Chapter One

“I asked you a question,” Ronan hissed like a pissed off cat as he rubbed his mouth for trying to bite off more than it could obviously chew.

Kal stood up straight and looked Ronan over before he answered. Ronan really didn’t like being analyzed and was about to leap at him when Kal asked, “Did you just try to bite my neck?”

“You mean you didn’t feel me try,” Ronan asked smiling wickedly at him as shadows gathered all around him.

Kal’s eyes glowed red and Ronan leaped to the side in one swift movement like a graceful dancer as fire beans shot passed him to strike and scorch a metal wall. Ronan stood up quickly and his hair swirled around like liquid darkness, “That was rude.”

“That was just a warning shot,” Kal told him as he ran a hand through his own hair, “So you don’t get the impression that I’m just some helpless meal for you meteor freak.”

Ronan blinked his hypnotic turquoise eyes, “A what?”

Kal was about to answer him when the shadows began to darken as if someone had turned off a switch. He looked around and looked to see that Ronan was looking very nervous now and was swaying on his feet.

“What are you doing,” Kal asked about to set him on fire.

“It’s not me,” he said looking around slightly panicked, “Shit.”

“What’s going on,” Kal asked really starting to get pissed that he was still not going to get lucky.

The both of them could hear a loud wailing and the sound of wings. Ronan swooned a little for the lack of feeding, “Damn it.”

He stumbled over to lean against a steal beam to keep from falling on his ass. It had been too long since he had drained the essence and blood from some helpless victim.

Kal looked at him with some concern, “Are you all right?”

Before Ronan could answer a chilling voice that sounded like a cold wind blowing through a cemetery in winter hissed, “At last Ronan Nightbane, I have found you for her Dark Majesty.”

Kal spun around to see the corpse looking creature step out of the darkness and he could see that its hair was long and stringy. Its hands were elongated claws with empty eyes that burned with a cold fire.

It stepped closer and its white silk shroud perpetually stained with blood billowed around its lithe frame, “Her Majesty will be most pleased to have you home.”

Ronan smiled trying to hide the fact that he was now seriously in trouble, “Wow, I see you’re still as ugly as ever Stell.”

She hissed and Kal noticed that her entire mouth was filled with needle sharp fangs. He really wanted to know what the fuck was going on. What the hell was his ugly hag? She looked like something out of someone’s worse nightmare.

Stell slowly turned and smiled at him with every fang bared, “You would be close.”

Ronan gathered his remaining strength and stood up, “Tell mommy to go fuck herself nice and hard.”

Stell hissed in rage, “You dare to mock Her Dark One?”

Ronan rolled his shiny eyes, “I dare lots of stuff you rotting sack of shit!”

Stell leaped through the air screaming like a hundred banshees for Kal to fire at her with his heat vision. Her billowing shroud caught flame and she screamed in anger and fled into the coming dawn cursing.

Ronan could feel the dawn slowly approaching and he fell to his knees from the lack of energy to stand anymore. He turned to look up at Kal with beseeching eyes whispering, “Help me?”

“Why should I help you,” Kal asked looking down at the beautiful creature, “When you tried to kill me tonight?”

He could feel the sun rising and there were windows all over the place for the rays to touch him. He was too weak to move and fell over on his side looking up at Kal in fear, “Please?”

Kal bit his bottom lip knowing he was so going to regret doing this. He sped over and grabbed the black tarp from a table and threw it over Ronan, and picked him up in his arms.

“Hold on,” Kal said and in a burst of speed the two of them were out of there.

Kal slammed the door to his apartment behind him and quickly placed Ronan in the closet. He then went about closing every blind in the apartment and putting thick towels and random blankets over them to block out the embracing rays.

He sped back over and opened the closet door to see that Ronan had not so much as even moved. Kal picked him back up and carried him into the bedroom laying him gently on the bed. He pulled the tarp off of him to see that Ronan’s eyes were closed. Slowly Ronan opened them and looked at Kal with some strange emotion in them, “Thank you.”

Kal nodded, “Just don’t pull any freaky shit.”

Ronan snorted to keep from trembling, “Ok Mr. I can shoot fire from my eyes.”

“That’s part of my biology,” Kal told him, “I was born this way.”

“So was I,” Ronan whispered as he tried to sit up and only managed to lift his neck. He groaned, “Damn it.”

“You sure are weak for someone of your bulk,” Kal said looking the tall man over, “Not to mention being a vampire and all.”

Ronan smiled weakly, “You try going without food for a few weeks and come back and tell me how you feel.”

“I’ll pass,” Kal told him as he sat down next to him at the foot of the bed, “So, you were born this way?”

Ronan nodded as he looked at the artery in Kal’s neck. He could hear the pounding of his strong inhuman heart beating in his ultra sensitive ears. He could hear the blood flowing like life giving nectar through his veins.

He felt his fangs slide down as instinct took over. Kal smelled so nice and was so close. His body needed blood and his eyes began to glow with a burning blue fire.

Suddenly he pounced on Kal hissing and snarling like a great cat seeing him as nothing but food. He had never lost control like this before. Kal was actually struggling to get him off of him. Ronan was just as physically strong as he was and that scared Kal. He punched Ronan in the face only for him to snap at Kal’s throat. He knew that if he had been human Ronan would have him scattered in pieces all across the bedroom by now.

Ronan suddenly let out a scream that sounded way more frightening than that ugly hag’s had been. He fell to the floor holding his head in his hands crying.

Kal was on his feet in an instant looking down at the sobbing, trembling young man in his floor. He was a vampire and he obviously needed blood right now or he would go crazy again. Kal suddenly got an idea and was gone in a flash and a few seconds later he came back in carrying bags of blood from the local blood bank.

He dropped them in front of Ronan so he could see them. He watched in sick fascination as Ronan bit into each one draining them dry. Ronan was suddenly on his feet with his skin glowing like snow sparkling under a silver moon.

Kal could smell the night blooming jasmine and it was intoxicating. Ronan opened his watery turquoise eyes and looked at him whispering, “I’m sorry.”

Kal nodded, “You should be,” he said pointing at his bed, “Just look at those sheets and do you know how hard it is to get blood out of carpet?”

Ronan turned to look at the shredded and tattered sheets to the blood stains on the floor from where he had fed. He didn’t really know what to say. Saying he was sorry just didn’t seem good enough after what Kal had done for him even though he had no obligation to do any of it at all. Kal had saved his life and sanity all in one morning.

“I’m sorry about your sheets and your carpet,” he said honestly, “I kind of lost it.”

“You really did,” Kal said, “For someone who was too weak to sit up you sure are a strong mother.”

Ronan nodded, “Instinct tends to take over rational thought. My body will do whatever it has to do in order to survive.”

Kal nodded even though that did not explain why he was unable to escape the sun earlier, but decided that could wait. He really needed to get some rest after going through all of this. He looked at Ronan with glowing red eyes, “Can I trust you not to bite my throat out while I try to get some sleep?”

Ronan nodded his head which made his garnet hair bounce, “I’m good, for now.”

Kal nodded and in a flash the bed had been changed and he was lying under the covers snoring softly. Ronan just stood there and realized that he needed to rest as well.

He silently glided out of the bedroom closing the door gently behind him. He was stuck here until the sun went down so he plopped down on the sofa and closed his eyes.

He knew that Kal would have a million questions when he woke up for him to answer. Did he really want to? He could just fly away once the sun went down. No questions, no nothing. He had some questions for Kal to. Like what was he? How was he able to move so fast and shoot fire from his eyes? How was he able to get him off of him? How come he could not bite through his skin? All these questions plagued his mind until his usual dreamless sleep took him under its dark wings.
