SECRETS CHAPTER 2
The boys were in the barn doing their morning chores when Bo decided to try and find out what had been bothering Luke recently.
“Hey, Luke….”
“Yeah?”
“What’s been bothering you lately? You ain’t been sleeping very good….I heard ya get up last night.”
“Sorry….I didn’t mean to wake ya up.”
“Don’t worry about that….I’m just worried about you. You wanna talk about it?”
“No….it’s my problem…I’ll have work it for myself.” Luke said evasively. There was no way he could Bo what was troubling him.
“I wanna help.”
“You can’t….so just let it go, okay?”
“Come on, Luke….you used to tell me everything…..”
“I said let it go.” Luke said in an irritated voice, his tone warning Bo to back off. “I’ll handle it by myself.”
“You don’t have to be so cranky about it.” Bo said in a hurt voice and a pout. He wasn’t used to Luke raising his voice to him or being so irritated with him. That wasn’t the Luke he remembered. He found himself wondering if the Luke he remembered still existed at all or had this stranger came home from Viet Nam in his place.
Luke took a deep breath and exhaled slowly. He knew that he had hurt Bo’s feelings and he hadn’t meant to. Looking at his cousin, he said gently “I’m sorry, Bo. I didn’t mean to snap at you. I just got some things on my mind that I need to figure out for myself…”
“Okay….” Bo said with a grin. He could never stay mad for long at anyone, especially Luke. Luke was more like his big brother then his older cousin. When he was little, Luke was his hero and in a lot of ways, he still was. He had always wanted to be just like Luke. And he still did. In his eyes, Luke could no wrong. “But I’m here if ya wanna talk about it.”
“Thanks, cuz. I appreciate that.” Luke said even though he knew his problem wasn’t one he could talk about, not with Bo anyway since Bo was part of the problem. Hell, Bo was the problem.
“Hey, how about we go swimming after we get done with our chores?” Bo suggested innocently
“No, not today.” Luke said, a little too quickly. The truth was he knew he’d really be in trouble if he went swimming with Bo because they had always gone skinny dipping. And he knew that seeing Bo naked while they were swimming would only cause more problems. And he definitely did not want to get aroused watching Bo swim. That would be embarrassing to say the least.
“Okay.” Bo said with a puzzled frown. Usually Luke liked to go swimming, especially when it was as hot out as it was already. Something was definitely wrong. Bo just had to figure out a way to get to the bottom of it and to get Luke to talk about it.
But he knew not to push too hard or Luke would just get more stubborn about telling him what was wrong. That was just the way Luke was. He wouldn’t tell Bo what was wrong until he was good and ready but Bo was confident that eventually he would find out what the problem was.
