Seven hours later he was awoken by a call from Jules telling him that they’d caught the bastard, how they’d searched his and Gus’s recent cases and came up with a suspect almost immediately, running the guys’ name had turned up a series of assault and battery charges, hauling him in for interrogation, they hadn’t even asked the first question when the suspect had made a full confession.

Lassiter had personally with a great deal of glee slapped the cuffs on, when the man had complained about their tightness, Carlton had stated loudly with false sincerity, “Oh I’m so sorry, they must have slipped.” Then he’d leaned in close to him saying so softly even she could barely hear, “The man you killed was one of the finest human beings I’ve ever met, you sick, demented piece of filth, I hope to God you wind up on the wrong side of a shiv and if you ever manage to get out of prison I will personally hunt you down and unload an entire clip of bullets into you, then do a victory dance on your grave while you burn in hell you son of a bitch.” On the way out the door the Head Detective pushed the man a little too hard and sent him into a wall, saying again in an overly loud voice, “I am so clumsy today, I don’t know what’s wrong with me.”

Lassiter had been none to gentle while processing him. Plus the guy had accidentally stumbled on the way to a holding cell giving himself a nasty bump on the head. Several officers were questioned about it, but all swore they didn’t see a thing. Detective Lassiter was told to keep a more careful eye on his prisoners in the future and the matter was dropped.

It turned out to be the jealous husband of one of their new client’s, they’d been so busy lately that Shawn hadn’t had a chance to look it over, so Gus had met with her a few times to gather info, she thought that her husband was cheating on her and wanted proof for the divorce, she neglected to inform them that said husband had a long history of beating up men who so much as looked at her twice. The husband had seen them together and assumed that Gus was sleeping with his wife, he’d decided that the only way to deal with this was to kill them both, he’d shot his wife three hours before he got Gus. There was no doubt in anyone’s mind that the least he’d get was a life sentence without the chance of parole, if he didn’t get the death penalty.

Not long after that Gus’s mom had called to let him know that the funeral was the next day, and that because he and Gus were civilian consultants to the police, helping to solve a number of cases, he was being give full honors by the city, also there would be a memorial service at their house after the burial, she made it clear he was expected to attend, if it meant she had to drag him there by his ear.
