Chapter One

Clark watched in amazement as spiraling towers of solid ice shot stories up into the blue sky. The sun hit the strange new spires of ice and it was a stunning sight to behold.

He made his way inside and came to a glowing console of crystals. It was so big and bright. He simply had to touch it.

“Welcome, Kal-El,” Jor-El said in a welcoming tone that was happy, “Welcome to your Fortress of Solitude where your training will begin.”

“Training,” Clark asked in confusion, “What training?”

“To defend the Earth,” Jor-El said calmly, “From the evil that has come to destroy it, my Son.”

“My family,” Clark said getting upset, “They need me.”

“I am your father,” Jor-El stated matter of fact, “You have disobeyed me enough, Kal-El, and look where it has gotten you.”

Clark was really getting mad now. Why couldn’t the past just stay dead?

“Billions of lives are at stake,” Jor-El told him, “I will not allow you to botch this up again.”

Clark blinked. Did Jor-El just say botch? He was talking so…human. Was he feeling okay?

“Now,” Jor-El said with the patience of Quan-Yin,” Take that crystal that has been floating in front of those big green eyes for the past seventeen seconds and listen to all I have to teach you, my Son.”

“And if I don’t,” Clark asked wanting to test the waters.

There was an ominous silence and Clark literally jumped when Jor-El bellowed loud enough for bits of snow to fall from above, “If I were alive, I’d take you across my knee right here and now! Take that crystal and listen!”

Clark quickly did as he was told and glowing lights swirled around him with all kinds of symbols. It was as if his brain was downloading centuries of information in seconds.

Lex moaned as he raised his head up out of the dirt, “My fucking head…ouch.”

He slowly got to his feet and leaned back against the cave wall to rest for a second. His head felt as though it had struck a wall…oh, yeah…it had…Chloe! Chloe?

He staggered a bit and stumbled into the inner chamber that had been hidden behind that massive wall to see that his scientists had been right. This was spectacular. There was something here…the octagonal key?

He picked it up out of the slot on the strange “alien” altar and nearly jumped out of his expensive suit when he saw two people in black leather trench coats looking at him.

“Officers?”

“He has the key,” the female said with surprise, “Kal-El?”

“I’m sorry,” Lex said taking a step back, “You are?”

The male had him by the throat and lifted him off the floor. His feet dangled and he choked out a groan as the man’s sharp nails dug into his skin. The female took the key from him in disgust.

“He bleeds,” she said in wonder, “Kal-El would not bleed.”

The male growled and hurled him across the room into another wall. Lex cried out and hit the ground only to see that two of them vanish in rapid blurs. What the hell?

Chloe opened her eyes and sat up in the cold snow looking around. The snow just seemed to go on forever all around her. Where the hell was she? That was when her blue eyes opened wide in wonder when they fell on a massive glowing palace of ice. Clark?

She got to her feet which were probably frost bitten by now, since she couldn’t seem to feel a thing. She put her hands in her pockets to try and keep them warm as she trudged through the deep snow towards the ice palace. It was freezing.

Her big blue eyes sparkled when she got inside. Everything was so bright and pretty. That was when she saw Clark standing in a beam of light looking like a zombie.

“Clark,” she called out just as a blast of freezing wind and snow assaulted her.

She fell to her knees crying out his name. It was so cold she felt as though her skin would crack at any moment. She could only whisper her name now as she fell on her side looking at him…pleading for him to save her.

Suddenly she felt strong arms around her, shielding her from the cold. He really was a superman.

“Stop,” he yelled, “Don’t hurt her!”

“One life,” Jor-El said, “Does not outweigh billions, my Son.”

“Please,” Clark begged, “She’s my friend.”

Jor-El was silent and the wind suddenly died down, “Very well,” he said knowing that if the female died, his son would turn from him forever and the Earth would be doomed, “But you must promise to return here, to me for your training before the yellow sun sets.”

“I will,” Clark said, “You have my word.”

“Do not fail me again, Kal-El,” Jor-El warned, “You’ve already seen what that can cost you.”

Clark looked down at her, “Chloe?”

“Hey,” she smiled up at him with blue lips and frost on her pale skin, “Time to get super, Clark.”

“What,” he asked in shock.

“I know,” she said even though her teeth were going to chatter right out of her head, “Take me along for the ride, Speedy?”

He just looked at her in surprise and fear until she whispered, “Go, Clark.”

They were gone in a blur.

Jor-El would have rolled his eyes if he still had eyes to roll, “Kai-El?”

“I am here,” the young blue-topaz eyed man answered as he floated down from a tall spire of ice where he had been watching the little scene play out in silence.

“See to it that Kal-El returns to me as he promised,” Jor-El said.

“As you wish,” Kai-El said with a humble bow, “Uncle.”
