s hot.” Sam snorted with contempt.
“Yeah, I guess.” He opened the Impala door and got in. Dean found himself staring at the place where Castiel had been sitting.
“Um, hey, Earth to Dean. We kinda have to leave for a job in Pittsburgh. Do you mind?” Dean ripped his eyes from the leather of the seat cushion.
“Oh, right.” He started up the Impala and drove out of the motel parking lot.
God. How long ‘til the next time he could be alone with that sweet angel that wasn’t even his yet?
