part 1

~~~Part 1~~~
Jeannie Miller was by nature a sensible woman that believed in logical reasoning, most days. This day, however, didn’t look to be one of them. Storm clouds dark and intimating threatened to release their fury on those below them. The wind was howling and all the rattling windows in the house. The electric was out, so she and her family now sat by candle light at the kitchen table. The room cast in eerie dancing shadows that had one’s eyes darting here and there for signs of something lurking. All these things would put anyone on edge but for Jeannie it wouldn’t have mattered if the sun had been shining brightly and without a cloud in the sky. No, something was wrong and it wasn’t the weather out side. Jeannie felt it down to her bones in that chilling way that you just know someone you love is hurt or in trouble if not both.
Little Madison had practically attached herself to her mother’s hip without showing any signs of letting go anytime soon. She knew Madison felt what ever it was too from the way she clung to her shirt, face buried in Jeannie’s neck. Her daughter always loved of rain storms, heck half the time she had to tackle her daughter to the ground and sit on her to keep her out of the worst of it. Not today.
Caleb sat across from them quietly reading, long ago realizing that comfort wasn’t wanted from him. Her husband knew her and her moods, something that Madison had definitely had gotten from her. He knew that words now would only distress her and their daughter farther. Though it didn’t stop him for sending them worried glances every now and again. Jeannie tried to send him a reassuring smile but knew she failed.
A loud banging at the door had them all jumping nearly out of their skins. At first Jeannie thought it was just something that had been knocked against the door. However, this wasn’t the case as a voice calling her name accompanied the second volley against the door.
Jeannie followed Caleb and stood in the hallway to see who was at the door. Caleb opened it just as lightening flashed. The people that stood there were illuminated in a strobe like flash of light. Jeannie took a small sharp intake of breath at the sight. She knew these people and it only confirmed her worst fears. The Addams Family had come for a visit!
