Chapter 1

Bi zui-shut up
bao bei-sweetheart
pigu-butt

“What do you mean my sister is going out with you on your next job?” Simon yelled as he jumped out of his seat, his face turning a deep red. “Are you crazy? She could get hurt, or killed!” Kaylee tried to pull Simon back into his seat, but he ignored her.

Mal had figured this was a bad idea, well it was either this or sneak River out on jobs. Everyone but Inara was seated around the table, she was in her shuttle scheduling clients for when they landed.

“Since the Alliance no longer deems you two a threat-”

“That's besides the point and you know it. I'm her brother. You can't make this kind of decision without talking to me. And furthermore, she's still just a child.” Simon interrupted, still yelling.

River, who had been sitting there quietly throughout this shouting match, jumped out of her seat screaming. “Bi zui! She is no longer a child. She turned 18 two months ago, and she's old enough to make her own decisions. She would like to be of help after Wash returns to flying Serenity.”

Everyone at the table was taken aback, mostly because they’d never heard River talk that way before. They were all ashamed that they didn't know River had turned 18, but no one more so then Simon, who should have remembered his mei mei's birthday. “River, why didn't you say anything about your birthday?”

“It wasn't relevant,” River answered. She looked at the crew and wondered why they all looked so sad, especially Kaylee. “I want to be a back-up gun.”

“But mei mei,” Simon whined. “What if this sets you back in your recovery?” Nobody noticed that the girl had referred to herself in the first person.

River looked up at Simon with a smirk on her face. “She took out a reaver army, Simon. She took out everyone at that bar and that didn't set her back. She is what she is, and that 14 year old girl isn't coming back. You've got to accept that, and accept that she is not a child anymore.” With that, River got up and left the mess, leaving everyone to think on what she’d just told them.

“She's right ya know,” Wash spoke up breaking the silence. “We gotta stop treating her like a child, and plus did ya notice something?”

“What husband?” Zoe questioned.

Wash looked at everyone, surprised that they hadn’t picked it up too. “The part where she said ‘I want to be a back-up gun.’ I don’t ever remember River referring to herself in the first person before, only the third person with the ‘she and her’ stuff.”

No one could believe it, especially Simon. He usually paid attention to whatever River said, although he never understood it. “Wash is right. I've never heard River say ‘I’ before and I pay attention to any change she may make. I can't believe I didn't hear that.” Simon replied, looking a little depressed.

Kaylee put her arm around Simon's shoulders. “Bao bei. Ain't your fault, ya was more concerned about what your sister wants to do and to tell ya the truth, so am I.” She gave a quick glance over to Mal. “But I think it's shiny that she wants to help out around the ship, cuz she does need to find her place out here in the black.”

“Kaylee's right Simon,” Mal told him. “River needs to find her place here, and I understand you've got concerns. So do I. That's why I ain't making any decisions yet.”

Simon gave a little snort that received a small slap on the back of his head from Kaylee. Mal chuckled at seeing the slap. “She'll come out with us on the next low risk job, and if I think she works out, I'll hire her as a back-up gun. But understand this, Doc, this is a decision I'll make, dong ma?” Mal finishes with a glare directed at Simon.

Jayne snorts. “Low risk job? I don't ‘member a low risk job I ain't been shot at, stabbed or even punched at.”

Mal brought his glare to Jayne before replying, “Ain't helping, Jayne. I will decide which jobs are too dangerous for this crew or not. If it ain't for me or Zoe or you, it ain't too dangerous for River. And point of fact, River has been told that the no touchin guns rule still applies till I say.”

“Well that's a comfort,” Jayne huffed out. “I don't need her pointing weapons in my direction with an itchy trigger finger.”

“Are you afraid of River, Jayne,” Mal patronized. He was gonna say little girl but remembered what River said earlier, that she's not a little girl anymore.

Jayne looked around the table and saw them all giggling. “I reckon ya don't ‘member the butcher’s knife,” he said tryin’ to defend himself. No one had stopped giggling. Jayne growled low in his throat before standing up. “I'll be in my bunk,” he grunted out before leaving the mess.

He saw River re-enter after he left. He knew she’d just stayed outside the door listening to their conversation, but that didn't bother him none. What did bother him was her wantin’ to go out on jobs with them. And that bothered him more, just havin’ any sort of feelin’ towards River, he thought while dropping into his bunk.

Something had changed the moment those doors opened to show River, a knife in one hand, an axe in the other, and an army of dead reavers around her feet. It turned him on that a delicate little core girl like her could kick some serious pigu. But then again, she wasn't just a girl she was a weapon. Jayne knew he should get rid of this feeling quick or he might get spaced by the Cap'n. Maybe on the next job, he'd go get him some trim.
