Chapter Two
I still own nothing of CSI, which I believe is property of CBS and a few other wheeler dealers. I just do this to live vicariously through characters.
Jessica Sanders was too busy to be bored. At least that’s what she kept telling herself when she had a quiet night at the hospital, like tonight. She listened while an elderly patient in the ER explained his list of complaints, waiting for him to finish before she began her examination. She took her time, checking closely the areas he complained most about, before ordering x-rays and blood work. She smiled, assuring him she’d be back when she had the results, and closed the curtain surrounding his bed.
She loved being a doctor, loved helping people, or trying to help people. She’d finished her internship in California, and fielded offers from several hospitals in her home state before deciding to move closer to her twin brother. She hadn’t been able to be with Greg when he’d been beaten and hospitalized. He and her parents had insisted she stay with her internship, convincing her that he was in good hands. It had been this very hospital that nursed her brother back to health. But now that she had completed her internship and was starting on her way to the practice she envisioned for the future, she wanted to be close to her brother.
She’d found a great house, something small but hers not far from the hospital. She had her career. She had her brother nearby after so many years of being in separate states. She should be content, right? Something was missing though. She hadn’t dated from the moment she stepped foot in medical school, through graduation, and with interning she just never had time. Maybe it was time to make time.
It wasn’t her looks. At least she didn’t think her looks would stand in her way of dating. She was rather short at only five foot tall, but everyone always told her that she carried herself as someone taller might. Her long brown hair fell past her shoulders in a tumble of curls. Her light green eyes were her best feature, at least by her standards. She wasn’t exactly thin, but there was nothing wrong with some curves. Granted, she looked a little more attractive in her street clothes, but the scrubs she wore for work were comfortable. She’d been out of the dating game so long, she wasn’t sure whether men would find her attractive or not.
Her pager beeped, and she looked at the page, expecting it to be the lab. It was Greg wanting her to call him when she got the chance. She looked around the practically empty ER and figured now was as good a time as any. She was a little apprehensive. Greg rarely paged her at work, knowing how busy she usually got and how focused she was on her patients. She stopped a fellow resident, Tina Brown, and told her she was going to make a phone call, but to interrupt if the labs came back on Mr. Springler. Tina, the doctor she worked with most on the night shift, was becoming something of a friend. They talked between patients, and Jessica knew that her husband was a CSI that worked with Greg.
“Greg, what’s wrong?” Jessica asked as soon as he picked up his cell.
She could hear his light chuckled and realized that she’d fallen into worried mom mode again. “Nothing’s wrong, Jessa. I just wanted to see what you were planning on doing with your three nights off?”
Smiling and thinking he wanted to invite her to dinner or something to get her out of her house, she answered, “Actually, I hadn’t planned to do much of anything. I kind of decided that after working through the month without more than a day or two off, I deserved three days of laziness. Why, planning on getting your spinster sister out of her house and around people?”
Greg smirked on his end. His sister knew him too well. “Well, yeah. I mean, aside from having breakfast with me on occasion, have you been out of the house besides work and the occasional errand?”
He had her there. Sighing she agreed to meet him at the CSI building in the morning at five. They’d have breakfast after he showed her around his workplace. A tour she had wanted for some time now. Then, before she settled into doing nothing for three full days, they’d discuss her options.
“You know, you’re only three minutes older. Why should I listen to you?” She asked, teasing.
“Because, three minutes or three years, I’m still older. Makes me wiser.” He said, chuckling.
“Fine. I’ll see you in the morning. But don’t expect me to hang around if you end up pulling a double.” She warned. She’d made the mistake of waiting for him one morning at a diner while he pulled a double. She never did get to see him, but after two hours of waiting he’d finally called her cell and told her to stop waiting for him.
“Deal.” He said. “Love you, sis.”
“Love you, too.”
She hung up as she noticed Tina watching her with a little smile on her face. Rolling her eyes she cut down whatever romantic notion her friend had about the end of that phone call.
“That was Greg, he was inviting me to breakfast in the morning.” She smirked as the silly grin lessened. “Thought I had a red hot lover, didn’t you?”
Tina grinned again. “I was hoping. Girl, you have got to get out and meet someone. You can’t fill all your days with yoga, reading, and cross-stitch. And you can’t keep going out on ‘dates’ with your brother, people will talk.”
Jessica gave her a playful glare. “Well, I’m finally getting a tour of the CSI building, maybe I’ll meet a hot lab rat and fall head over hills in love.”
“I don’t know about lab rats, but there is someone there I think you’d like.” Tina said, walking with Jessa back towards Mr. Springler’s bed.
Before she could ask who, her pager went off. Looking down, she realized the lab finished the blood work and another page informed her that the x-rays were ready for her to examine. After working through Mr. Springler’s labs and charts, an influx of traffic started so she never got to ask Tina who at the CSI building she should meet.
