One

She sauntered down the sidewalk, swinging her arms with each stride. Her hips swaying. Old habits were hard to break.

She heard a car pull up behind her, no worries it was a main street with businesses on each side. The tires crunched on the pavement. A siren chirped a couple of times, catching her attention.

She turned towards the noise. A squad car had pulled to a stop beside her. The window rolled down almost in slow motion, the officer in the passenger seat his eyes shaded by sunglasses motioned her over.

She looked around at her surroundings. Nothing seemed out of the ordinary but yet she sensed something. She turned her eyes back to the squad car, noticing for the first time the occupants inside, 2 officers in front, a shadowed figure in back, She also noticed that it was unmarked. Which usually meant detectives, or Feds.

She turned towards them making as if she were heading over, adjusting her army green messenger bag. Just as she approached the car door, at the last second she turned on heel and took off.

"Stop Police!" Typical for cops.

Her bronze ballet flats clicked against the pavement as her legs pumped, bringing her further away from the officers. Having turned and headed back the direction she had come from saved her a few seconds. The officers would have to wrestle with their seatbelts and open the car doors before they could even think about climbing out and chasing her on foot. It would be to hard to turn the car around as quickly as she had turned and fled.

She made a last minute choice and turned left, around the corner. Instead of heading straight across. Her eyes had caught site of a marked squad a block ahead.

As she rounded the corner her eyes stayed glued to the squad in front of her, and she collided head on with a uniformed officer. She bounced off the heavier and larger man.

"Fuck!" She landed hard, square on her ass.

"Maim you'll have to come with me." The tall officer stood hand on the butt of his gun.

"Owww." She shook her hands, stinging from the crash against the concrete.

She glared up at the officer standing over her, as others came around the corner, guns drawn. "Why should I?"

"We have a warrant."

One of the original officers pulled her to her feet. She dusted her hands off, straightening her white button down shirt and smoothing her delicate hands over her camo colored mini skirt. He pulled her hands behind her, slapping on the handcuffs a little too roughly. She felt the clasp scrape her wrists.

"What for?" She tried to pull her hands away from the officer behind her, but he was stronger and had a good grip.

"For your arrest." The officer in front smiled.

Her 'captor" pulled her around by her elbow. As her eyes came around she caught the eyes of the backseat passenger in the first squad car.
Cold, steel blue eyes. She had never forgotten those eyes.
